  • A rifle is only as good as the man who carries it. As a follow up to last week's video on rethinking the scout rifle, today I'm taking a look at a few of the key skills necessary to become a well-rounded rifle shooter.

    A long time ago I had modified my Remington 700BDL 6mm rifle bolt and the open iron sights. I demonstrated I could rapid fire at a 50 yard target with a 1 silver dollar size bulls eye. I never used a scope all open iron sights. I sent off 3 rounds in under 2.5 seconds and knew I hit the target consistent in the center and waited for the spotter. He shouted there was three in the dollar but no one cared since everyone was into scopes and semi autos.

    Chris, one more time BZ!
    I do like how clear you explain and recommend. I'm agree with you that rifle "bolt action" sometimes is more/better "social" accepted than semiautomatics... Good weapon, difficult to master. Thank you again for your time and dedication. Good videos to create good atmosphere for shooting activities in general and self-defense in particular, helping to create a knowledgeable opinion. Take care and stay safe.

    This is good.. I have read Jeff Coopers book it's good.. I still own and use bolt action rifles and have used them all my life and it's an action i like over semi autos by a long way.. I do a lot of my practice with a .22 bolt rifle of high quality , a person will pick up speed as you learn to work with the rifle .. I also have used for a number of years now , a single shot Ruger in a center fire chambering , if a person is willing to take the time to work with it , you will find it a lot faster than folks think..

    The last deer I took was inside 20 yards while it was running with a Ruger American .30-06 with a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40. I had my rifle slung over my shoulder and had my phone in my hand had to put my phone in my pocket shoulder rifle, fire and chamber another round as it's second nature and that was all in about 2.5- 3 seconds. Dropped the axis buck with 1 shot. I've never had any "training" from instructors just years of hunting and running into all kinds of different shooting situations.

      A basic gaming PC rig: $500 ($250 if buying used)
      High-speed internet: $70 a month.
      Computer Games: $60 per game. It's actually around $100 after you get DLC. No free-to-play aren't actually free unless you like zero progress and constant defeat.
      So one game, for one month, on one PC will set you back $380 to $670. The games on your PC can easily surpass the cost of the PC so these are conservative numbers. For around $500 you can buy an SKS or even a bargain basement AR and have some money left over for ammo. If you want a bolt gun you can do it even cheaper.
      Pretty much any hobby will cost quit a lot of money. If a hobby seems cheap that's only because the relatively low entry costs makes it seem cheap.

    • @danmorgan3685
      @danmorgan3685 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Aaron This was actually in reference to Solado. As for the example it was just one example about how expensive hobbies can be. Hope you are following treatment guidelines for the PTSD. Health maintenance is the only way to go with that.

      @Aaron Meds give you a floor and that's not nothing. If what you say is literally true (i.e. pills and *nothing* else) that's bad practice in the extreme. Meds work in conjunction with ongoing therapy and medical monitoring. A medication combination will work for certain people for a certain period of time and not for others.
      Basically, if your stable now and not putting a fist through a monitor then you're doing something right. The moment that changes is the moment you need a new plan.

Missed a lot of shots, initially. Got to where, within 25 yds, avg. might have become 50% hits. Plinking does improve aim, as long as it's done safely. Silly accidents are, um, outputting? Pro archer here, the bow doesn’t matter as much as the person. I use a Matthews for hunting, i know i won’t miss but i still only shoot up to 40 yards because of power. The arrows also have to be very aerodynamic, as long as your good with a bow stick to that bow unless there is one that is better for you. THats my advise and this also fits with rifles. I great with my Mosin, I know a Gewehr 98 is better but I don’t have one so I will become proficient with what I have. Also Mongols>>>>> Indians

    Winchester lever actions are what won the West. They can be accurately cycled pretty quickly and with the side gate it can be kept topped off in a fight. A scout rifle setup of a lever .30-30 with a 1x4 long eye relief scout scope would be pretty wicked deadly.

    • @TommyboyGTP
      @TommyboyGTP 8 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Not all lever guns have tube magazines. Savage 99 is one of them, and Henry has one that uses a box magazine and shoots .308

    • @dtroy15
      @dtroy15 8 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Jefe von Q ... that's when they used the round nose which I said. Ever notice that lever action rifles are traditionally in calibers with very blunt, round tips like 30-30? Ever notice that very few lever action rifles (Henry long ranger, browning BLR) are chambered in true spitzer calibers like .223? If you line up a bunch of very pointy bullets in a tube perfectly in line to each hit the primer of the round in front of it, it doesn't go well when dropped. That's the weakness of a tube magazine in a center-fire rifle.

Nothing worse than a bolt that binds as soon as it has to do some hard work.

      I honestly do not have a ton of experience with all the available options. I really like the Tikka T3x and I think they're pretty affordable. If I needed a real budget bolt gun, I'd look at the Ruger American series.

      Consider the Howa 1500 and Mossberg Patriot series. Same price range, in a robust conventional action. Safer (better gas handling) than American or T3x.

    Great info! I love semiautos, but there's something special to be learned and experience with a nice Mauser K98.
    If you're reading this and searching for a nice sling, I'd recommend a Vickers Tactical sling. They are very easy to adjust to comfy carrying, and easily shoulder the rifle, tighten the sling and assume a brace technique with the sling.
    Also, if anyone knows a good place to get one's paws on a K98, I'm interested. I'd love a good bolt gun

      Mr.Medic I'd recommend .30-30 first, since it's cheaper to get into and shoots flatter. Pick up the .45-70 as well at a later date; both cartridges have their role.

    • @rainmechanic

      I know this was asked a year ago but here goes... Get the .30-30.. The XS Picatinny rail mount for the Marlin 336 has a built in ghost ring and offers the ability to mount any optic you desire. Hornady's 150gr .30-.30 LeverEvolution ammunition is more powerful than 7.62 x 39 yet shares an almost identical trajectory out to 350 yards. That rifle and ammo paired with a Primary Arms 3X Prism scope in with the 7.62 X 39 ACSS ballistic drop reticle will allow you to connect with 18" steel plates out to 400 yards with boring regularity. You would be surprised how effective this setup can be in the real world. Another option is the new Ruger American Bolt gun in 762x39 with 16in barrel and six pound weight.

    I can do 10 shots in 6 seconds, from a bench position.. yes the action is THAT fast. So fast the Germans thought it was a semi-auto in ww2.

    I'm not a bolt gun guy. My practical rifle is a 20 inch AR15. Its basically a scoped M16A4 clone. I can make hits on demand out to 600 yards after sprinting 150 yards. I can even do it off the left or the right shoulder. I learned the basics at Stone Bay and Paris Island. If I must defend home and hearth with a rifle, give me a light weight semi auto every time.

      Wont disagree. However I think given the geopolitical tensions surrounding the Armalite family of Rifles, having a “ban friendly” firearm that you are proficient with isn’t a bad idea. Though on the other hand if they ban all guns or ban the employment of weapons for ones defense like some European nations have done, that’s a moot point. Regardless of platform, if one intends to own it he should know how to use it to his best ability.

    I've done a LOT of fast, bolt-action shooting. For me it didn't take a lot of practice to get very fast (with my now nearly 40 year old Steyr SSG). One thing I NEVER hear ANYONE talk about, which I've used to truly AWESOME effect, is a set trigger. Set to the lightest setting, firing requires just a slight "touch" of the trigger. You can use this to get amazing accuracy offhand, by simply touching the trigger when the crosshairs are exactly where you want them to be -- even as your hold wobbles. I don't even see set triggers available as an option much these days -- but, as I said, it's hard to believe how effective they can be when you try to learn to use them.

    good delivery of the line "just don't take it with you to go get coffee .... " Used to be good with a rifle, now have astigmatism. I've always thought of guns as all being single shots, but I'm still a non-conformist who thinks I need to hit the 10 ring 9 out of ten.
    Bulls eye targets with a .22 rifle with a good trigger, and a good father, (thanks Dad!) is the best way to learn to shoot. Because you learn to "call" where each shot goes.
    I would put a weight on the accessory rail of a small pistol to cut recoil, for training. Would also begin shooting from a rest.
    If there was some way to erase all recall of video games from one's memory, all movies and TV shows, people would get more out of practice, and would in general, make better decisions.
    Good Luck
