    Great idea with the pin and set screw, is wonderful that you pass the knowledge to your kit, is very recursive, 👌💯❌💯

    Finally someone that understands surface prep and is doing the painting the proper way. So many ignore a clean surface and priming because that takes too much time and money. But the surface prep IS the key to a quality finish of anything, if you want it to both look good and last. Thumbs Up!

    Ya know , for starting out behind the 8 ball, y’all got a lot done. I knew an older fella years ago who was a “body man” when I said how good it turned out he said yep, 90% prep and 10% paint. Last year when I rebuilt my 46 Gibson I recalled his words . Good to see a Son and his Dad doing a quality restoration job and enjoying it 👍

    You guys sure do nice work, that is going to be one nice M. You guys probably know this old trick, a little dab of valve grinding compound on a stripped phillips head or slotted head screw will usually get a grip and you back the screw right out. It works better than you think it would!

  • @Ham68229

    One thing I learned a long time ago, remove the grease zerks and install pipe plugs. Paint over the grease zerks then you have a stuck ball valve on those zerks. As for the PTO shaft, you're right, don't paint them but, slobber them with grease. That alone protects them. You're getting closer to getting the old "M" up and running. Great video, cheers :)

    Your transmission top cover is showing signs of casting "cold shuts" where the iron was just a fraction too cold to flow fully round the chaplets ( discs ) and melt them into the casting. Chaplets are used to hold a core or section at a given distance or cross section - just mild steel. Normally they would melt in and vanish. You can probably see the marks from a few more on the same surface where they worked correctly.

      @@squatch253 Your attention to detail in the prep work will definitely pay dividends, in appearance and longevity. Your point on the material choice is certainly understood, in fact I made the same choice on the tractors I have painted. That being said, I've seen my share of very poorly executed paint jobs with high-dollar materials. They look very nice from afar but are far from nice up close. Anyway, looking forward to the next installment!

    For what it is worth I've never had an issue with paint adhesion on seeping cast. Spend some time with wax and grease remover to get the surface free of oil. Spray problem areas with JD buff primer immediately after. Yes I use JD primer on everything. I don't know exactly what JD does with their paints and primers but it is very high quality. Blitz black on axles and splines is pretty sexy against IH red, and it is some seriously tough paint.

    • @ShainAndrews
      @ShainAndrews 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@squatch253 I've slid hubs over blitz black and you would think I painted the axles after the hub install. I operate identical to you guys so I feel confident you would get the same result. I do add Valspar hardener to Blitz Black (I add it to all JD paint). I used to paint professionally and I couldn't tell you what that hardener does because it is not like a typical two part paint system (ie it won't kick off in your gun or paint can). With JD paint it does allow the paint to flow out a bit longer and does improve color retention and resists chips a bit better. I tested the hardener with IH, and MM paint and could not determine any benefit.

    You put that 1/2 pully on the crank, if you're going to be using that tractor for equipment that should have live hydraulic, such as a loader, the crank is a good place to put on a sprocket to mount a hydraulic pump on the outside of the frame rail. Neither belly pump nor pto is not good place to use for hydraulic to power a loader.

      Hey Dale, I have a lot of projects in progress but not finished myself. Want to come over and talk about it in person? I’ll give you the short version here.
      I work on whatever I feel like working on. Period. It’s my life and I enjoy it in my own way. I prefer the variety and enjoy working on many things at once. People like you love to drop by and tell me what I will and won’t ever finish. Frankly, I could not possibly care less what gets finished, because it’s the work that interests me, not the finished product.
      I have a good friend who is just the opposite. He starts something, then is driven to finish it to perfection. After he finishes, he is restless and bored. He can’t work on his project again because it’s perfect. He can’t start another major project because his shop is perfect and he can’t stand having it dirty again with the finished project housed there. That’s how he likes it and it’s none of my business.
      I prefer to get up each day and have a big menu of things to do. Today, my choices are working on a big shop fan I was given, a band saw I’m rebuilding, cutting gears, fixing a window lift motor, working on my power hammer, evaluating an RF power amplifier, repairing a transmitter, modifying a subwoofer. Those are the active projects today.
      Over the winter I too have a Super M engine rebuild to do, should overhaul my Cub, will work on my telephone switch, might install an antenna tower, wire up a switchboard, might even begin a VW engine rebuild. I’m sure I’ll interrupt all of that to slab a fallen tree and do a little forging.
      I sense that Squatch is driven more by need, since he uses his machines more than I do. He’s also busy with work. It’s tough to do major rebuilds on top of a full time job. TH-cam summaries make it look like fast work. It’s certainly not. These guys have my respect for all they accomplish.
      So yeah, guys like us NEVER finish anything we start. SO WHAT?
