Sometimes when I severely outpower my opponent I set an easier defense so at least they have a shot. I hate one sided GACs and would rather it be interesting instead of steam rolling them

There's something so charming about the goold old innocent days of Carbonite. I get nostalgic looking back and laughing at myself, scouting out my opponents and trying to pull an Einstein manuever planning my... 4 attacks. Lmao. A tip from me to you, as someone who has consistently spent his entirely career having to punch up and permanently lives in leagues outside of my roster... Whenever you're up against someone who should clearly beat you if they use a single brain cell, you just have to go in being as stingy as possible with extra banners. I would have 4-manned the geo's (which, as we saw, would have STILL been overkill) and definitely would have left out the Marauder on ships. Your ONLY win condition is outbannering your opponent when they have every resource they need to win, so that's the thing you just have to permanently focus on. "Playing safe" to take zones isn't really relevant because you're just going to lose on banners anyhow even if you full clear... so either you win with undermans, or you lose in every other possible scenario. Trust me. I got into Kyber at 4.7M GP with 2 GL's and 1 GL ship, and the ENTIRE TIME it was basically nothing but cheese. I recognize I'm not saying anything you don't know, but I have a feeling your brain still lives in Kyber, and it now needs to live in Carbonite. Lol.
When youre fighting geo fleets, especially with negotiator just wait to shoot spy until you have the mass assist so you can insta kill him and not have to deal with the stealth, shooting soldier doesnt trigger the stealth
