I can not understand how could you write that "is seems played with NO control and NO logical sense". Tony Williams is in TOTAL control of what he is doing, he is reacting and playing in a PURE musical sense, he is ONE with the drum kit. Astounding.
Rusty James I can understand why one would say it, in defense of Rusty James. It's ignorance. If you don't understand the language then it seems like trash. It's ok. This isn't for everyone. Tony is awesome, but he's not superhuman. He practiced his ass off! He also had to see a psychiatrist at one time because he felt he didn't make music that appealed to anyone. If you can't tell, I'm really inspired by this guy.
Maick95 it was certainly intriguing, that’s why I had to share it. I was hoping someone else had read it it otherwise. I welcome the discussions about drumming. I am an instructor and knowledge is power. I started a bit late in my career, but I’m a bit more seasoned now. I have realized that the music is more important than the players. That’s the best advice I can give to anyone. But it’s certainly fun to talk about them from time to time.
How that lunatic can solo like that, leave such huge pauses and still know exactly where he is coming out of that solo on the 1 in such a high tempo, ill never know. One of the greatest jazz drummers of all time.
Does he actually come out on time? Or does the band know that that last little snare fill he does is the signal to jump back in. The bass player looks like he barely catches the cue. You can see him watching tony the whole time so that he knows when to meet him on the 1. It's probably not the same exact tempo
you are correct, that cue has been used extensively throughout the quintet in the 60s. Tony probably had a loose idea of the form in his head, surely. However I don't think relegating yourself to the form of a tune whilst playing at this level would be ideal for anyone. @@user-dc7um4pr3f

The look on Ron Carter's face @1:45 = PRICELESS! The kid...Tillmon Anthony Williams, is wearing these guys out. That mad tempo. Only Tony could play like this. Looks like whoever booked this gig couldn't afford to ship his Gretsch kit over. This clip is a rare look back in history. One of the greatest ensembles of all time.
roadrocket7 you are out of your mind if you truly believe that ron carter or any other top bassist) would be run over by tony Williams--or anybody else! you obviously have not listened to the work of dizzy, parker, max roach and others from the 40s and even before that. you're talking about the best of best. what I marvel at is tony's electric ride cymbal work behind miles and wayne. and miles always ended his solo on walkin' with the same phrase to signal tony's solo which tony then repeated at the end of his solo before wayne came in.
If your ears aren't open enough, you won't 'get' Tonys solo. These guys were playing on a super high level so many years ago. Beautiful. Next stop after this is david s. ware-ville.
Tony Williams is a Picasso on the drums. But also pay attention to Herbie Hancock: he is really listening at the end of this clip. Amazing to see the details, nuances and secrets of the great masters...
Totally agree man. Too many comments on here by folks who may/ maybe(?) didn't quite grasp what Tony was doing. He was WAY over most drummer's heads even at this early stage of his career. He was groundbreaking in every way. His teacher/ mentor Alan Dawson was too. I had the utmost privilege of seeing Alan in concert in 1981, accompanying pianist James Williams, in Memphis. His drumming was simply mind-boggling. I could hear so much of what Tony absorbed. Notice at the end of Tony's solo, where the band joins back in, that Tony's left foot is not on his hi-hat pedal.
My favorite part or thing about Tony Williams drumming is how and when he plays music not at all when he solos... just the way he plays music in an ensemble. It amazes me.
So, a lot of chatter here about Tony's playing lacking control, playing free, petering out at the end, etc. Right, except it's bullshit. Anybody that says any of that simply doesn't grasp the concept of playing a solo over song form. This is an extremely melodic solo .... he is soloing it like a horn player.... he event pauses as a horn player would . Re: "he seems to just stop at the end...REALLY? Then how come every member of the band comes back in , in unison on the 1, precisely at the end of Tony's solo? It is because they were following Tony's "melody line". Watch it again, try to keep up.
AS you know dear Mr. '' t3wells '' the youTUBE posts and opinions are ..OPEN.. to any sort of comments inclused ''yours'' regarding the .*.melody played by Tony Williams.*.. Ciao fabio .,Roma ..-
I love tony’s playing here, and totally agree with you that it is very melodic! However, I believe this solo is actually open and not on the form per se, the band comes in correctly after tony’s solo because of the final phrase he plays which he seemed to use as a gimmic on many live recordings to show the band that his solo was done. He ends his open solo on Walkin’ from Four & more the same way :) With that said, I totally agree with everything else you said!
@@jacoblindberg9268 That's what I think people are missing. Great bands aren't glued to a tempo or a note on a page. They're just in time together. That's all that matters. Doesn't matter if the old tempo was lost during the solo, that last little lick like you said signifies him coming back in. It's a pick up to ensure everyone comes back in on 1.
Rainy Sunday's in Brooklyn. McIntosh amp glowing, LP records and this music playing, nice cup of tea. such fond memories. 1980's. I can almost smell the house and the wood.
It's been a while. I just watched this again. I have new thoughts. One thread discussed about how he seems to abandon the solo at the end. I agreed at first, and now I disagree. Tony is doing what he always does. Works through the themes and variation. When he's finished with where he's taking it, he just plays the little horn melody that Miles left off with. It's the same on other recordings.
That answers my question about how Ron Carter could be there right with him when he jumped back into the song. It was a cue that Carter was evidently used to hearing.
@@FawleyJude Was this not a Miles thing, I seem to remember somebody referencing this returning to what Miles played during their solos , as a point for the next player to pick up on or for the band to come back together . Hey Ryan Renteria. Thanks for that comment. Where did you hear about time no changes. I listen to the second quintet exclusively, but I don't read books on the subject, and I never heard of this before. I recognize it though. I really wanted to make a peaceful comment previously to take the conversation past Jazz this and Jazz that. Because you are correct. The other comments are true also. This music was experimental. I have read and heard during interviews with other members of the quintet that they felt a sense of e.s.p. Between one another. The label "spiritual music" reminds me of something Miles would use instead of "Jazz". I'm not exactly sure what Jazz is anyway. I think it might be a point in time during the history of this music. I would never call myself a Jazz anything.

@@fabiobaglioni7617 social media has a way of communicating through likes and in some apps through dislikes and comments. you are sharing something amazing with a negative comment. the tradition and maybe the humor on youtube is to keep that famous comment of asking who would dislike this awesome video. so i was answering that. dislikes i am sure are not towards Tony. actually your upload gets its likes mostly regarding TW. I have a personal allergy to negative comments on jazz performance and fatigue caused by explaining or discussing the beauty. the fairplay of bypassers is to move on instead of expressing dislike. and mathematically speaking negative + negative = positive. So i believe dislikes to your dislike were left with intention and they were negative to your comment and were positive to Tony''s play. I am not being a fanatic here. So I know that you refer to that solo only and not Tony in general. So i truthfully and wholeheartedly think that your statement referring to that solo has wrong diagnose. Because the 2 qualities you are judging is a- control and b- logic. i find plenty of both during this short video. If i had to make a topic in terms of logic, i would maybe say the opposite! if i had to criticize for the love of criticizing i would say he was using too much logic at that moment! talking about control ... virtuoso level of talent, who is literally famous of having absolute control, which goes for others including miles, here right at that time of the jazz timeline , were literally writing history. they are checking out what is beyond. control is at max to a level of staying in control while testing losing control . miss the beat ? control lost. well he doesn't. skip notes? that''s miles' school. as much he is known as Prince of Darkness he was a master of silence. to play what's not there to play the unknown and not to play the obvious. this has the most free effect on drummer. metronome is the obvious and the melody played on it creates a rhythm. both simultaneously exist in drummers beat keeping. but when he removes the beat keeping and leaves the melody alone and when this is done by the drummer himself it leaves a lot to the listener. also many players in high level, lack to include silence to their play. rest is equally important element in creating rhythm. so Tony salutes Miles's school demonstrating silent notes by not playing almost exaggeratedly in order to highlight. sometimes live performance helps the listener to connect. many of miles' 80s work or even the period following the years of this video is like that too. you drool when you see them in a silent way. when you only hear them sometimes it is harder to connect to the logic. live effect on listener''s connection here works the opposite way. what you see takes away the effect of whats happening in sound from concentration. he is showing how he does it! it is like seeing the moonwalk first time and it is magic that the floor slips under feet. but when one demonstrates the steps, the magic is gone so actually that moon effect is harder to see.. now you know how the rabbit is pulled out of the hat. this moment actually was exceptional since you normally almost never get to see the missing notes. In short, Tony demonstrates the logic of how he controls it so YOU don't get lost in magic. he is saying this is not magic this is logic. As a personal note on this: I specifically from this very moment stole this idea and applied it to my live performance on sax or flute demonstrating silent notes for a while by now. Regards.

Comparing Tony with Buddy Rich, I can see that this is a conceptual leap forward because Tony's creative mind is independent of his limbs. @@fabiobaglioni7617 I see a pause at 44 seconds where Williams decides to try something different. He is improvising. When one improvises, not everything is perfect. However, when I listen to this solo without watching it, I hear no loss of control. Gabriel Joseph its jazz. It's in the moment, it's beyond all rights and wrongs of playing. It's like life- it is sporadic, always changing, and never what you expect. It's spiritual music.
Jonah Martinez I understand that it's jazz. I'm a jazz musician myself. Tony is amongst my top 3 favorite drummers. Feeling that he abandoned the solo doesn't make me feel his solo was "wrong", it's just a thought
actually, this quintet would regularly intentionally abandon the form of the tune they were playing, especially by 1967. that was kind of their MO. some people call it "time, no changes". it allowed them complete freedom to improvise and interact with each other. If you listen to a lot of the second miles quintet you'll hear them take massive liberties with the form. Tony almost never kept the form in his solos with this group, he was doing something more experimental.

I can not understand how could you write that "is seems played with NO control and NO logical sense". Tony Williams is in TOTAL control of what he is doing, he is reacting and playing in a PURE musical sense, he is ONE with the drum kit. Astounding.
Rusty James
I can understand why one would say it, in defense of Rusty James.
@@Jameskeith1972 Do you have a source on the psychiatrist thing?
Maick95 yeah sure. It’s been a while, but I’ll see if I can dig it up somewhere and send it to you. I’d like to read it again anyway.
@@Jameskeith1972 Don't mean to question you, it's that it sounds interesting!

YES , YES..!! I am agree with you ''NoOne'' that Tony Williams has been an important innovative drummer, but only after this ..drums solo..!?!.

Yes.
I don't think Williams intended for it to be a dense musical statement rather, a pre-cursor to Shorter's solo.
How that lunatic can solo like that, leave such huge pauses and still know exactly where he is coming out of that solo on the 1 in such a high tempo, ill never know. One of the greatest jazz drummers of all time.
It's about retaining the form/chord changes in your mind while you extemporize against it/them.

Tony Williams is a Picasso on the drums. But also pay attention to Herbie Hancock: he is really listening at the end of this clip. Amazing to see the details, nuances and secrets of the great masters...
Tony! At 17 he was playing with the maturity of a 30 + year old. What a cat! And what an inspiration to many!
RIGHT ON!!
;-)
@@jacoblindberg9268 That's what I think people are missing. Great bands aren't glued to a tempo or a note on a page. They're just in time together. That's all that matters.
Oh wow you're right. That's spooky. The last like 4 or 5 notes he plays on the snare at the end of the solo are similar to what Miles finishes with.
I will say this, if there ever were a drummer that deserved "the good life", it would be Tony Williams. He earned his freedom years ago, even before Miles Davis.Who can say that they could automatically bring something to the table at such an early age?He died too young, that's my issue. dislikes are not for tony.
Dear Mr ''TheZenBum'' at least my ..dislikes..are only referred at this drums-solo,.!!,.

He seems to play an idea, then hear it with fresh ears and reinterpret it, on the fly. Maybe it's similar to abstract art. He's freeing himself of form but still aware of the canvas.

@@fabiobaglioni7617 I see a pause at 44 seconds where Williams decides to try something different. He is improvising. When one improvises, not everything is perfect. However, when I listen to this solo without watching it, I hear no loss of control. If I analyzed Shorter's solo that follows Williams, it is likely that a few of his tone choices could be deemed "incorrect", based on his tone choices relative to the underlying harmony. However, like Williams' solo, Shorter's overall solo is excellent.
now i understand vinnie better
+Lorenz Müller Well said! Vinnie was very influenced by Tony's 1971 release Ego, which is one hell of a disc. Check it out. I recently bought Emergency! and it's not bad, too. Jazz drums have never sounded so LOUD.
Indeed! Tony, Vinnie, and Billy Cobham are IMO the top 3 drummers of all time (or at the very least, of the last half-century).
Elvin, too. I'd say Elvin and Tony are probably the most influential of the last half-century. Plus modern dudes like Eric Harland, Marcus Gilmore, and Brian Blade have been making some very interesting breakthroughs in expanding the vocabulary of the drum set.
if you are talking about jazz and fusion Billy Cobham must be mentioned. And if talking drummers who played on the greatest music, Jim Gordon is right there, too. Prodigy who played on more great music than anyone.

Great solo but am I the only one who feels like he kind of just abandoned the solo at the end?
i felt the same way but hey it is tony .... he might done that on purpose ...its jazz haha :P
