    Thanks for the assistance.
    I ended up using the two prybar and hammer method, but I wouldn't have figured it out that the shaft was tapered without your help.
    If the taper hadn't released, I was on my way to the tap and die set!

    Great video. Same technique is used on Polaris ATV to remove the primary clutch from the engine, but polaris already has the threads in the clutch for the large screw in bolt. I have removed the bad armature from my older Generac L4001, I only wish I could come up with a sutiable replacement on this apparent no longer available replacement part. Complete engine awaiting repair if I ever manage to find an armature. Thanks again for the clear, concise video.

    This worked like a charm, thanks!. Btw, I have a Coleman PM0435005 and the fan (0063406) seems to have ripped itself to shreds. I cannot for life of me find a replacement. If I just remove the fan would strapping a box fan to the chassis dissipate the heat enough to make this a usable product again or am I screwed? Are there any work-arounds, 3d printed parts, aftermarket, etc??

    Thank you for this video, it really helped me out
    I showed my buddy what I did and he was impressed
    I was given a generator with a seized Briggs and Stratton engine and was thinking of replacing it with a Harbor Freight engine. After getting the armature off, I used a copper bar and a hammer to drive the piston down. The engine freed up somewhat and so I tore it down completely. The rod and crank were not that bad. It looks like to piston was what had it seized. Any ideas why? Thanks again for the video.

      It just takes that one time where not enough oil coats the cylinder wall where the rings make contact sliding up and down, either because the oil level was low, or was run mistakenly without oil after an oil change. On a brand new engine it is always a good idea to put a squirt of oil into the spark plug hole before starting. I hope this was of some help.

    Great video. Do you have any suggestions on how to put the armature back on the tapered shaft? I torque mine down to the specs in the manual but the brushes do not line up with the slip rings. The armature needs to be seated another 1/4 inch onto the shaft but I don't know how to make that happen. Any help would be appreciated.

    No luck with removing the armature on my Generac 7500EXL. Also tried your dead blow hammer method while pressure applied with the bolt/rod. Also, tried after soaking overnight with penetrating oil inside the armature shaft and on the taper shaft between the motor and the armature fan. Then I tried striking a longer 3/8" threaded rod with a sledge hammer while prying outward on the armature fan. Still no luck. Any other ideas? Thank you for the excellent videos.

    I have an onan 6.5 on my service truck and in my RV. I have a few 4.0's loose. when I rebuild them, I take a 1/2 to 3/4 filled 2 liter bottle and wedge it under the armature when I pop it. the water acts as ballast so it doesn't shoot out. you want it lightly wedged under. never had a problem.

    I have a 10kw Briggs and Stratton all house home generator. I even had a service tech come out twice a year to maintain and check it so it would always be ready.
    WELL, this guy wasn’t doing me any favors because the first major storm and power outage it died after 20 minutes of use. The motor and Genny has only 20.5 hours on it so you can imagine my frustration. I saw pieces of rubber all over inside the protective cover and I smelled Natural Gas very strongly. To make a long story short. The guy pulled out the protective insulation that sits on top of the Generator between the Gen/ armature part which gets pretty hot during use. The gas lines are a foam type rubber and the lack of insulation allowed the lines to break down and fail. ( this all the pieces of rubber)
    My question is this if you would be so kind to give me your professional opinion:
    Can I clean out the interior well and replace my gas lines with a solid black gas pipe type? The engine runs perfect, well it was up until in no longer got any fuel.
    I’m semi-handy and I have a lot of tools. I’ve done my own car repairs for many years. However, I wonder if you think it’s an ok idea to re-pipe the lines that way or should I use the same type and just re-insulate the lines against the heat that ate the other lines.
    BTW, as soon as I called my service guy and told him what happened, he decided to take the LOW road and say that I must have pulled out the insulation blah blah blah.
    Needless to say he never stepped foot on my property ever again. Gosh I hate cheaters and liars. There is nothing less honorable than a liar.
    So what do you think?
    I’ll pay you to do it all if your anywhere close to me. I’m in Massachusetts on the South Shore??
    Your probably half way across the country huh?
    Anyways, thank you for your informative page and your time.

    I have an 8750 black max generator with bad winding's. I ordered a complete rebuild for the alternator but it came with 3 wires coming off the winding's (2 black and one white) they are not labeled. The original winding's had 4 wires. (blue red white brown) and the rotor has a the studs the wires attach to but there is no stud for L2. Did I get the wrong parts? or is there a way to deal with this. Thanks Paul

    Hi, CAN you do a video on how to 'flash the field' on a Generator rotor ?

  • @darrowfortheprosecution1404
    @darrowfortheprosecution1404 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Adding anti-seize to the shaft defeats the purpose of the 'engineered taper' on the shaft. The taper on the shaft and the corresponding female taper on the rotor are, as their name implies, engineered to make for a jam fit between the two parts. You can find this type of connection on drill presses (Jacobs taper #1,#2, or #3) on the tie rod ends of vehicle steering systems and many other points of connection where power must be transmitted thru the connection. Putting anything on the surfaces will possible render the connect less than reliable. the connection is SUPPOSED to be tight and difficult to get off. One way to keep from having a surprise loosening when tightening the bolt is that once the bolt is tightened sufficiently to create a good amount of resistance, take a steel hammer and smack (that's a technical term) the end of the bolt head sharply and the rotor mass will drop off into your hands. Easy Peasey.

    • @saulcastrejon3843
      @saulcastrejon3843 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jordan Bronson while you are concerned and you should be ! about damaging parts , you will not believe me you are not moving the armature 6inches from the shaft to cause damage. The slightest thousandths of an inch that move will separate the armature from the tapered shaft. Tapping a thread and using a long bolt is not many people can do and its time consuming , use the same bolt that holds the armature leave it a bit loose and hit it one or 2 times with a chipping gun hold the armature with your hand and it will fall off. The bpm “impact” of the chipping gun wont hurt the crank “shaft” . Just my .02cents give it a try you wont be disappointed

    Hmm the difference in terminology between our language annoys me. :D To me, a bolt("bult") is a metal rod without threads, that's used to fasten things. If it has threads, it's a screw. But in english it's clearly different.

    Great tip on the puller. I wouldn't have known that the armature was on a taper. Is there usually a shaft key involved or just the bare taper? If it is the taper alone that is transmitting the power to the rotor shaft, then I would be a bit leery of putting any lubricant other than light machine oil to prevent corrosion. The taper is meant to lock together.
    I just watched your promo video. I think that you have one of the most clean and professional looking channels I have seen. I am now subscribed.

    Hi Guys
    First, thread the inside end of your rotor tube with the appropriate size tap and find a suitable bolt with a good amount of thread. Stand the Generator vertically with the rotor at the top. Wrap a good amount of pipe tape on all the threads of the bolt you found. Fill the rotor shaft hole with water. Start the bolt into the end of the rotor shaft and using your favorite electric impact tool, run the bolt in fairly quickly and the hydraulic pressure will pop the rotor off the end of the crankshaft. Works every time. If its leaking around the threads allot, put more pipe tape on your bolt.
    Cheers
    Willy
