yes, just as Martinanjung said. It's only a shift on the fly because there is no clutch. The teeth in the gear box won't line up and mesh correctly unless the motor is running.
The server arm needs to be rotated one or two teeth further around, going clockwise. It needs to finish at a bit past 9 o'clock so it can lock in.
I ditched the 2 speed for an aluminum case single speed 370 motor transmission.
It has to be moving for the servo to engage correctly. I recommend EdwardRC Car. He works for WPL and is a great friend and a great guy. He covers so many of the issues encountered in a build. 🙂
I turned it into a shelf queen. Gave my son some of the hood parts for his. One of these days he’ll build his on the channel
@@IowaBudgetRCBashers Excellent! IMHO, you are very fortunate, sir. Right now, I'm using my stock RES-3 ESC to control my Surpass hobby 2430 brushes setup. 2 batteries. One for the RES-3 board and one for the Surpass hobby motor and ESC. I'm gonna post the video on my channel if you get bored and want to check it out 🙂
I assembled one of those WPL's with a two speed gearbox, as I remember it, it worked alright, servo-wise. But when it's mounted to the chassis, on mine there was a lot of flex, so I needed to stiffen it, I think I jammed in some washers to make it more rigid.
Cool to follow, even if you're frustrated. And now onto newest episode!
Run that RC stuffed a piece of high density foam next to the servo to stop flex. I’ll probably try that. Sadly as you saw in my latest video the shift shaft hits the links. More issues to figure out lol
I’d definitely try hooking the motor up first to see if it engages. If not I’d try a servo with a higher kg.👍😊
That’s what I’m gonna do. And if I can’t get it to work, what’s another 23 bucks for the aluminum single speed right🤷♂️ probably should’ve done that in the first place, cause I know they’re good and reliable, but the hi low thing just seems cool

Wow I was thinking about buying one to start building so I need to take notes on your build.
They’re fun, and easy to customize. Probably gonna get another and build it stock, and Grayson wants to build one himself which will be good for him to learn.

@@UrbanLegendRC yes Amazon is definitely the place to get em when they’re on sale. The rtr’s don’t have proportional steering but are easily upgraded. All the custom parts are available on Amazon too
@@IowaBudgetRCBashers Do you have any extra amoril wheel spacers I lost my package at the park trying to repair the buggy and truggy. Now I only have 3 🤣 and Amazon only has the purple set.

That, I'm not experienced with WPL... but I know crappy micro Servos!!
Go shopping for a "9 gram" RC Aircraft Servo, with metal gears. It WON'T drag anymore, and are much more reliable!
I can't imagine what you're putting those wheels and tires on, but I'd love a set for my SCX-24. 😉😁

It’s supposed to be a 9 gram servo but it’s all plastic gears. The steering servo is a much better metal servo. Think I’ll solder the motor wires and see if it’s fully engaging or not. Looking forward to the video 😎
@@IowaBudgetRCBashers Yeah... one thing I know I don't have to tell you is, not all servos are created equal!! 😲🙄
Aircraft grade Servos HAVE to be built to a standard. Obviously because an out of control plane can hurt someone!! Good news, they're fairly cheap! 😎

Thad, if not, I MAY have a spare quality Aircraft Servo. I can't remember if it's 9 or 12 gram. 🤔
If it's 12g, you may be able to use it for steering, and your steering Servo for the trans...
The gear change should be done while the motor is running...

It took me forever to get mine running properly.
Idk if you know this already, the single speed 370 can be run on 3s. It solves some wheel speed problems it has on 2s.
I have the landrover version. Using the alloy case 370 and mn98 portal axles on mine. It’s an absolute beast.
The mn98 portals really made the truck. It took some customizing but worth it. Good luck with the build!

If it were easy....everyone would be modifying R/C trucks...
Very true my friend. These are like our real project vehicles trial and error.
