if you listen very very carefully .. from 1.07 to 1.11 seconds you can hear a small child singing the famous Molly Malone song !... that song became popular around 1880s .... how amazing !
Finn ! FFS they weren’t able to record sound as well and pictures in those days 😂 What you are hearing has been dubbed in for effect. The girl singing Molly Malone would probably still be a young girl
Yeah but don't let that fool you. Under those fancy clothes they stunk of body odour. Can you imagine oral sex in those days? It would make you sick lol.
Not so, people took regular baths just like they do today only now its mostly showers. But sex was a subject that was off limits for most people back then. The main reason? No contraceptives, plus the majority of folks went to church every Sunday. Not like nowadays.

I was surprised to hear Ragtime Music in the background, ( thinking it arrived in the early pre-world-war years ) but I've just checked, and 'Alexander's Rag-time Band' was recorded in 1901--so well done.
Belfast as my third great-grandfather John Carmichael would've known it on his return visits to Ireland in 1902 and 1906. Incredible to see some of the regular sights he should've seen and experienced firsthand over 120 years ago!
Great job Mike ,the sound adds to this film of my home town. By the way, there is a sign on the trams just behind the driver which reads ; "The lifeboat rule is Women and Children first " At the end of High Street you could see the great ships of H&W in those days. Cheers!
What I always wonder, what these films do not transfer, how this long gone world must have smelled. Many years ago I travelled to Nigeria and the first thing which hit me, leaving the airport, was the different smell of the city.
Back then how you were dressed when you stepped out of your front door was the equivalent of the appearance of your sheet metal when you pull out of the driveway and drive to the store today. Of course our image falls apart when we step out of our cars and walk into Target in our sweat pants.
Note at around 3:00 - 3:02, the CameraMan - "Swings Left to catch a Lady in a White Dress on the Sidewalk" *Men, are so Predictable.* This film has an uncanny resemblance to the same era San Francisco, Market Street footage. Taken mere weeks before the Big Earthquake and Fire. - its on TH-cam, for those interested + a modern follow-up.
The pedestrians seem to all be well dressed. Not like the slobs you see today in Manhattan. The streets here are littered with homeless people sitting on the sidewalk with cardboard signs looking for a handout.
I wonder if it was possible to be lonely in those days. The sheer amount of people is just stunning. And those guys pushing the carts with big advertising signs on them. Wow. And the double decker trams. Today, people seem to do everything possible to avoid each other. Back then it didn’t seem possible. I wonder if there had been a better sense of community and a genuine feeling of common purpose, or if it was just the same old rat race.
I guess there was loneliness, but then there was no internet, no television, no telephones and there was less entertainment, so people met more often. I might be wrong, but I think so.
It was just a normal thing to wear, people didn't have cars and riding in a horse and carriage could be windy. As more people drove and buildings started to have central heating, widespread hat wearing became less common. It's the same reason a lot of people wore three piece suits. Obviously it was just normal back then, but people didn't have centrally heated homes so you needed warmer clothing, even in doors.
They probably took better care of those horses and donkeys more then anything because they were what kept food on the table they were most important to them bk then
Those bus trolleys look heavy, they should at least have four horses to pull them, I guess the story of black beauty had an impact on me when I was younger.
There's plenty of fire hydrants, just not as found in the USA/Canada. They're below ground level and covered with a metal cover. Still the same today. A vertical pipe is screwed to the hydrant outlet by the firefighter and a hose connected at 90 degrees at the top. Below ground they don't get damaged by vehicles, etc. (but do tend to silt up).
They had their commercials of their own those days ;ogden cigarettes hudson's soap , gibsons I wash one of them could tell me if there is anything like afterlife on the other side
Indeed, there is Heaven and there is hell, and you dob't need anyone to tell you that because it is God Himself who created us who revealed that in His Word in The Holy Bible. Come to The Powerful Ever Living Gid Jesus Christ and He will forgive you the years of ignorance, stupidity, lunacy, blindness, sin filth and foolishness; and He will raise you from the spiritual death that you languish in as He rsised Lazarus from the dead by the Power of His Divinity so that after your death you can go and enjoy eternal Life with Our Lord and God Jesus Christ.

Nicely done, Mike! Always great to find old film, whether "moving pictures", or just photos. A vintage stash is a wonderful treasure...
