I was introduced to the Nunchaku ("num-chucks") in 1982 by some friends when I was in high school... Oh ya, I know all about clipping the inner elbow a few times (funny bone), and good god did it burn like hell... That teaches you to be very careful when twirling them fast.
I got pretty good and then started training on using 2 chucks, but then as my life changed over time, I slowly moved away from using them so much to the point I could go years without using them, however, when I do pick them up, it all comes back to me.
I use oak wood (12-inch octagon shape) with a 4-inch chain.
I still have the same wooden chucks from 1982 hanging on my wall, and I spray WD-40 on the chain & ball-berrings once a year.

Great videos, I been practicing for a couple months now. I tore ligaments in my foot and needed surgery so I can barely walk, so I picked a pair of nunchucks and been practicing.I been watching all your videos but I was then to go too fast. So I been on your beginner video and been doing my best to learn correctly and not put the carriage before the horse. And I have made immense progress, so thank you. You're a great teacher and I really appreciate you taking your time to inspire and help people and me especially. Thank you again

@@JupiterLance well you just roll up two magazines to about 4 cm diameter and the lenght of your forearm. Than you connect the two with flexible rope, about 8 cm long, but that is personal preference.

Nice flow brother. Just had one question for you. Why do you swing upward when doing a wrist roll when its so much easier to do a wrist roll if you swing down instead of up? Instead of swinging up just take the other hand and let go, let the chain swing around the hand. Your way, your fighting gravity. Doing both ways is best. Opens you up to more transitions

I've been spinning off and on for a few years; recently started back up, as a method for staving off the fumbly-fingered-ness that seems to be trying to set in. I can play banjo, fiddle, fife, flute, etc., but I lately keep dropping things (I'm diabetic, in my early 50s, and already have a degree of neuropathy in my toes, so it's a concern). I'm already seeing improvement in my dexterity, though I haven't tried the more complicated tossing and catching moves again yet. My fave chucks are a set of steel telescopic collapsing chain-and-swivel, a big, heavy hardwood chain-and-swivel, and a homemade set that closely resembles prochux (though not as well-made, of course).

Hey dude ur a bloody inspiration mate. Thought I was pretty competent until I saw ur spinning. Practicing for my 1st Dan demo in karate. I can tell right now from your videos I'm gonna blow them away. How important is chain length when spinning? I'm working with a 5 chain speed chuck not padded. Doesn't quiet reach right over the back of my hand. Should I be looking for a longer chain? Ta Rob from Australia

Ken I've just started with wooden nunchucks. I'm 5 days & heavily into practicing. Not to drop names but I started with Edward Pizzo's beginning nunchuck tutorial! With is Awesome! Your tutorials are off the hook! So! When should I start the wrist roll? Should I give myself another week? Gave it a try and not happen. Still having issues with right arm catch. Left arm catch have it down and that's the weak arm. Also the left under arm & back arm bounce I keep acting as if I'm gonna take a punch lol

  • @rgreigjazzguitar

Great learning tool and thanks for this incredible resource. Quick question: will these techniques be very easy/transferable with a filipino or bruce lee style nunchuck with a longer chain or rope (an 11 link chain nunchuck)? My one concern would be if the longer chain would be harder with the wrist roles. I watched the whole video from start to finish and it is really great. You provide so many great techniques that lead to a strong foundation and good flow. I'm going to have to take this in for awhile and practice it to really get good at it before even moving to the next lesson. Thanks again for this great resource!

    +ken hill
Hi Ken, first of all, I would like to thank you for the awesome lessons that you have put up!
I am practicing with wooden nunchakus which have 11 links. My question is regarding the wrist roll. Does the wrist roll depend on how many links there are in the chaku? I am asking this because I tried doing the wrist roll without reaching for the chaku as you have instructed, but I always catch the part linking the chain and the wood in the process. I reckon this difference is because you are using a chain with lesser number of links. Am I correct? I have tried checking for the balancing point and all, but it's not working.
    Thanks,
    Abhijit.
