Im from the UK and watched all of you tutorials you haven't left a stone unturned regarding anyrail good luck with your new track plan and the amount of work even before you start ................tony
Tony, Thank you! I was staring at the future railroad room the other day and wondering if I could do better on the design. Gotta lock the design in before I go crazy. Take care, dave
Hi Derek, I am conflicted about the helix and a second level, but for right now, I just don't want to block the window and I feel the helix would just take up too much room. If the room I was putting the railroad in was about three feet longer or a couple of feet wider, I might do it. As for AnyRail, I don't know if David knows about the Walthers problem I found. I think he watches the videos because he said he liked them but beyond that, I don't haven't had any communication with him. When you get your turnouts, if you can, take a moment and try the experiment like I did where I printed them out and laid the actual turnout on the print. Let me know if you see a problem as well. I mentioned in the video that I was pretty sure there actually was a problem, but it would be nice to have confirmation from another source. I haven't progressed far enough in DCC to be able to recommend anything for JMRI. I do all of my design on a HP Pavillion desktop with a Intel i7-8700 6 core running at 3.2 GHz, 16 GB of memory and a GE Force GTX-1050TI video card with 4GB. Not a great video card but it suffices for design and video editing. I also have a HP Laptop AMD A6-9225 Radeon R4 with 5 Cores running at 2.6 GHz and 4 GB of memory and it handles CAD and AnyRail just fine. I do all of my design work though on my desktop. I would imagine anything running a i5 or above, running at 2GHz and above would be fine. As for memory, I have always felt more is the way to go as long as you don't blow your budget. But when it comes to recommendations, I like to say 'your mileage may vary'. The scenery video is still in my head. I've played around with a couple of things but haven't done an outline on the video yet. I am turning my attention to cleaning out the railroad room and figuring out carpet for it. Also need to climb in the attic and put in the lighting. That's more fun than a human should be allowed to have. Dave
@@steampoweredradio2981 Thank you for the reply. As usual, your response and your tutorials are always helpful. Hopefully you can do LED pot lights and do most of the work from inside the room. I’ve only had 2 serious layouts beside the plywood ones but I have never had a DCC layout or scenery so I’m looking forward to your scenery videos and when you get done with Anyrail maybe you can do a new tutorial series for Digitrax Dcc duplex for us. Lol.
Reference the layout, you stated that if the room were 3 feet longer you might consider the helix, and your room is actually 4 feet longer than what you have dedicated to the layout. If you can go above the record,cd,dvd cabinet or move it you would gain 4 feet on the top right corner. If you do one level you might be able to do a folded dog bone with two return loops, one in that corner and the second to the left of the entry door. The second return loop may have to be moved about 3 feet away from the door to allow for enough aisle width between the two loops and it wouldn’t block the window. I am not pushing for a helix because I do not like them but you mentioned a possible second level and you could put a helix in the top right corner if you wanted to. It’s your railroad and I’m sure you will do a wonderful job and I hope that you know I’m only trying to suggest a possible alternative plan to consider. Thank you for your help.
@@derekalexander4030 Hi Derek, I have no problem with people offering suggestions or help, that's how we all learn in this hobby or anything for that matter. I kicked around the idea of the second level but it just doesn't seem to work out right now. That area where the Record/CD/DVD cabinet is only 31 inches from the wall to the closet. Also, the cabinet is about 62 inches high and I don't have another location in the house I want to put it. That being said, I am not married to the current plan yet and I might fool around with other designs. I haven't built a railroad in over 20 years and I am hesitant to get too complicated with this one. At age 66 I feel I might have a railroad or two left in me for the future. I have a bunch of nice can type LED lights for the room but my son-in-law, who is an electrician, has been telling me about some new LED lights that are thin enough that they can be placed under a rafter. He said, I believe, that I can also get them in color changing models. I want the color changing so I can simulate morning and evening if I want. That would be cool! I'll have to see how much I get into the ins and outs of DCC. There are a lot of channels out there that cover the subject already. That's for the future though. I want to start doing some videos on restoring some of my old audio consoles and broadcast equipment. I am currently outlining videos for those as well as future AnyRail stuff. I am not quite sure where I want to go with the AnyRail videos. I guess a video about printing might be helpful and I want to do one about how to make benchwork but, there are a lot more deep dive type videos into the program that I could do, but I am not sure how useful they would be. As I have said in the past, this is a program most people will buy, learn to use the basics quickly and then not use it again after the design is done. I am also trying to get all of my notes together to maybe do a handbook on the subject, we'll see how far I get with that project. I might do another video asking for ideas. I know people have to have questions about things I have not covered. Scenery video probably in about 3 weeks. Good luck with your railroad and let me know how it goes. Dave

looks good , appreciate all the time you put in doing these updates. rgds from Australia.
Craig, Thank you and greetings from sunny Northern California! I appreciate the kind comments. Take care, Dave
I think that’s a better layout but you may want to revisit the helix idea so you can have the second level. I can’t wait to se the scenery video.
