Is the cost of food in china cheap in general or is it just certain places your visiting? What you bought in the video would of been like $20-25 where I live.
They have a large local market, so diversity and prices are always competitive, so they are low, to attract customers.

For the uneducated Chinese in the village. They might assume that you're just a dirty man until they realise that the dirt won't scrub off. That's how some may think. Also, there are vast differences between the Chinese in the south compared with the Chinese in the north. Almost a different kind of Chinese. I had my crash course Chinese experience. I learnt Chinese by myself doing exactly what you're doing. Just trying to talk to people and copy what they say. The important part is listening to how they speak. Basically you just copy what someone said and repeat it to somebody else for a response. In the province it's a dialect. If you go to another province far away the words you speak may not be recognised. Look at the menu on the sign. It's just Chinese words and a price. How are foreign people supposed to know what anything is? Once I pointed to 2 things on a menus and got plain rice with plain noodles. Then I decided it would be best to say "我要这个“ And point to what someone else was eating.
