Cheap shinai leather is terrible, and why.

  • I've made the mistake of buying cheap leather tsuka handles that come with my practice shinai for a decade. Buying high quality, densely packed leather shinai handles is so much better.
    Here's a rant on why.
I'm still all for the cheaper shinai bamboo parts that you can buy at places like ebogu, but their cheap leather doesn't compare to the top quality leather, I think.

Good bamboo, terrible leather (most of the time): www.e-bogu.com...
Just the bamboo parts (the option I always buy to replace broken bamboo staves): www.e-bogu.com...

Recently, even some of the more expensive (39) ebogu shinai have tsukagawa that are twisting on me. I don't recall that happening years ago.

Try damping the leather and twisting it back into place. It will shrink slightly making it tighter on the shinai and help it hold it's shape and place. let me know how that works for you.

Get a nice one, and soak it in olive oil for 2 days, then let it dry 3 days with leather on.
