- This is an early review of LEGO Ninjago set 71796 Elemental Dragon vs. The Empress Mech! This set officially releases on June 1st, 2023 as a part of the Ninjago: Dragons Rising wave, and contains 6 minifigures: Dragons Rising Jay, Dragons Rising Zane, Sora, Empress Beatrix, Lord Ras, and an Imperium Guard, as well as Baby Riyu, the baby dragon!

Ninja fans aged 9+ can recreate an epic showdown from the NINJAGO® Dragons Rising TV series with Elemental Dragon vs. The Empress Mech (71796). The building set features fearsome dragon Jiro, who can be upgraded by adding golden blade wings and stud shooters from a flyer vehicle to take on the Empress’s posable golden mech, who is wielding a large sword.
Premium toy for kids
The impressive playset includes 6 minifigures. Jay, Sora and Zane each come with 2 golden katanas to defeat the trio of Lord Ras with his hammer, Empress Beatrix with her Imperium sword and an Imperium Guard with a staff. I think there’s a reason they included Sora and Riyu in the set. I think they are included for the sake of the combination feature making sense. Basically, Riyu empowers Sora to use her powers to separate the parts of Jay’s vehicle to use as armor and weapons for the dragon

I think this is the best set of the wave, not only does it come with quite a lot of pieces but it's just a good play set.
To have builds for both sides in the same set is a rarity, let alone to this extent.
Definitely one of the best sets they've come out with in a while.
Yeah I also think Dragons Rising has some of the best sets in recent years
The dragon just SLAPS by itself, it's probably one of the best dragons I've seen from Ninjago and while the wings are not cloth, I understand the choice (the pointy bits would have flopped downward), and the mech just brings out some hardcore 2023 Exo-Force vibes
Honestly this set looks well worth the price. Not only do we get a massively impressive massive dragon, but a very decent Mech and side build that could exist as sets on their own, but are very nicely bundled with the dragon

This really feels like one of the Ancient Dragons from Farum Azula in Elden Ring. Something about the very jagged shape of the face, the general bodyshape/stance and the four limbs, lightning-bolts and huge wings just feel so similar, and it's made me wonder if the designers were inspired somewhat by them :)

Even though this set costs $130 USD I really like it and considering how good the set is and that it’s the only set from the wave I plan on picking up, I don’t mind the price that much.
I gotta say, the price actually doesn't look as bad as I thought. $130 is still far from good, but $110-$120 wouldn't actually be half bad. I think that just speaks to how great a set this is.

Chima will probably return or something like that because Ras is not the only anthropomorphic amimal. In the trailers you can see a humanoid frog or lizard
Awesome set but probably won't buy it until its like 100€ or 90€
This is hands down the best lightning dragon we’ve ever gotten. The mech is nice too, but I feel like they could’ve done more for the villains in this wave other than just side builds and one twenty dollar set. Amazing set, I might pick it up if I wasn’t gonna be broke after purchasing Ninjago City Markets.
ninjago rarely does bipedal dragons these days, so this one is quite nice and unique

I love the mech!! Looks very steampunky! The villains are once again slaying their designs!!!
Id say its dieselpunk (dark, industrial/pipe, decopunk lines) mixed with a little cyberpunk (lights, techblade) and steampunk (gold), very cool

They are well designed and the mech has better legs than the Evo mechs. Either way, great set😊
The thing I find really interesting about this set is that even though Jiro is a lightning dragon, and Jay rides him in the set, he is in fact Nya's dragon predominantly. Which I think is a really clever mix-up and I really like the idea of the ninja riding dragons that don't necessarily correlate to their elemental powers.
ok so this is my favorite set of the wave but I just really wish we had a dragon like this for Cole…

can you do the Lloyd mech next? and after your done reviewing all the sets you should do a video on which to buy
makes sense considering this is people introduction to the new series so when people get these, these will be there first sets so it makes sense to have incredible designs and figures
As someone who has started collecting the actually good dragons last yr, I hope the futures ones are like this or better
I remember Lloyd's legendary dragon from last year (he was helpful) Zane's dragon from this year was great too, I've been collecting dragons for a while and they're getting better, I'm buying this one in a few days and I can't wait to build it!

To answer your Bionicle question, they were called Zamor spheres/launchers. Enemies used theirs for mind control while the heroes has theirs made fo neutralize the mind control. The piece was then used in Midak Light blasters later.

Man after seeing that Lego Ninjago unboxing video you made a few days ago I was just checking to see if you made this review (as I had my eyes on the set) and I didn’t see it and suddenly a few hours later I get the notification that you uploaded it! Amazing timing! Anyway, great review! The set looks pretty good! I hope to get it as a birthday gift this upcoming Friday! (My birthday is on May 26 :) )

I would be tempted to get the set, but the problem I have is that I really don’t care for the dragon in it because I’ve been collecting Ninjago since 2011, but I adore the mech. It has such a cool design and the scale is perfect.

The typical Lego ball pieces, which were indeed created for Bionicle, are called Zamor Spheres.
I think Ras is from Chima, cause in posession one ir the realms Lloyd and Moro fight in Is the Chima World.

Her mech design does remind me exactly of the Emperor of Mankind from Warhammer 40k. Plus, the sci-fi-esque setting of Imperium really does gave 40k vibes, with the Imperium Claw Hunters kinda looking like either the Custodes or the Space Marines. I guess one of the designers are secretly Warhammer 40k fans themselves...

Although I will not be returning to ninjago until the prices are lowered (1,000 pieces for $130 is god awful) crystallized and dragon rising have been beautiful waves. There’s a range of characters that we used to see in the 2010s.

if I would need to chose one set I would defently pick this set cuz the dragon is amazing and the figures are cool
so when I got Zane's ice dragon creature for my birth day and built it up my first thought is elder dragon, I mean it just looks like an elder dragon with the big bottom jay and the ice coming out of its head, it just gives of the elder dragon vibe, then when i took the dragon back to my room I saw jays lightning dragon Evo and I emidiantly thought a young elder dragon that is still growing so when I saw this review I thought it evolved in to the dragon you just reviewed, do ya get what I mean? it is like it has reached it's own true potential and as is as powerful as it can be, any way COLOSAL fan keep up the good work, hope i can be on the ambassador network one day.

While this set is definitely overpriced, it’s such a great set that it can more easily justify that higher price. Of course I would love it to be cheaper because cheaper is of course better but like Kai’s Golden Dragon Raider from last summer it’s not completely outrageous unlike some other sets I’ve seen recently & if it’s the only set or only 1 of 2 sets you’re getting this wave I can still justify the price to some degree.

The fact that the wings of the jet are removable will eventually cause the piece that holds them to break. They tend to be brittle. It seems that Lego did not consider that in the design, it will have to be modified

The dragon looks awesome but how many sets is Jay gonna get? He already got an amazing Titan Mech set but the only thing Cole gets is an EVO Dragon that isn’t even cannon?
Cole has really been getting the short end of the stick ever since his only season the last few years
The better question is how many dragons is Jay going to get? I know he likes flying but holy hell
After watching the show, I have a really hard time understanding why they put Jay in the set over someone who fits the scene like Lloyd or Arin. We saw that Jay isn’t around, and including him for the sole reason of it being a lightning dragon just doesn’t make sense to me.
