Impressive video. I started a bit late (graduated from my doctorate program at age 30 in 2016 with 170k in school loan debt). Managed to pay off my debt by 2019 and currently have a house and 250k total in investments (combo of profit share, 401k and a brokerage account). I'm not very knowledgeable in investing, so I just have my investing currently in index funds mainly voo, but have been putting a lot into schd the past few months. I dunno if that's the optimal strategy, but psychologically it is very set it and forget it, and prevents me from obsessing over individual stock performance.
@@michaelnoah3503 Instead of using different brokerage accounts to purchase index funds or individual stock, compare your age(s) and how much time you have estimated till retirement, you can also opt to consulting/working with a fund manager/advisor for an “optimal strategy” to outperform the bear market.

Another great indicator backtest for market bottoms is William J O'Neils "Follow through day." If all 3 of the Major Indices DIA, QQQ, and SPY all close with a gain of roughly 1.7%+ with higher volume than the previous day on the 7th-12th day from a new market bottom then you can begin trading in the market direction. Stop loss can be set at the market bottom or nearest supporting MA

After learning about Kathy's NVDA selling error, I don't feel so bad about my own buying, holding, and selling pattern, executed at the worst possible time -- on TSLA right before it skyrocketed -- because: 1) I lost a fraction of a percent compared to Kathy's loss, and 2) I'm only losing my money and nobody else's.
it's so hard to stay with a strategy consistently for a longer amount of time. we are watching these videos which means we are interested in the markets and strategies. so when we are watching new videos, we are discovering new strategies constantly and likely disregarding old ones..

That starting piece about Ark reminds me of something I read somewhere, that in a bull market all the overly bullish managers end up managing most of the money, and when the market turns they tend to stay overly bullish for to long compared to those who deploy more steady market neutral strategies.
Thanks Gareth. Yes, Cathie Wood is something of an enigma. Her risk management is not good! Some of her calls are bizarre - she was predicting $500K for bitcoin, shortly before it plummeted to $15K. And the ARK innovations make Neil Woodford look pretty smart. Your approach is infinitely better.

Thanks Jay - Not sure where that is, 50% in one day is colossal and certainly not something I would consider i.e. its moved 50% away from any structure to place a stop loss which is waaay to high.

Your equity chart shows that you had a down period during Covid. Why didn't you just short the market once shutdowns began? Or if you don't short, why not buy inverse ETFs? I don't understand why people struggle during bear markets.
Most trading platforms have 'studies' that can be added to the chart of a stock. TD Ameritrade has ThinkorSwim, Charles Schwab has StreetSmart Edge. Both of these allow you to add moving averages to a chart.
There are two big problems here. One is that often you will close your position when the trade turns against you and then miss out on potential gains when it continues the prior trend. There’s no way of knowing when or how frequently this will occur. The second problem is that even if you close the position at the right time you will pay lots of taxes on your gains if you had a large position and a large gain. Your losses from the taxes may exceed the amount you saved by closing the position.

You lost a subscriber because of your Cathy Wood comments. First of all, she bought NVDA in 2014 before most people had even heard of it at $5 a share and rode it up something like 600%, then she reallocated those funds into other stocks, and missed the last 100% gain. She’s a brilliant investor, too bad you’re hating on her. At any rate, makes me question your judgement.

logarithmic can be useful when looking at a longer historic timeframe, like 10+ years. Otherwise a regular is fine.

Easy in hindsight. Downturns are rapid and don't always materialise into downturns, you just remember the ones that did...
I wonder how to find any online chart that shows the 10 & 20 EMA? I search the yahoo and google stock chart couldn't find any.
