    For years I've been upgrading Corel Painter (last one I upgraded was the 2019 version) but mostly stopped using it in recent years because of the performance issue. Based on your review, I upgraded to the latest 2021 and am very happy to see that performance is significantly better. Corel's headquarters are in Ottawa, Canada, which is where I live, and I have a couple of friends that worked at Corel a number of years ago. I think it's great to support companies like this (who've had their ups and downs over the years). And it's great to see that they have improved their tool so that performance (for me anyway) doesn't look like it's an issue anymore. I'm using an old MacBook Pro 2015 and oddly enough, it has AVX2. So thanks for the review.

      This is what I've been doing for years, supporting this company. This year it stung to see them nearly double upgrade cost and offer a subscription to keep the software updated which they should be doing anyhow. They raised brush pack prices while making them in app purchases only and most of what this version does is improve thick paint and media compatibility as long as you understand how and made it better to use with iOS. I do love this program but suspect this will be my last upgrade at this pricing.

    This looks really really good! I also love artrage. Their brush engines are pretty darn good too, though maybe not at this level... but I'm just an enthusiast.
    Sinix is great too! The way he handles brushstrokes is very impressive, and his "Paint like a sculptor" style is very effective.

    I'm really curious how you'd view the new RGBA brushes in Krita 4.3.0. Difference between them and normal brushes are that it doesn't just use just greyscale in the brush tip, but both alpha and greyscale, alpha for transparency and greyscale for Value, which means you get lighter and darker tones in the brush stroke no matter which color you choose, so it creates this oil painting look without heavy fluid calculations. It's under a pretty heavy development, some features are already there, there are even more waiting - mapping to custom gradients, color smudge engine (the first one was for pixel engine, I believe), mapping textures to Value or custom gradients, and some other fancy features like that.
    Also, AVX2 is probably really a great help in performance. Krita uses it too (although don't mark brushes that use it like that :P ). Afaik that's one of the things that make the older processors with higher specifications slower than newer ones with seemingly lesser specification. Age apparently matters, too :)
    Krita has the Bristle engine (and a few more) too... it just sucks completely. It would need to be heavily improved before it's useful...
    Also, I wonder, would you give Krita an updated review if I gave you a link to download it? :P

I managed to create some passable custom brushes by watching your old tutorial on how to create brushes in Photoshop, but Corel has a lot more options, so I'm sure they could be better with your guidance. hey hello ive been using painter since x3, when brush resizie was super snappy, but since 2015 it became super slow, ive upgrages to 2021 and it better but still fells laggy compared to x3, can the programmers sort that thing out? it has many complaint over the years and nothing, note that i use it for professional fantasy illustration so we need more quickness on the size and picking colors, so i believe the programmers focused too much on the artist way of painting whic is more slow and metodical, but left the illustrator on the side :(

    • @LionArtStudio
      @LionArtStudio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      jorge fares yep I hear you, & I agree needs more work. I’m pushing for things professionals need (I’m a working illustrator), clipping masks, new layer modes like add, a dedicated warp tool..... I’m hoping there will be more work on these things in near future. Performance has improved overall, which is great....but there’s some things like brush resizing that need work. I started using Painter with IX and remember how it frequently crashed, but it is much more stable since 2018-2020 and when I crashed several times with 2021 I thought uhh oh. Then I realized it was a problem between the Cintiq 16 I'm now using instead of the old 21UX with built in side buttons and the add on Cintiq remote when using specific buttons/commands. I was relieved it wasn't Painter but Wacom's buggy drivers. What I keep harping on at webinars and to Karen Bonaker about are the Painter watercolor brushes not responding or looking as natural as those in Rebelle3. Other than this I'd love it if Corel added a dedicated history panel like Photoshop (or better) so if I do not like the way something is turning out I can quickly and easily undo to a point where I did and continue rather than clicking 100 undos/redos to find the right restore point.

    • @jonnyBgood3
      @jonnyBgood3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I finally decided to get painter after years of skipping because of performance and interface issues, much improved but infuriating that many brushes do not work with pen tilt and some don't even have a angle slider which would have helped a bit. There is still a long way to go for people who like traditional media, a proper watercolour engine like rebelle 4 which now has oils with fluid dynamics for instance. There is lots of things I love about the program but I would never have paid the full price as it just too expensive for me even without all the issues.I may upgrade if I see some excellent improvements going forward but the upgrades cost as much if not more than some stand alone programs so there has to be big leaps in features and not just endless brush packs. Core functionality and natural media tools for me.

    • @FreeSpokenOne
      @FreeSpokenOne 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jonnyBgood3 Much of what you said I’ve thought myself after using Painter since IX version. The difference from then to now are like day and night and yet it still is hard to navigate and like you if I use Procreate or Rebelle, Krita, any other app the location of features are easy to forget and need to re-learn. The older one gets, the harder this is too although it does keep the brain moving. For using physical media, even a project away from using Painter has memory impact. There are features in Photoshop I’d love to see Painter adopt, like history panel and color matching or how well Rebelle does watercolor even if that could use a better way to direct pigment flow like brush rotation/tilt. Most importantly Painter needs to allow us to set a shorter preferred auto backup so we don’t loose work if the app crashes which I’ve found issues with when using the Wacom Express Key remote from time to time. The hardest part of Painter is for me setting everything up to my workflow. This takes time and a lot of patience. There are ways to shortcut and automate frequently used actions once you know what you want and that’s another hurdle. Figuring out what exactly you want to do and how to get there. Many times I’ve thought, why isn’t there a fully inclusive listing of all the possibilities and matching command list somewhere?! Digging up the right command to do a thing can be a chore. For all I know there is one but I’ve not yet found it.

    Corel Painter definitely takes some getting used to and learning. You can't just go into it expecting it to be like every other drawing app. It's clunky at times, but man, I used to paint traditional acryl, oil and various other a lot, then moved to photoshop because it's just easier in an apartment and less messy. Corel Painter felt way more like home once I got over the initial "how the fuck am I supposed to use this program?". Helps I got it on a humble bundle sale too, so the price didn't feel as intimidating.

      You know you can skip versions and still be able to use the upgrade version. I went from Painter 10 to 2016(found the upgrade version on discount at a closing Office Depot). That skipped like 5 versions. I contacted Corel beforehand to make sure it would work. According to them, as long as you have a valid serial from any previous versions it can be used for any upgrade version of that same line. I think that also applies to all of their other software lines as well(though I would check with them on that).
      The more recent versions of Painter have had very little improvements so I decided it wasn't worth the upgrade. I did end up getting 2019 just because is was offered for $30 as part of a Humble bundle art package with other software, but I wouldn't have upgraded to 2019 if it wasn't so cheap.
      The 2016 version was however is definitely worth it the upgrade( even if i didn't get it for cheap). It introduced the new particle brush engine which I feel is a game changer. With those brushes it moves each hair of the brush independently so every brush stroke is different, like a real brush(and other media as well). The new particle brush engine is also available by itself in a standalone version as well as a Photoshop plugin called Particle Shop. The 2020 version might be good for someone who has a slower computer as it is supposed to be faster, but since I don't have that issue I didn't upgrade to 2020. I will not be getting the 2021 upgrade unless I find it dirt cheap. As long as they keep this same upgrade policy I don't mind the useless upgrade cycles as I will just skip the ones that aren't worth the money they are asking.
      FYI: Painter still , however ,has a lot of the same bugs and issues, dating all the way back from when I started using Painter in the 90's.

    I enjoyed your review as it came from the POV of someone who understands art software but hasn't used Corel Painter long enough to notice the huge changes and improvements in the UI and brush engine. The Sinix portrait came out pretty nice too I should add. My start was with Photoshop which Corel Painter soon surpassed being as my dream was for a more painterly look. I supplement it with Rebelle3 for watercolor being more natural plus popular iOS and Android apps like Procreate, Artrage, or Painter (different dev than Corel), among others. I remember when there were no apps like this on the market and so am grateful to have these tools to be creative with. Their upgrade pricing still is too much for many all the same so it'll be up to Corel to decide if it wants to alienate non professional artists from using their software much like Adobe Photoshop has.

    For those who are afraid to dive into a new program... I think a big issue people have is they look at the program or app as a whole, trying to use it as someone with years of experience would use it. Once the individual just simply opens a canvas, pick a brush, and paints... over time you'll pick up the extra stuff. How many of us actually use the whole program or in other words all of the features? Most likely no one.

    Very expressive painting . You should try to redo it with acrylics or oils . I love corel painter it's one of my favorite art software and i use it all the time. it's far smoother than in the past but it's still less optimized than Photoshop and it rely too much on the CPU with some brushes . It's something that i don't understand at all . Right now is the best Painting software i ever tried but like you said it lack filters , plugin , photomanipulation tools and a lot of other stuff that you find on photoshop and in other art software than for some stuff you need to swap software unluckily .

    I've been back and forth between getting corel or sticking with PS. I watch a lot of sinix and he performs so well on this program, especially with the blending capacity. But the main reason I want to move away from photoshop is because of the monthly subscription, and corel is nice because you buy it once, BUT they come out with a new version every year/other year, and it costs $200+ to upgrade, so you're essentially spending more money for a product that is not industry standard. That's my 2 cents, and I'll just keep letting adobe leech from my bank account.

    guys, if you have the recent amd cpus, ur good. mine works really well. 32 gb ram, 3900x cpu and a 2070 super gpu, you dont need to worry about anything. you dont even need a system like mine the cpu could be a tier down but like i think this is the spot for a very good build without spending too much. Its also great for music production.
    Anyway ya just make sure to make sure if the cpu can support AVX2.

    Can beat Corel Painter Krita which is completely free.?

    • @BoroCG
      @BoroCG  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Comes down to what's more important to you. The price, or the performance. I can't really work in Krita, despite how much I love that project. Too much lag on decent canvas sizes (even with Instant Preview mode), plus very poor selection of texture modes in the brush engine.

    Krita has 6 or 7 engines and all parameters are available at all times, so much easier. Didn't see any brush marks I couldn't get with Krita and brush adjustments. Will no on rid us of this and the other dinosaur known as Photoshop with their ancient algorithms?

    I have corel 2020 and I just struggle with the fact that the tranform tool is seperated from the rotation and scale. I love over apps where they are all selectable within the wone selection tool.

    fun story: tried Corel Painter 2020 and loved it more than i wanted to (it really takes a bit getting used to but the customization of the brushes is such a great thing for me, because if you understand it you can tweak stuff for your exact liking). So trial is up and I, er, had trouble getting the full version financially.
    I also run Windows primarily and MacOS sometimes and wanted to know whether the license would be for both (my old X12 was).
    Turns out, no. But during my talk with the patient Indian support guy, he was mentioning the educational license for like 80 bucks that IS for both systems. And I was like "yea but i'm not a student anymore" and he goes "yeah but if you have any family member…" nudge nudge wink wink.
    And this is how I accidentally scammed Corel into giving me an educational full license to Corel 2021. Talking to people works wonders sometimes.

      I know what you mean. I'm still a student as well. I always wanted to have Painter, especially after trying out the trial, but it was always way too expensive to me, but! There's this great site that does bundles for games and all. That's what I use the site for, but apparently they do books and software bundles too, and currently they have a bundle with Painter 2020 in it!
      It's not the 2021 version, but it's 2020 for only 25,43 euro. It's a no brainer for me. I came here to see what the difference between the two versions is and I'm not seeing any significant changes at all so I'm definitely going to buy it. The bundle comes with some nice bonuses besides Painter too but I admit that I'm totally buying it for Painter lol

    I'm guessing AVX2 is really important....my CPU has it and I don't get any of that lag on those types of brushes. Yet my performance assessment when I start the app says only 15x, so I'm guessing he has a much faster GPU than me. But as he says, I think his CPU is the bottleneck. You don't need a super-fast GPU (I only have a Radeon RX560).

    I was given the chance of buying 2020 for £80 but a decent watercolor engine is lacking in Painter, so I skipped, there is things I really like about the program but when I had previous versions the glitchiness of it always crashing and awful interface/performance, nevermind the price always put me off, it's looking much better but I will buy Rebelle 3 for the watercolours and wait until and if they improve other features I want.

    Painter needs a Stylus Eraser Toggle you cant toggle back in fourth Tools at all this is a Big Problem nearly every Software can do this Today. Also you cant Pan with the Middle mouse click? Its not a Deal Breaker but for a Painting Software that just happens to be the most expensive you would think these features would already exist in the Software?
