I bought an American made velomobile called an ELF. It was fun, but expensive and the parent company, Organic Transport went out of business. The ELF velomobile tadpole was about the size of a Mini Cooper, with a solar panel, colored neon mango. I paid $6K. The ELF had lots of mechanical and electrical problems but when you have cutting-edge technology there are bound to be problems.

Yep. Do this one all the time. Only once was bike stolen, My Dads first MTB, back in 1984. But still do it all the time. At grocery store, I make a habit of chatting up security guard, then leave my bike in their charge.

Not even locks work, i remember a friend of mine who went to the convenience store, locked up his dogma outside. His lock was cut with bolt cutters.
They found it 3 days later being sold on Facebook though.

In the age of the cordless angle grinder, there is NO lock sufficient. I've been saying for years now, the only way to guarantee your bike is stolen, is to lock it up. This is a true statement. I only shop, dine, drink at establishments that allow me to bring my bike in.

Most expensive cycling mistake: Taking it too seriously too fast and burning myself out, I was so done with it that I almost sold my bike. I still dont ride much (mostly on the trainer), I mainly run now, but I'm trying to get back to the point where I ride for the enjoyment of riding. I do wish I could go back to how much I loved it like 10 years ago.

Most expensive cycling mistake... Overtaking a car on a mountain descent. The very next section caught me out. Rear wheel stepped out, went over the bars at 40mph. Bike went catapulting down a ravine and was a total loss. 26 mile ambulance ride, two hospital stays and a surgery. All in all, should have just let the car lead me down the pass.

I came from being a pro skateboarder to living on the streets suffering from heroin addiction (and other drugs, REALLY down and out) to cleaning up and finding cycling, then becoming a Cat1/2 road racer on an elite team, and a gravel cyclist with bike frame and saddle sponsors. Cycling has DEFINiTLEY changed my life! (I think genetics were on my side as well as my cousin was a world tour pro and my sister was an olympic runner). Now I just need to become national champ so I can make a doc of my life haha!

    Obviously getting into cycling :P
I'm 21 years old and spent all my hard earned money (I worked for 3 whole years) on my precious bikes, which might be worth more than a car... I refused to move out of my parents house to safe money for my bikes :P But I don't regret it. I love riding my bike(s) every single day. Roadcycling in summer, mountainbiking and turbotrainer in winter.

Most expensive mistake. I stopped at my parents house mid-ride to refill the bottles. I leaned my bike against the garage door. Someone opened the garage door from inside the house. It picked my bike up about 6 feet in the air and dropped it drive side down. Could have been worse. I had to replace the rear derailleur (R7000 105), rear mech hanger, rear thru axle, and the $50.00 bar tape that I had JUST re-done the day before was scuffed and ruined. All things considered I got lucky.
Also the someone that opened the garage door from inside the house was me.

My most expensive cycling mistake was starting a bike renovation shop with a friend, who turned out to to be lacking any financial and logical skills. One day he decided to invest all our money in the same spec bike parts. As we were renovating old bikes and we came across many standards, we ended up without the money needed to finish the bikes we had taken from our existing clients. It's a shame as it was great timing to start a bike company and also I lost a good friend in the process. Now I work in IT.

Most expensive mistake: part one - on an all out sprint effort my rear derailleur pulled out and went into my rear wheel and I went down. It destroyed my wheel, rear derailleur, bent my chain, tore my bibs, Jersey, glove, cracked my helmet, bent my seat post, ripped my saddle and severely scratched my glasses. Not to mention the road rash.
Part two - now my derailleur hanger was part of the frame (no dropouts) which was aluminum. It stripped the treads on the frame which I couldn’t afford to replace so a mechanic at a local shop said he could fix it. My mistake was to believe him. About a month after “fixing it” I was doing another sprint and the rear derailleur came out again on the same stretch of road and the result was nearly identical to the first crash.
So, not only was I out all the same things from the first crash I had just replaced, I had to bite the bullet and buy a new frame anyway. Oh yeah, road rash on freshly healed rash is not good.
Lesson learned the hard way, when it comes to the components near your wheels, don’t try anything bodge worthy.

Borrowed my dad's company car to go riding as mine was in the garage. Put my bike on the roof and drove there with no issues until I got to the car park. No I didn't hit the bike on a height restriction, I wedged the car between the width restriction! My car at the time was a Citroen AX which was nearly 2ft narrower than the BMW 7 Series I was in. The damage wrote the car off, it was 7 weeks old and worth well over £50k. Both front wheels were pushed back a good 3 feet into the front doors and the roof had a crease in it from the force of the landing after the car reared up a good 6 feet according to my mate who was waiting. I may have got used to going into that car park at 30mph in my car a bit too easily. The BMW was only 3 inches too wide so my aim was straight and true to get both wheels equally, something my dad was actually quite impressed by. The granite rocks used to restrict the car park width had very little marks on them, just a bit of metallic blue paint that was still on there for months afterwards.

A few notes on this one.
I was finishing up a trainer session on a cold day just as Hack/Bodge started. I thought "Gosh, we haven't seen a good chain keeper in a while". GCN didn't disappoint! LOL!
Regarding hack/bodge how do you award "hack" to a cardboard box with duct tape? It was a good idea but not a lot different than cutting up a pair of crocs.
Finally, I'd be happy to follow you guys on the app but can see no way to actually search posts by user or search for users. Maybe a quick video would help boost numbers!
Until spring see you in Watopia!

I cannot imagine a bike ride getting boring. Tiring? Yes. Borderline exhausting? Absolutely, But nothing about riding a bike is boring. You can always change direction, take a new turn and discover a route you've never taken before, look for a nice view or a new coffee stop. Meet new people. Stop by a different bike shop and see what they have. Even after riding the same routes repeatedly there is always the wind in your face and something new to see, or a new personal challenge to take on. I can never get enough of it.

Guilty of driving into parking garage with expensive bike on roof 3 times over a 20 year period. The last time sheared new carbon forks in half like a cutting torch. When at the bike shop ordering a new fork, they said not to worry, someone comes in the shop four or five times a week with the same problem. Since then, have never put a bike on the roof of a car. Roof racks should be for team cars only IMO. Once I switched to a hitch receiver type carrier, I noticed that most of my experienced cycling mates weren't using roof racks. Lessons written in times of financial agony :D

Had four bikes on the rook of a BMW 5 series many years ago and an impromptu stop at a car park I went to often never taking any notice of the height restriction. Forgetting I had the bikes on I managed to pull all 4 bikes off still attached to the roof rack bars and carriers. Damaged roof rack bars and scratches on the boot of car. Managed to only damage one brake lever on a bike which ended up all in one piece sitting on the road. Managed to pick the lot up strap it all back on the car and continue journey. Cost to repair bikes minimal damage to car a bit more to fix and respray.
Shows how tough the bike actually were.

Brand new Vittoria tires, mounted on modern 700 rims, absent mindedly installed on a vintage roadbike meant for 27" wheels. My first ride didnt last a city block before brake pads sliced sidewalls and tubes. Fortunately only destroyed front. I turned it into a belt. I like my $85 tire belt though.

Mine was in early 90s. Bought a new GT road bike, purchased a set of second hand uber-expensive aero (for that time) deep alloy rims. Went down a 20% grad8ent dead straight 600m descent to see how they felt. Heard the first ping as a spoke pulled out of the rim, quickly followed by a ping orchestra at both ends, but I wasn't really interested as I was absorbed by the crash I was having. Everything written off. Manufacturers judgement was that the rims hadn't been correctly treated at manufacture. The rims were simply too soft to hold the spokes. Got a new bike, new rims, and grew lots of new skin

My most expensive mistake so far: Last week, i somehow managed to miss the flat section of the kerbstone and wrecked the front wheel for good with the high kerbstone next to it. Had to do a front wheel upgrade to my Rose ProSL way ahead of plan, siiiiigh. I'm not quite sure what happened in that very moment, but i had instant empathy from pedestrians nearby. I even managed to damage the hub, the rim is bent in 2 dimensions. Changed for a DT swiss PR1400 Oxic which is doing fine since yesterday!

Most expensive mistake: first outside ride of the year (cold weather is indoor training time) and after literally just one km tried to jump a curb on my Canyon Speedmax. Apparently my bike handling skills degraded over the winter. Double flatted, ripped the tire and chipped my deep section carbon front wheel

    Most expensive cycling mistake:
Went for a family walk while a cycling event was on.
When we got to the car park lots of cyclists in the car park including two guys next to us towelling off.
My wife wanting to avoid all the cyclists drove off across the parking bay opposite and crunch a brand new bike had been set down on the ground right in from of our parked car.
I did the decent thing and bought it off the owner for £2000 and then spent £1000 fixing it!
But I did get a new bike out of it!

Si actually a de-restricted is legal on the road. All you would need is 1) an IVA, 2) number plate, 3) Vehicle Excise Duties, 4) minimum third party insurance and 5) and motorcycle helmet. Or a LEATT Helmet MTB 8.0 V21. As it is motorcycle certified. Plus licence ect.

This was the most passionate Hack/Bodge segment in recent memory. Righteous indignation at labelling a rescue/donation bike a bodge and immediate reflex to categorize a chain keeper as a hack almost reflexly. Well done, gets, well done.

That bike tow is a definite hack! I had to help a guy after an accident. He was riding a fixing with a bike on his shoulder. He was headed to the local coop when he crashed. Never heard the final damage, but his should was visibly out of socket and his spine and hip looked pretty jacked up. Anything that works without injury is a hack in my book.

  • @andersolin1790

Most expensive mistake was to not properly fasten the bike in the trainer before a Zwiftrace. Managed to rip the bike of the trainer in the final sprint destroying the rear derailleur. Adding insult to injury (literally) was telling my cycling buddies that I couldn’t attend the next group ride because I damaged my bike in a crash... indoors. My wife was sympathetic though: “maybe you should wear a helmet when you are zwifting honey?” But hey, I can live with those insults. Because I have to live with far worse things that have happened in my life; like that time when I asked woman in my neighbourhood when the child was due....I was so certain she was pregnant...well, you cant be right all of the time.

Most expensive mistake - Doing a core workout in my bedroom. Kicked my TT bike (the fastest bike at the 2020 ETU Sprint Duathlon champs) during a set of burpees, for it to fall on to the corner of my bed, cracking the top tube... Carbon repairs are not fun.

My « almost » most expensive bike mistake ever was when I strapped my DeVinci Hatchet carbon gravel bike to the hitch rack on my SUV... After a while on the road I realized I couldn’t see my bike anymore in my rearview mirror! In total panic I then stopped on the side of the highway to have a look at the rear of the vehicle... only to see my gravel bike laid on its side, horizontally, not touching the ground, only hanging by the straps that hold the wheels and tires to the rack!!! No damage at all! It looks like I had wrongly attached the top tube of the bike to the rack and it had loosened while on the road. Talk about luck ☘️!
