A good friend of mine W. Pulcini managed to get William Clarke to come play in our small town of Las Vegas NM way back around 1992. It’s amazing the big sound William gets on his harmonica. Great blues. As it turns out William is Wayne’s brother in law.
In addition to Bill, the players were John Marx on guitar, myself on a grand piano that hid me from the camera, Willie Brinlee on bass and Lee Smith on drums. The festival headliner was B.B. King and we got to attend his 66th birthday party backstage after the show.
@@jimnealwines Thanks for the comment. There's a few more songs posted from the same show (identifiable by Bill's blue suit). Here's a good one with almost the same band (different drummer) that has more piano. - SF th-cam.com/video/KZV5nAyKG_E/w-d-xo.html
@@Steve_Fdor Thank you so much Steve, for writing and for sharing the link. Your playing is so tasteful, so subtle and understated. Bill is the front man sure, but your foundation and the groove of the rhythm section is what makes the music click. My friend Rob Rio turned me on to Bill in the mid 80s when we were at the Long Beach Blues Fest, we went to see him play at a bar and maybe you were playing with him. Blew my mind. I love blues and boogie piano, I hope you’re doing well and still playing. Thanks again!
@@jimnealwines Thanks for the kind words. Rob Rio is a friend and we've even done some piano duets together. I started playing with Bill around 1980, but was only a regular on his gigs for about a year from 1987 to 1988, so I might not have been on the bar gig you mention. I did play on the Long Beach festival in 1985 with Otis Rush, so perhaps that was the one you attended?
Saw him at one of his last live shows… the original HOB in Cambridge MA, when the HOB still cared ( allegedly) about blues. Clarke was in poor health had to sit most of the night but blew great harp - through a 60’s brown Fender concert AND a super reverb ! You could hear him from across the Charles River!
Good news - Charlie is very much alive! Alas, I wish I could say the same for William Clarke, James Harman, Paul deLay, and other masters of the instrument who have passed on
Yo I saw Sherman many times in the 80's at the American Hotel in Vancouver. I don't think I ever played with him or even talked with him much- great singer and harp player. I hear he's up in Kelowna now?
I saw W.C. at the Wild Blue Yonder, Zapps Park Lounge, and The Spaghetti Factory, Fresno CA. Late 80's early 90's. Inspired my own harp playing. Thanks to Jesus Christ, I survived it.
Lo mejor de lo mejor, pero antes también hubo muy buenos .La harmónica es sentimiento y ritmo .Se nos fue temprano el Willi, pero sigue en nosotros los harmonicista.Viva la vida Williams como solo tú la interpretadas!!!
mxm190: You mean he plays standing on his head? But seriously folks, unless the film is reversed, he is indeed playing "upside-down". The standard way to play a harmonica is with the low notes to the player's left, which is not what we are seeing i.e. the low end of the harp is on "our" left, which is his right.
Just came out and layed it on 'em! Doesn't get any better!

I was at the festival that day. I remember Rory Block came on right after your set and said: "How am I going to follow that?!!"
In VERY loving memory of Mr. William Joseph Clarke (1951 - 1996 R.I.P. // Gone but NOT forgotten).

anyone realize he played his harmonica up side down?
not til now!
you are thinking about paul butterfield...i knew bill and he did not play upside down
matthew rediker either you didn't know him or you didn't know he played it upside down. It's well documented and visible in this performance.
