  • From wikipedia.org:
Seongsan Ilchulbong, also called ‘Sunrise Peak’, is an archetypal tuff cone formed by hydrovolcanic eruptions upon a shallow seabed about 5 thousand years ago. Situated on the eastern seaboard of Jeju Island, south Korea and said to resemble a gigantic ancient castle, this tuff cone is 182 meters high, has a preserved bowl-like crater and also displays diverse inner structures resulting from the sea cliff.
Because of these scientific values and remarkable scenery, Seongsan Ilchulbong Tuff Cone was designated as a Natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO as part of Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes and it is worth preserving permanently as a natural heritage of humankind.
At the food of Seongsan Ilchulbong, on the beach, the famous Haenyeo women divers of Jeju dive and perform. Some of these women are in their 80s, and dive 10m under the sea to gather shellfish, such as abalone or sea urchins for a living without the help of oxygen masks. The women themselves are on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
