I have an older craftsman lt 3000 42 Inch 18.5 hp. Locked and starter could not turn the engine. Adjusted the valves. Fixed problem. Lasted 2 seasons and occurred again. Adjusted again and it fixed it. Apparent issue with Briggs & Stratton mower engines.
I have a yt3000 and cut 4 acres and it takes a tole on it. just replaced the oil pan due to mounts breaking from bots loosing from vibration. Replaced compression release, governor, seals and gasket, carb, mag, plug, pulleys, safety switch, starter, light harness, battery, and more i can't remember. I spend more time repairing than mowing!
Forgot to say thanks for the video . It's nice to see a knowledgeable craftsman at work. I like working on many things but dont have the tools to do this job. Thanks again
I Had three of those monsters at our church, and all three of them had that compression relief problem on the camshaft. They went bad 2x's and I finally junked em.
Hey I surely do appreciate you taking her apart. Just bought my first yt3000. I wonder if short term oil change intervals might help with some of these issues.
That's a tough call. It might work for awhile, but I think the problem lies in faulty parts. Apparently Briggs Stratton is obsoleting some parts, hopefully redesigning them.
I purchased a used yt3000 and bought a new battery for it but when I crank it the starter acts like its weak and there is a hesitation before getting past top dead center. Now if the compression release is not working would that not cause the starter to strain real bad before getting past the first stroke? How can I manually engage the Compression release?
I have the same mower and am curious if you know what the wires from under the fly are for ( they are cut) and a thin boot connector near the starter its a black wire with white boot connector
The loss of the decompression lobe had nothing to do with the rest of those issues. I would lay odds that the damage that you are seeing is from lack of oil maintenance. But, stranger things have happened.
Check that the valve guides are in the proper position, aluminum and steel due to heat will let the guide lift up and cause the pushrods to be damaged, this happens quit often,be sure to check those push rods or they may do serious damage if they come loose
Where do you get your parts from? I have same mower same engine blown motor rod broke and everything debating on rebuilding it I have rebuilt car engines but cant say I have ever tried to do a lawn mower lol
I have a model just like this one I bought used, can you tell me the best Weight OIL S.A.E. such as straight 30 weight or a multi blend like 10-30 I would appreciate an answer, oh mine takes an oil filter as well and I'll tell you it does make a difference. Thanking you in advance.. I also enjoyed your video and leaned a few things I didn't know..
Never understood why Briggs Startton use aluminum intake pushrods instead of steel, like they do for exhaust valve? If it were me I'd just order a steel exhaust pushrod, I'd be sure specs are the same, and install it instead. At least it would last.
Yes it has been a lot easier just to check the valve clearance you respond to that right away do the easy stuff first and then you could take it apart I have one now that's got the good valve clearance but it doesn't want to run but it's been soaked in water so
The most important in TH-cam video is SHOW How to repairs NOT show off the final step when you done, Teaching the people How to Do, not jump to the end of the work.
You still got that D140? Curious if you'd do an update on it, I've been trying to find one for myself but had no luck. My D100 is awesome but the manual trans is a drawback IMO
What a shame Briggs makes such poor quality garbage now, they used to be nothing but quality BITD. They keep up like this they won’t be around much longer! Beautiful dog BTW.
What would a fix like this cost. I have one that has the same problem. Same tractor 10 years old . Stopped after cutting grass no start. Could not check valves today new feeler gauge set does not have 004 005 006 007. Must be economy set. Lol. Calling an expert tomorrow. This is calling for a experienced tech. Not a once in a while repair tech . That's me. Owner.
Bought 1 a couple days ago for 500 The delivery guy brought it . My son parked it . I came home from work all it does is backfire . P.O.S. getting my money back in the morning.lmao.
It would have been a good video if you had shown how you fix the valves and you skip some section so people can't learn from you,big mistake taking the engine apart, even i would have check the valve before stripping the engine, thumbs down for this one.

I'm about to work on another one...
Bad compression release is very common now on B/S engines and I’ve had two Honda with it sticking and not freeing up
I just got another one in. Same engine, same problem.

It’s not the service but junk cheap parts
Great detail video? Question I bought an hour meter, found the black blue plug? How hard remove gas tank easier for me
I have one and when I turn off the gas will transfer to oil case

It sounds like the compression release isn't working. I don't know any way to manually release it.
Do you know the part number for the yt3000 21Horse platinum Briggs and Stratton can shaft?

I felt the same way

I’m shocked it didn’t crack the block because everyone one I’ve seen had block crack or hole in it
hey does a gear governor shaft replacable on a v twin briggs stratton engine 24 hp does anybody know

Just picked one up for free. I can't spin engine by hand. Oil looks ok. Got to tear into it
Let me know how it goes!

always check the valves 1st! a simple test of the valves will tell you if its the compression release valve or not
You still got that D140? Curious if you'd do an update on it, I've been trying to find one for myself but had no luck. My D100 is awesome but the manual trans is a drawback IMO
I don't have the D140 anymore. I've been working on a 155C lately...nice tractor.
Please get a tripod or reduce the amount you move the camera. I got seasick.
What a shame Briggs makes such poor quality garbage now, they used to be nothing but quality BITD. They keep up like this they won’t be around much longer! Beautiful dog BTW.
They still have some nice engines out there, but there are a few that keep showing up with consistent problems.
I really miss my Sears Suburban with the Tecuseh 12 with Temkin Bearings.
That engine is still going strong 53 years later.
Must be a bad run of chineseum parts,
Lawnmower hell...I swapped my motor out ...put a 2 cylinder in.
I was considering the same thing

I was screaming at you to check the valves early in the video.
LOL. I usually check the valves first, but I feel more comfortable after checking out the compression relief and cam shaft.
Bought 1 a couple days ago for 500
The delivery guy brought it .
My son parked it .
I came home from work all it does is backfire . P.O.S. getting my money back in the morning.lmao.
You bought a new one for 500? with a 21 hp craftsman engine?
These engine are pure Junk, I have had two of them and both had the compression relief broke.
Briggs just not what they used to be. Kohler not what they used to be. Kawasaki seems to be the leader of the pack now days
Yea right with those plastic gears breaking on those Kawasaki’s.
Brigg & Strat... is the problem. cheaply made, no better ...probably worse than a Chinesium engine. A once good company making crap now.
Ugh..ugh..ugh..ugh.....

In my opinion the mower is trash it really is
I've got another one doing the same thing.
Chinnez crap
