My writing took off when I stopped plotting. It took my characters places I never knew it would and they met characters I never thought would stay. Now after this first draft, I do the research and flesh out the characters more, and see where it takes me this time. In a way the first draft without a plan becomes the plan for the second draft, and so on, getting richer every time, until the path is clear and every gun had it's purpose.
There's a story I have that needs writing. It's a story only I can tell, but I am no pro...floundering about TH-cam looking for some useful advice...and now YOU appear and create unexpected laughter within me. Good. It is do-able after all. THANK YOU !!!
Thanks, you have been an inspiration that has kept me writing as I make the transition from a teacher of engineering to a novelist.... well, that is the hope.
This channel has the ability to become a leader in the writing department. I’ve been a writer for a decade now, and somehow I came upon this channel. Excellent info!! 🌟
You always get it absolutely right, Malcolm. I've been doing a bit of time travelling to sort something out in my almost ready second novel. I realised that one of the minor characters was going to appear in book three so I had to foreshadow!
yes, the author is the god of the world he has created, therefore exists outside of its timeline, so the author can travel anywhere in that timeline and make changes at any time
Your insights have been helping me a bunch as I work on this first draft. Nearing 40k words now. I know its rubbish, especially the beginning, but I already see the possibilities of changes to make it a lot better and put them in my notes. Like you said, first draft first to discover what the story is about, then refinement. Still a ways to go though, Im sure this thing is going to be at least 80-100k words before its done.
Save your money, it's made of the same as George Orwell's, Ray Bradbury's and Aldous Huxley's time machines. Foresight and common sense is all it takes. I love your lectures and tomorrow 13:38 I will receive the last letter on Gateway to Narnia 🙂 @@TheOxfordWriter
Are bus tickets in Oxford really round? I live in the US and have never been to England. I'm so glad I discovered your channel today. I subscribed and signed up for your free writing course. Thank you very much!!😊
I have trouble with setting. The story works until it runs into 'where'. 'Where' is always 'there' because 'here' doesn't work. And I've never been 'there' even though it's a real place.

The ones in the town centre are round, the ones to the outlying districts are starfish shaped :)

How do you feel about writing novellas...around 40k words nowadays?
I don't really have any thoughts about them - I've never written one and the last time I read one was probably in school. What do you have in mind?
