haha definitely... i remember reading an interview with Rivers. He mentioned that it took him a while to realize that he didn't have to sound like some kind of tough ass to sing in a rock band. Something along the lines of "I didn't know I could just sing with my regular voice, like I used to in the high school choir."
If my Weezer history serves correctly, this is from Weezer's third demo, often referred to as "The Real Demo". It was recorded at a converted garage in Hollywood "borrowed" by the band. At the time (Nov '92) this was considered the best-yet representation of the band despite the snares sound like what Karl describes as a tennis ball hitting a racket. I can't remember for the life of me what it was exactly recorded onto though.
I read somewhere that hearing a demo of this song is what convinced matt sharpe to move back down to LA and commit himself to playing in a band with Rivers. Do you think this was the version that he had heard? Or was this probably the version that they sent to Ric Ocasek (producer of the Blue album)?
@@pedromaiz88 This isn't the recording that convinced matt sharp to move to L.A. That move happened in March 1992. This track IS the third demo of this song; recorded in november of the same year (as said above) and was the version that they considered the best and sent around to labels. There was a second version recorded that is on the kitchen tapes that was recorded in the bands rehersal space (a garage) in august 1992
This sounds more edgy. Mustve been a tight call deciding between this and the version that made it onto the album. Amazing what a tempo change can do to the mood of a song
At the beginning, you can hear a little Korean spoken. This is another example of Rivers’ amp picking up Korean talk shows like it did in Falling for You
There's an ambiguity at the heart of this song.Teen angst, or something more? Why did the girl, whoever he's singing about, disappear? The line "wallet photograph" can easily be heard as "wanted photograph" suggesting a darker context. The contrast between the plucked acoustic and thrashed electric guitar emphasizes the duality. This is why the early Weezer was great.
Think of this song as a continuation of the story in "No one else" the previous song on the album. Because he was paranoid and jealous that someone would take his girl, he became controlling and this song is the aftermath of the breakup
Quite interesting. This is the third version of this song I listen to. The another one is from "opposite sides of the good old fence" which I think is highly epic cuz it sounds sadder and not so grungy... Then I hear this which is also fantastic, that solo adds a lot of power. I don't understand what Rivers was thinking when he applied all those changes till the final version, but I must admit I love them all.
@BurnedZero There’s also THIS demo version, from 1991. I think this is the first recording of the song ever made: th-cam.com/video/zMBmGymg6gw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aRMuxXUvIAAM1ZQw
AHHH those kitchen tapes… Remember back when =w= was my favorite band. Don't know where from, but I dld loads of rarities, rehearsals and demos. Some songs that haven been seen in records. Love this cover btw, they all look like they're 12, except for Pat, he looks 14-ish LOL
far too metal. I think No one else also used to have more intense shredding compared to the blue album version. The decision may have been an attempt to just not include gnarly solos on their album. Although Rivers originally wrote technical and well-played solos, they are pretty cheesy, to be frank. Like, 80s hair metal status. Although Rivers was a big metalhead before he started weezer, he was really trying to get away from that. By the time they recorded Blue, metal was deader than dead. It was a joke.

Yeah...can really hear that different tone in "Thief, You've Taken All that was me" and that Sew your Pants together song....I like it..he has an arsenal of vocals behind him
They did the solo, quite similar on the album, it's just a different set of chords behind the solo on this demo. On the album the riff behind the solo is the same as the rest of the song.
In it's defense, Raditude has 'Put Me Back Together', which although not up there with any of the classics, is still a lovely little number. Albeit one that could easily be covered by Katy Perry.
did you see them around 10 years ago?? pure awesomness. Dont get me wrong, that band is gone now, but originally they were great. One of the best bands of the last 90s.
Rivers does something strange with his voice on these demos and other early Weezer recordings that I've not heard him do since, that Cobain-like push rendering the tone a bit gravely. I wonder if Ric Ocasek encouraged him to avoid doing this with his voice.
Ive heard people say pinkerton is the best one without really hearing it or without hearing all the other albums. Its hard to argue with pinkerton being one of their best records but it seems like alot of people have heard its cooler to like pinkerton over the others. Personally I dont think any of their albums are bad, well except raditude but thats just one out of 9 or 10,but to me they all have a classic sound which has been consistent
This was from 2 years ago but I thought it was cool that you said "how do you even know rivers hates people with an opinion?" very valid question, sorry for being 2 years late
The first two albums are the best. That goes with a lot of bands. You're totally coming at his opinion from the wrong angle. Actually, you saying that everything after the first two albums is better, is extemely hypocritical with the whole point you're trying to make. I'm just happy the records exist, enjoy the music!!!
@flareagaman couldn't agree with you more. While the Blue album was more accessible, Pinkerton was just more raw rock. I knew I was going to like it right away from the intro "Tired of Sex" with the drawn out guitar notes and simple drumming...apparently the new album is supposed to be a lot more 'rock,' but only time will tell
Pinkerton is now one of the most misunderstood albums of all time, and my favorite Weezer album. Seriously, I think it's more catching and less generic than the Blue album. Though the generic-ness of the Blue ablum is what makes it great.
Weezer has no ''worst'' album. They are all good, just in different orders of preference. I personally have Green as last in my list, and Raditude in 5th. But all of the albums are great in their own way.
I thought Red was okay. It would be better if some songs (Heart Songs, Everybody Get Dangerous, Cold Dark World, and Thought I Knew) were replaced with the bonus tracks from Red. If that had happened, Red would easily be my favorite after Blue and Pinkerton.

I think that the snare drum sounds good
I genuinely love the snare sound on these demos, that's interesting btw about where the demos were recorded. So cool

I honestly prefer this to the final version. Being slower and slightly flat just does something for me

The world has turned and left me here
Just where I was before you appeared
And in your place an empty space
Has filled the void behind my face
I just made love with your sweet memory
One thousand times in my head
You said you loved it more than ever
You said
You remain turned away
Turning further every day
The world has turned and left me here
Just where I was before you appeared
And in your place an empty space
Has filled the void behind my face
I talked for hours to your wallet photograph
And you just listened
You laughed enchanted by my intellect
Or maybe you didn't
You remain turned away
Turning further every day
The world has turned and left me here
Just where I was before you appeared
And in your place an empty space

out of all the songs on the third demo, the "tennis racket" snare fits this best.
@vladd121 This isn't a cover, this is Weezer back in 1993.

they changed just enough so they could keep it on youtube without the record company claiming copyright infringement

"but god damn someone punch rivers in the face" LMAO. don't we all wish that could happen.
No. No we don't.
not sure, but somewhere i read that they would add extra distortion by doing something to the tape itself, not sure if it applies to this
