Aaawwww he's great, love him, we had tortoise when I was little, his name was Fred. My brother rescued him, someone had drilled a hole into his shell and tied him hanging upside down from a tree. He sure as heck loved his food, and besides his salad he would go mad for bananas. Ge would let you feed him by hand and when he wanted food he would climb the step when outside in hot weather and knock the door by bonking his beak on the door and stratching at the door with his paws like a dog. In winter we would put into hibernation when he started to try and bury himself and then in spring he would let us know he was awake by stratching on the box and chucking all the paper we had padded him up with. You would just hear this rustling coming from the corner of the kitchen. He was very very old the vet said and on top of that we had him and gave him a very happy life for roughly 12 years, before he passed away. He's buried in his favourite place under his favourite Bush in me mums garden. This was back when summers in the uk were hot from start to finish in the late 70s and 80s. So I will love watching video about your tortoise @Richard x

If you can get a reflector on the UV tube you may achieve a better output from it. Horsefields love to dig, helps them to regulate humidity. Great video, love your enthusiasm

How deep shell I make a dig area for him?

    • @stephenparry172
      @stephenparry172 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@NORTHERNEXOTICS As deep as you can really, if he was out doors he would dig down right below ground. They are great at vanishing in outdoor enclosures because if this. If he can get down as deep as his shell that would be a good start

We had hermann's tortoises growing up, they still live with my mum and dad about 15 years old now. At some point in my life when I have a bigger living accommodations i definitely want one myself. Also life hacks: don't have bare feet they'll bite them and if they can see through it they'll ram it. Also males have scoots on the front of the shell they will use to ram eachother in mating season and it can really mess them up if one gets caught something to keep eye out for it can tur the skin from the shell. Best of luck mate great animals as always

    Provide a deep substrate.
Mix of coir and top soil if you can.
Damp it down every other day and watch them dig.
I see you have the calcium and cuttle fish there too. If you can, occasionally every so often dust with nutrobal if you have any.
Also, that dish you had with the water, put it in the enclosure so he can walk into it. Occasionally see my two sat there in water.
Another top tip - spray the food with water, then sprinkle with calcium powder - it gives them a small amount of hydration as well as the calcium powder on the food.
There’s also a book by Linda king about the weeds and plants that hermanns and horsefields can eat, I’m not sure if spring greens is the way to go, just a bit of a head up.
If you can find bristly ox tongue, narrow and broad leaf plantain, mallow, dandelion, nettles, brambles, thistle leaves - you’ll be providing them more with what they need internally. Don’t feel overwhelmed, these things grow anywhere and everywhere.
If your stuck, crispy florette salad packs or lambs lettuce and rocket are good options, but if you can, have a walk about and see what weeds you can find. There’s an app called “the tortoise table” for your phone that will provide a huge list of what you can, can feed sparingly and cannot feed tortoises.

I remember when you had less than a thousand subs!!! I am sooooo proud and motivated by you and your channel! This is great! I love how you explain EVERYTHING!! Its quite rare on this end of youtube. Mostly its just showing the animal and an enclosure thats already set up...it's so awesome that you break down every aspect of the whole ordeal...oh yeah and much thanks for...
    Your videos on:
Showing me how to set up a SUCCESSFUL/ THRIVING dubia roach colony!!!
Showing me what to do with screaming baby leopard gecko (when I first got him)
SOLARMETER!!! and how to use it lol
    Substrate
Trust building with my Savannah Monitor (Mushu)
Enrichment! Yes My ball pythons were extremely interested in the toilet paper roll....bad idea for a baby tegu as she tried to eat it! lol
Well...thats just to name a few keep up the GREAT WORK!!!!

The flicker is your camera, if the light is in 50hz, set your camera to 25fps recording to reduce flicker
