      Hey Scotty! Your videos are a huge help to me. I Hyundai accent with a P455 I found that my charcoal canister purge valve in the back is failing intermittently. I ordered a replacement but it only has an inlet and slap filter with no outlet to connect to my charcoal canister. If I bypass my charcoal canister, what might that do? Would that be a problem? I think the fuel filler neck is a common problem with the evap codes also. These tubes from the gas cap to the gas tank often develop rust and leak. Changed my solenoids for cheap and finally found the leak in my fuel filler neck.

  • @buzoff4642
    @buzoff4642 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Small or large EVAP leak needs a flow chart for checking.
    - gas cap, is it tight? if not tighten it
    - is there rust on the filler neck where the gas cap is supposed to snug? If yes, clean it up with emery cloth.
    - try replacing the gas cap.
    - etc.

      If my vehicle code is reading P0455 and says large evap leak, and now when I push of the accelerator it's moves about 5 mph so I have to shut it off and wait a few mins, then turn it back on for full power. .. did u have this symptom from the gas cap ? Thanks

    • @buzoff4642
      @buzoff4642 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cmccorkle4377 No, it didn't. But gas cap is the easiest/cheapest to try. This sounds like such a large leak, gas isn't making it to the carburetor. Mine drove me nuts, turned out to be cracked fuel pump. Buried in the trunk under mat/spare tire, apparently none of the SOBs working on the car, over 3 years, didn't bother to check that.

    Now I just hade a 455 code on her car , 2005 XG350 Sport Hyundai, I looked and I was able to remove the canister. BUT ! 2 things , !- valve was open when I blew through it, I'm guessing it should be closed, 2 One of hoes lines rusted right off, the pipe that fed the cannister is gone, . Question , Can i find, and fish a hose up to where it's coming from?. Left side (drivers) seems to go through wheel well and trunk. The rest of the hoses which look like the ones from gas tank filler nozzle, look ok. Thanks for your help. Elliot

    Thanks again, Scotty! I shall try these tricks with my 2003 Jeep Gr. Cherokee. I'm tired of seeing that Check Engine light and besides which, it needs to pass NJ emissions test next month. I better get cracking on replacing the usual suspects. Also - you might want to mention to other folks that split or defective air line hoses can cause this P0455 code to rear its ugly head. Those are fairly cheap fixes, too.

    I kept getting a large evap leak code p0455 on my 05 Ram . I replaced the gas cap the purge valve and leak detection pump before I made an interesting discovery. The check engine light only comes on when the gas gets below half a tank. I don't think I have a leak at all just a code when the tank pressure is low. So I just keep the tank above half a tank. So far it's working. Lol Dodges.

      And people wonder why import cars have a strong hold here in the US. Ford decided that on a good idea with their explorers between 2008-2012 that if the clock spring or anything small goes bad or broken in the steering column to make it all part of the steering column so you have to pay $800 for a whole new steering column. Makes you wonder why every other car out there is a hyundai, honda, or toyota.

    • @97markviii
      @97markviii 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's what junk yards are for, cheap and recyclable parts. Ford isn't in the business of making money on parts. After 10yrs most non critical parts are discontinued. That's where the aftermarket takes over if there is a high enough demand for it.

    Going to need to read up on this for my car... Been getting a couple of these EVAP codes over the last few years... Swapping caps seemed to help but not any more... Suppose if it's an easy fix, probably going to cost less then having someone test the system, find a dozen other potential problems, or waste time looking for other bad seals or cracks.

    • @lgoamity
      @lgoamity 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      FINALLY(!) decided after all these months (years) to try replacing the Valve last night. It was so simple (even simpler then I expected, as some people with my model car need to unbolt/move the EVAP Canister slightly to remove/replace the valve.) I should have done it long ago. (Or last year even when I replaced my Fuel Filter and spent a lot of time in the same area under the Car) Now it's just a waiting game to see if the code(s) come back. Was able to "test" the Valve to see if it has "failed". Applying 12 volts to it shows it will open/close "properly"(?)... But now at almost 20 years old... as suggested in the Video it might have degraded some and not be seating/sealing correctly or some other fault(s)...

    hey Scotty, thanks for making these videos! I have a 2006 kia optima ex v6 that had a P0451 evap emmisions CEL...I changed the gas cap gasket, cleared the code and it came back. I also noticed my power steering fluid was low, so I topped it off and the P0451 CEL went away without me doing ANYTHING else...I find it hard to believe the two are related but I did recently read an article that said a power steering problem or leak could be a symptom of the P0451 CEL????

    hey Scotty, I had a p0455 before the summer in my Jeep and I replaced the vent valve. The code and smell of gas was gone for the entire summer and now they're both back. Do you think my new valve went bad so soon? Would you replace again?

    Scotty I had a question for you. If I just changed my purge valve solenoid it seems it made my truck run much better but now I am having a really bad ( sulfur smell) egg & it started right after I challenged the purge valve solenoid? Thanks for any information my friend.

    Hey Scotty! I have a 2007 lexus is350 and I got the codes P0441 and P0455. I have already tried the gas cap as well as the purge solenoid. What else can it be? Do you have any idea what the combination of those two codes indicate? thank you

    Hi Scotty. I have a 2007 F-150 5.4L. I have steering that goes in and out like it's running out of fluid, but it had a leak, got it fixed and it's full all time. My Battery is kinda weak, so I was thinking (hoping) that low battery might be the cause. Feels like driving rack and pinion half the time. Thanks!

      often a bad pump, running em low on fluid can break them down over time, even if it's full now

    hi Scotty, I have a 2001 Chrysler Voyager Van. the mechanic fixed the problem but my check engine light came back a year later. it was a code of 0455 evap leak. but I also discovered that I had a bad evap core that needs to be replaced, is the bad evap core related to the evap leak? thanks Scottie

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      no, different systems, evap system is for gas vapors from the gas tank, evaporator core is the AC system

    I love your you tube videos. I just bought a 2012 Nissan Versa Hatchback 1.8 s, and I hard a hard time starting it except just passed smog, so I was told by a mechanic that probably bad fuel pump except $330.00 plus installations $175.00, so I bought a new fuel pump from auto parts warehouse for $75.00-$110.00 and installed it except was on empty when changed fuel pump after installation read half a tank, so I am scared to fill up the tank and break the fuel gauge, so I took off gas cap prior to installation, and I cycled the key to build PSI before starting it starts right up and runs and drives fine, and I got a code to install fuel cap, so I erased on dash, and I bought a new one except today the check engine light went on P0455, so I am curious of maybe still gas cap, or I need to change the part in the video please thank you. I still get the problem the key turned to start and nothing happens before hard crank no start normally starts just again hard cranking except a very little after fuel pump changed. I am curious what to do.

    Hey Scotty. On my 03 Civic with 85k miles. I have a p1457 evap leak code. So far I replaced the gas cap and canister purge valve but the light came back. Do you think it's the canister shut off valve or the charcoal canister it's self ?

  • @greygoosemafia
    @greygoosemafia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can test them with a handheld vacuum pump and multi-meter. Should be holding vacuum while not energized then once you introduce 12v its releases the pressure. if it doesn't hold pressure... then Its bad or doesn't actuate the solenoid, It's bad

    I'm getting a blinking Monitor icon, "EV", yellow LED indicator light, No DTC's presently stored in code reader's memory. Also, NO Engine light is presently showing on dashboard. I'm not a 100-mile guy at age 75, so it takes me a while to travel around town (don't travel) until a cycle is reached. It's been since May when a part was changed, and codes cleared.

    I had an evap leak, turned out to be a broken line behind the canister. I glued it back in place, and cleared the code. Code never came back. But I would like to replace that line.. do I cut the old one, and use a heat gun? Or are the lines connected with glue? I found a new quick connector. But how do I go about this?

    Scotty.. I bought a new car @ end of July. I've maybe had it a month all with the same issue is been back 3 times this lady time was this pass week. This dealership replaced alot of stuff. Free to me bc it's been going on since i bought the car so they have to by contact but my questions is/are with a evap leaks 1. How did it pass a 5 point emissions check? 2. Can a evap cause over heating issues? The radiator while idling can reach 208 so far. I try not to let it ... I've only had it less the 24 hrs since they've had it for 7 days. Taking it back again. Codes are po442 po455 , 455.. 2009 Chevy HHR
    Any suggestions?

    2006 Lexus gs 300 changed the purge valve assembly but when the engine is hot I removed the line that goes to the charcoal canister and there is no feeling of vacuum at the valve inlet. Not sure if that is normal or not. Trouble finding a gas cap that seems to fit. Might have to go to the dealer...ugh!!

    had something similar, but i had the gas filler neck chipped from the rim.
    just bought the part for 60 bucks new. got myself a a wrench, screwdrivers and a ratchet. removed the old part and installed the new one, due to being a noob mechanic took me about 2 hours to replace it drove the car for 10 minutes stop and checked for leaks. drove for another 30 minutes and the light went off, the smell stood there for the rest of the day but next day the gas smell was completly gone and my mpg increased by 30-50 miles per tank it already paid itself with a matter for months spent maybe 75 with taxes for everything had to buy 2 hose clamps and new screws to hold the gas neck my old ones rusted out.

    I had a Evap leak code. I looked under the car and found that the line coming from the tank to the canister was broken. I glued it back in place, and the code went away. But the problem of a rough idle after fueling up still exists. Is it the purge valve, the glued piece, or the system is dirty? No code yet after many miles.
