Iain Tyrrell from "Tyrrell's Classic's" use a piece of rubber hose to his ear when he's adjusting carburettors. It keeps out other sounds from the enviroment.

Correct, and it’s easier to monitor faults by aiming a temp laser gun at the downpipes at various throttle openings so you don’t have to shove sharp objects down your carbs. Unfortunately having stacks means the tiniest spec of dirt blocks up the pilot circuit.
