As an Aussie I have to say I’m disappointed there hasn’t been an up to speed episode on the Ford Falcon yet. An absolute icon in Australia and the bread and butter of young car guys/gals all over the country. $500 AU falcon with a welded diff and stockies anyone?

When you bring up the Aussie Charger, but talk about the 340 (E55) equipped version, and not the 300+ HP 265 *straight six Hemi*... A car that was a better race car than the Falcon GTHO in every way minus the long straights and steep climb at Mt Panorama.

I'm from South Africa and it's Badged as an Opel Calibra here too not a Chevy ...my uncle had a white one...sadly he and my cousins where involved in an accident... thankfully they all survived but the car was beyond repair ...I remember as a child it was one of the coolest cars around
The E49 Charger R/T with the 265 Hemi is the Valiant I want ;-) .
The Phase 3 GTHO was reportedly the fastest 4-door in the world at the time, good for 140mph from a 4-speed, and those power figures are said to be more like 385hp, but they downplayed it for "social and political responsibility".

Ah the Calibra! I absolutely love these cars, I grew up around them in the early-late 2000s as my dad has had a Calibra Turbo 4x4 since 2000.
Genuinely beautiful cars that are becoming rarer by the year, partially due to rust issues.
My buddy had one when we were stationed in Germany. It was nice until it met a patch of snow on the Autobahn one night.
Used to work at the Dodge NAP while they made Durangos. They had a fleet order and had to outfit some with armor panels and an oversized reinforced sunroof for a turrent mount.

But, the previous gen Chevropet Montana is way way better that the one on the video. The 1st. gen Montana is based on the Chevrolet Corsa II (in south america) or the Open Corsa C (in europe). Much better built quality and much better Chasis, bigger engine and better looks!
Check for 2002-2008 Chevrolet Montana and the "Sport" version is beautifull.

In the USA during 2017 and 2018, if you picked up a brochure for a Honda Pilot, you would see in the brochure a photo of a dashboard control that power folded the exterior rear view mirrors. Next to the photo was a disclaimer that the feature was "only available in certain models".
My wife bought the "Elite" model which was the highest end trim with very few options available. Not one of those options contained the folding mirrors.
Seems the only models that had this feature were only available in Canada. Not only that, but the wiring harness was so different between the two countries that it could not be easily retrofitted.
The Chevrolet Montana also gets sold in South Africa as the Chevrolet Utility and we call “Pick-Ups” Bakkies

That's easy, they stopped making them in 2017. Now Australia's version of 'muscle' comes in the form of a US mustang and US camaro or you can buy 2nd hand, if you can find someone willing to sell one that doesn't need a complete ground up rebuild.

I have to say I love the look of the montana, definitely similar to a 2012 Holden Colorado with the curves etc, since its based off of a hatchback it certainly is a ute, although with front wheel drive its essentially a Jumbuck...Which means its the last of the utes.
Kind of painful to know that us Australians went down swinging by building 2 of the greatest v8 utes (holden/hsv and ford) only to have Chevy continue building utes elsewhere.

Facts
My old man got a speeding ticket driving the exact Falcon ute shown in that pic. I was working at Ford as an engineer at the time and was working a problem with the Red XR8 owned by the marketing department. Dad took it for a drive and got done speeding when I drove the car home one night or one weekend. Still one of my favorite factory wheels on the XR8.
The Chev Montana was also sold in South Africa and was a continuation of the Opel Corsa Bakkie (Bakkie = Truck out here). Corsa's were a line of small hatchbacks and sedans which included a small bakkie, load 750kg's. In 2011 Chev took over and re-badged it as the Chev Utility for a year or so using the original Opel styling and the following year brought out the Montana calling it the Chev Utility. The indicator/wiper levers are repurposed from the local favourite, the Opel Kadett. I owed a '94 Kadett for 14 years, 1.6is, Short range gearbox, 4-1 branch, 50mm freeflow, 272 cam, Unichip, Vernier gear, Dropped, TSW EVO-R rims, punching out a whopping 78KW at the wheels and 160nm twerks. Now I own a Chevy Ute/Chevy Montana, standard but with my old rims, warranty is up soon. Reliable and trustworthy, I miss my Kadett but I do appreciate being able to cart shit around in my small bakkie. Unfortunately GM pulled out of South Africa a few years ago but parts are cheap and there were well over a million sold here, unlike the next cars. If you read this, please have a look at some of the hottest, unique to South Africa cars, check out the Opel Kadett SuperBoss, 2L 16V, N/A 168BHP, the local BMW 325is killer and the Opel Kadett 200TS Golf GTI killer. The Superboss was designed for '91/'92 Group N racing with a Cossy head and upgraded internals along with a locally designed LSD, all attached to the Opel C20XE 2.0 16v, specifically built to beat the BMW 325is. Won on sunday, sold on monday boys. in '93 Opel went a different route and focused more on safety and luxury than performance. Delta who distributed GM was still into racing and wasn't happy, they imported 2.0L turbo engines usually used in the Opel Calibra, all wheel drive, and mated them to a version of the locally designed front wheel drive LSD and a 6 speed gearbox, this is 1994. Not many of these machines survived due to the unruly behaviour of the 203bhp front wheel drive monster, torque steer and understeer being the main culprits to squirly drivers.

The Holden Caprice was actually sold in the US as the Chevrolet Caprice PPV, as a stripped down cop car.
The shorter version of the car (the Commodore) was also sold here as the Pontiac G8.

I've owned three Falcon V8's 67 Fairmont XR, 1968 XT and now i have a XC GS Rally Pack 1978.
All have been ball tearing speed machines.
Some Holden's have been up there with the power but have handling issues along with poor braking.
I've got a VAUXHALL calibra. Ive had it since 1992 it's a 2.0 litre 8 valve and couldn't imagine it being any faster. It only comes standard with 115hp but does 160mph because how aerodynamic it is it gives Ferrari and porche drivers a very big surprise. Gotta love an underdog like the calibra

Story rates 8/10, gets higher if you mention:
-Chrysler Aus did it behind ma mopars back by squirreling away 1/7th the budget (approx 1m)
-the development of the 215 from its humble beginnings through the 245 all the way to the 265 all through boring it out on a block with already thin cylinder walls and having to re-tool to allow this.
-the engine failures on the engine dyno (the Aussies went full send for 10 hours with standard plugs) (when the yanks said 10 hour test)
-getting the Italians involved to fix the lean issues on the mixtures on one and 6 especially.
The Charger has a heck of a story.

@@mitchellbaker4847 the hemi 6 didn't start out as a 215, the yanks originally designed it as a 4 litre (245) but chickened out in favour of a v8 for a base truck motor. The yanks told us it wouldn't handle boring bigger, but the 265 is not the same casting as the 245 so no problem there.
So
...SO wrong on the charger my man...we built our own hemi. The 265 hemi with 3 side draft Webbers. it was the charger R/T E49 and packed way more power than the v8 model, it had 303BHP for it's 4.3L inline 6 and a 4 speed manual. It's extremely sought after today.
Maybe if the spent more time researching the car instead of Kangaroo’s they might have discovered that info 🤦🏼♂️
This comment needs more likes. The E49 is a beast and highly underrated in Australia despite a highly successful racing career, especially in New Zealand. Also, they showed a 4 door Valiant Pacer for most of it.

Montana's used as a ute for most of the time, there is some tuneds around too
but the Calibra is really hard to find, and when you find it, there can be two situations:
- Destroyed Calibra with no hope
- Fine Calibra, but too expensive to buy and way more expensive to maintain xD

USA decided to cancel the Falcon in 1969. Australia had invested millions in making it a good seller. That's when Australia decided to just keep making it.

We got the 1960s Falcons all the way up to the 1990s. Different front-ends, better suspensions, new interiors and unforgettable sporty versions.

The Falcon nameplate went away in the USA/Cdn market but; its basic platform lasted till 1980 under the Ford Granada, Mercury Monarch and Lincoln Versailles

Also, in regards to the Ford Falcon, they had a few engine options, a V8 version, as stated & a straight 6, in 2002 Ford Australia decided to put a turbo on the straight 6 (its called a Barra), they are insane engines, people are making HP figures above 600+ on stock internals, minus an oil gear pump & valve assembly upgrade.

@@heygek2769 Correct. Ford in Australia first brought out a car combined with a truck body and called it a sport-utility. Thus the ute was born. Australia really made some brilliant utes. Check out Falcon and Commodore utes.

so a ute is a same as what americans call a truck? because a truck here in GB is a smaller lorry, usually fixed (the trailer doesn't pivot)

I've had 2 park avenue ultra's, a 94 and a 2001, my favorite car to drive ever, so comfy and for such a heavy car great acceleration and pretty good mileage. they had the 3.8 L V6 with a factory installed supercharger. Sadly I had to move from Texas to Greece and couldn't take it with me.

Those kinds of small trucks like chevy Montana (here in Brazil we call it "picapes", a derivative pronunciation of pick-up trucks) are really common around cities here, big trucks are a little rare and there's a variety of kinds of these small ones like Fiat Strada and VW Saveiro

We had the 'Holden' Calibra here in Aus in a turbo model. I wanted it as my first car as a kid however you never see them in the wild anymore. Running at least.
There was a Opel Calibra turbo aswell. It came with a turbocharged version of the c20xe called the c20let.
Be glad you didn't get one,would have been the biggest mistake in your life,they were a massive POS in the Australian climate and that's why none exist on the road anymore. Only sold for couple of years thank god. Had a mates gearbox completely lock up on us one day on a bend and sent us into a river backwards. Bloody death trap on wheels.

Valiant Charger is a 2 door. U had VH Pacer in pic yewl. Any yeah, that mini truck pretty much a ute. A small one tho
The pacer came in nifty colours "Little hood riding red", "Thar she blue" and "Green Go".
Also the Vh e49 six pack with 4 speed also ran a very quick 14 second 1/4 mile and a shade over 6 seconds 0-60mph. Very quick stock six cylinder that was quickest accelerating production car in Australia for nearly 30 years

@@-hiltsey5646 No, it's Grand Touring Handling Option. I've got an XW Falcon workshop manual with a bunch of service bulletins, one of which announces the availability of the XW GTHO Phase I in mid-1969.
The Sierra model was sold in North America as the Ford/Mercury Tempo/Topaz... the hot hatch version was briefly available from Mercury dealers as the Merkur XR4ti.
You forgot the most important fact about the GTHO when it was produced it was the worlds fastest 4door production car
A custom order 1971 Plymouth 4 door Roadrunner (police pursuit pack). It’d be interestingly get a GTHO Phase III, a ‘71 Mercedes Benz with the 6.3litre V8 and a ‘71 V12 Jaguar XJ together for a definitive comparison. That being said the Mercedes and the Jaguar are luxury saloons that have very powerful engines, the Falcon is an out and out race car made legal for the road. Apples and oranges perhaps.
@@nigelcreighton2411 the v12 jag had nowhere near the power of the falc but would undoubtedly handle better with it's irs. The xjs killed them at bathurst in 85, but that was no road car ( neither were it's competition!) The phase 3 was only "tuned" for racing as per rules of the day.

The lack of mentioning of the 1973 Ford Flacon XB. Yeah sure the one listed is nice, but holds nothing to the 1973 XB, a shrunk down Gran Torino without a better way to describe it. And obviously famous for its Roll as the Interceptor in the Mad Max films.
