The rifles they use is the M1 Garand, a .30-06 semi-automatic battle rifle that was standard issue during WWII and the Korean War, and saw limited use in the Vietnam War. Today it is used for ceremonial use by the USMC, Air Force Academy Honor Guard, and the ROTC and JROTC. Its not just the Silent Drill Platoon that uses them, but the Marines stationed at 8th and I in Washington, D.C. (if you haven't, you should check out their evening parade). They must take quite a beating from the Marines during their drills, as there are a few videos of the rifle falling apart during the hand-off.
My husband is a Marine, served in Beirut in 1983 during both bombings, go to Camp Lejune in October for the Memorial service to honor those lost, surrounded by the most extraordinary men God made, the United States Marines!! Semper Fi!
I had the pleasure of seeing the Silent Drill Team in person many years ago. The discipline, precision and dedication of their unit is impossible to miss and an honor to see first hand. That day the assembly became as quiet as a church on Sunday and everyone was glued to the skill they were taking in. However, the event I was at had something different happen in the routine that left yet another impression of aww and respect with myself and many others. On the toss back from the Sargent to the junior Marine, something was off, either in the toss or the catch...and the junior Marine was hit square in the face with the stock of the gun. The room could have heard a pin drop at that moment. You would have thought the gun hit an invisible wall and not the Marines face for all the reaction the Marine showed. The junior Marine never moved a muscle when he was hit. Never made a sound. He just slowly bent down picked up his rifle and they continued on as if it had never happened. I have never forgotten that Marines unfaltering discipline and response. The Marines will always be a favorite of mine. Both for that impressionable day once upon a time...and possibly, maybe, for the Marines I am related to. 😉 For any soldiers out there who see this, no matter the branch, "thank you for your service."
I grew up on Navy bases and have always had the utmost respect for Marines. You will never find a more put together, honorable, loyal, disciplined or dedicated group of people anywhere. Marines are a different breed of person and we are all the better and safer for that fact. Duty, Honor and Country are not just words they say, it's their creed, it's their mission, it's their life. It's no wonder that their motto is Semper Fidelis... always faithful. I know a guy who lives in my town who became a career Marine (30+ years in) in 1951, and retired as a Sergeant Major. There is no mistaking him, even in a crowd. He still walks the walk and talks the talk... and still keeps his hair high and tight. His lid is still perfectly creased and you can tell that his clothes, even his sweatshirts, are pressed with creases that would cut you in half. He is the embodiment of what a Marine is and always will be.
Good Bless all of our Patrons and those of you watching who sacrificed themselves so that we can live the way we are privileged to live. We’re it not for you ladies and gentlemen where would any of us be right now? Certainly not using our MacBooks and IPhones to complain about our supposed hardships. I pray for our service members past and present every day and sincerely thank God for all of you and what you have done for all of us. Donfather I hope you realize how much pleasure and oftentimes comfort your channel gives to many of us. God Bless all of our active service members and especially all of our Veterans. The greatest Generation is disappearing fast but I promise you they will never be forgotten as long as I am able to post a message to honor them. God Bless and keep you all!
The timing, spacing and precision of every movement is so inhuman! I'd be terrified that the rifle would slip right from my hands with those gloves.. I could watch these drills all day and not get bored! Love the discipline!
I saw the thumbnail and I was like, "nnoooo......" lol This is one of the first videos I watched of these guys and is still one of my favorites if not my favorite purely because it's one of the first ones I watched. Lol
Watching these drills takes me back to when I was in my high school Air Force JROTC color guard. Drilling takes a lot of time and dedication. We had rifles, swords and flags. We won the state wide color guard competition and performed for the national anthem at all of the Chicago Bulls home games. And several parades. Drill is still beautiful to me. It is an art.
Each branch of the military has a drill platoon like this. Marines is the largest but you should watch the other branches videos as well! Just as cool but on a smaller scale!
They are amazing. Take it from me, I did jrotc for 4 years and commanded a lot of a color guard sequences for our school. We went to a competition and with only 4 people(2 rifles, 2 flags). It’s really really difficult. Armed IDR like this was hard even with commands being called
I'd like to point out that all the Marines of this platoon are selected for two-year assignments in their ceremonial tour, from the infantry schools. While in this ceremonial assignment, they also continue their infantry training, while also training for this duty. Their service rifles are fully functional infantry weapons. They are also responsible for maintaining their weapons and their uniforms-- no easy task. These guys go the extra mile. I'm a Veteran (Navy), and I'm proud of all branches of the military and the people who serve.
This one guy who was guarding the tomb of the unknown soldier was going through the changing of the guard, the person who was inspecting the riffle accidentally dropped it bayonet side first on the guards foot and it stabbed the guards foot but the guard kept going through his time guarding the tomb. There is a youtube video of it, just search guard of the tomb of the unknown soldier gets stabbed in the foot
For some reason, every time I see these guys do their thing, I'm struck by this imagined scenario where some moron criminals who didn't know these guys were going to be there that night decided to rob the venue and somehow end up attracting the platoon's attention. And from there, it's a very entertaining imagined scenario indeed, albeit an impossibly unlikely one. Also, worth noting the first rifle toss from the sergeant back to one of the men in line was nearly a failure. They're supposed to catch the rifle at the midway point of the forward grip. But damn it, if that marine wasn't about to drop that rifle!
Many yrs ago, my youngest brother was in the Navy and stationed in California. The Marines were on the other side of the fence. Now according to the Navy guys it does not take a man to be a marine - he put a poster of a big old silver back gorilla with that caption on it, the trash talking commenced, kicking dirt at each other, on each side of the fence. It was all in good fun, alleviated the boredom of boot camp, end result was there was mutual respect for each other, just young men posturing. Each one of those would have had each others six when the hammer slammed the anvil. The Marines always said it was nice of the Navy to give them a ride to where the action was. All branches of the military are amazing and impressive. Many thanks to all that have served and are serving.
I can't be 100% sure, but I believe I read somewhere that the rifles are 8-10 pounds, depending on if the bayonet is added or not. And that each member of the drill team (As it is more than just one single platoon in total) not only has to keep their rifles in perfect condition for displays like this, but also in perfect condition to be used in war. As the saying goes ... There is no "infantry" in the Marines, they ALL fight, even the cooks.
The Marines and the Navy Seals are the best in the military business. My father was in the “Air Force,” but even he told me that he probably wouldn’t have made it in the Marines. 😛 Those are some of your kin out there, buddy‼️👏🏻
What do your mates think of the United States Marine Silent Drill Platoon? I served at Marine Barracks Washington DC but not with the Silent Drill Platoon in the early 1970's. Semper Fi Mate
Are you sure you’re not an American!? All Americans should be made to watch your channel! Maybe they would learn what respect is!!! It’s a pleasure to listen to your critiques!
They are amazing but whoops do happen. It's awesome to see them not break. Also, look at their rank. They're YOUNG. E-2 in line. th-cam.com/video/o9q7b_2tkMo/w-d-xo.html No need to review this just a funny - WHOOPS - things do go wrong in an exhibition and things get broken. :) Still spectacular
Not to take away from all the thousands of hours these men put into being able to do this with zero called commands... but the drill team needs to brush up on some new routines. They've been performing the exact same thing since i was a kid, and im staring down the barrel of 50.
That's our Boys. Proud of them, yes indeed.
Amen Peggy and thank you!
Perfectionism at its finest
Thank you to all who served 🇺🇸 This was amazing!
Amen Jean and may God Bless you for acknowledging them!
I love your appreciation for our military. The Marines hold a special place in my heart. Well done!
Those are U.S. Marines, effing fighting machines ! Wearing their Ceremonial Guard Dress Blue Alphas.

Indeed Tony!

How precise they are, even upon stopping their feet stop in the position of stepping
I was just watching this yesterday and look forward to your reaction.
From a US Marine. Thank you for the kind words

you should watch the movie Stripes with Bill Murray and Harold Ramis you'll love it mate
Who hasn't watched that? But, would love Mr. Dons' reaction to excerpts from it!
Amazing! Though I wish people in the background would be silent in respect for these brave Marines. That's just my two cents...
I actually found them a little distratimg at times too
Does my heart good to see your reaction ❤
I agree with Ms. Barbara. You should check out the other branches also.
Awesome! ❤️🇺🇸🙏🏻✌🏻
I spent 6 years in the Marines during the Vietnam war. And if I had to do it again I would!! Semper Fi!!
I know you have already done a lot of AFL and AFLW stuff but could you react to Chloe Molloy Highlights.I think it would be a good reaction.
You might also enjoy the drill teams of the other branches of the u.s. military.
You should check out the silent monks sing hallelujah
Don’t forget that women serve, too! I served in the Marine Corps in DC and have seen the drill in person at the headquarters.
