    This Hoover is pure art!
    These dirty air vacuums have massive air flow what lifts the carpet up. They don't have much suction, but airflow is the important part along with the agitation. I have learned this with my Kirby G6. Airflow with the agitation is what truly deep cleans the carpets. I just can't over the fact how awesome your Hoover Decade is!

      Amen to that! I have a very similar Hoover Guardsman upright at home (along with four Convertibles), and the suction, airflow and agitation are just amazing. It's no wonder the Convertible/Decade line was the most popular in the United States for 36 years!

      The classic beats as it sweeps as it cleans action is still the best way to clean carpets in my opinion and experience. No good for hard floors of course.

    I have this in my collection. I find the hoover belts a bit to big sometimes in manufacturing. I use Eureka upright belts in my Hoover's. The slipping of the belt always stops. The Eureka belts are tad bit smaller and helps. Also, the metal spindle on top of the fan, it can get dirty and allow the belt to slip. An easy way to fix this, is take the belt off, and turn the machine on, and hold brass bristle brush to the turning spinal. A great trick that always helps I've found.

    I put my studio cans on vacuum sounds perfectly normal and healthy! You might need to grease/oil some bearing pointsthere's a sleeve bearing on top of the motor that usually needs a little bit of oil. The brush roller bearings are open in generally need to be greased. Your Oreck scent tabs will work just fine in the machine. Hoover just make a HEPA carbon bag for this as well. Have a good Thanksgiving 🦃 .

    Had a decade 80 Hoover upright. The hose clipped in the front under the Beater bar plate, the older Hoover’s the hoses plugged in the back of the vacuum..

    My family had one of these and it was in storage for many many years. I've always used tank vacuums myself and was eager to give this thing a try. I noticed right off that the noise was horrendous. I checked the belt and found it was slipping. It was still pliable though. Which brought me to an interesting discovery. The bearings in the rotating brush assembly were froze solid. It must have been putting a terrific load on the motor. When I removed this, I found it was not made to disassemble. Having nothing to lose, I started spraying WD-40 is every seam possible and allowed it to soak. Little by little the axle freed up. I kept spraying WD-40 using the little red tube attachment through the roller until everything that dripped out was clear, then turned it over did the same thing to the other end. I blew it all out with compressed air as much as possible and added sewing machine oil to each end of the roller. It's working fantastic now. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is why I read people complaining about having to replace the belts constantly. The roller is easy to remove and check. Also, I noticed replacement rollers online. Will probably buy one soon. I'm also looking for a service manual so I can disassemble the fan and motor unit to properly lubricate as I'm sure it's as dry as the roller grease was.

    The brush roll is stopping because the amount of fine dust you’re picking up in one go is coating the belt and causing it to slip. That is the only problem with these types of Hoovers.

  • @excelsior2708
    @excelsior2708 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I believe your belt is worn out. It shouldn’t slip unless it is old or worn. Round belts trend to wear faster. Replace the belt and you will be able to vacuum without the brush stalling.

    • @ibaisaic

      ibaisaic ahh. I wonder if a smaller round belt would be better. Older eurekas that use round belts I always found using a Hoover concept belt was better. It has far more tension and gripped without slipping.

    The Decade 80s were fantastic machines. If I'm not mistaken, the Decade 80 series was the TOL upright in Hoover's range, with the mint green model with air freshener the absolute best and most deluxe model. Hoover kept the traditional Convertible as the BOL in the range with a completely redesigned hood and higher performance motor. By the late 80s, the Decade 80 became the Decade 800 with a blue/gray color scheme. Hoover kept the Convertible/Decade style cleaners going well into the next decade (pun intended) with the special edition Supremacy series, which were available exclusively at Hoover dealers. By the mid 90s, Hoover had transitioned their entire upright line to the newer Elite style machines. You can tell Hoover started to cost-cut production with the high performance Convertible and the Decade; they went to an all-plastic base and hood, along with a plastic fan. Near the end of the run, the baseplate even went to plastic. Despite this, they were still built incredibly sturdy that can easily give you decades of use (another pun, I know) :P

    Thank you for the good wishes Roger! Canadian Thanksgiving is celebrated every year on the second Monday in October since the late 1800’s. I imagine it’s scheduled earlier because our climate requires harvesting to be completed earlier than the USA due to our colder weather in the fall. What a deliciously mint green Hoover! Just put some mint-smelling air freshener in the bag! Strange that the brushroll is jamming on such flat carpeting. Maybe this will stop happening as the bag fills.

  • @David49305
    @David49305 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Not a fan of mint green but it looks nice on this. There is something about the style and color that just works. I miss when quality was the standard instead of the exception. I don't think you can beat a dirty fan cleaner in terms of carpet cleaning performance. Sometimes simple really is the best.

    • @ibaisaic
      @ibaisaic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The old way of suction, beating and sweeping was and still is the best way to clean carpet.

  • @hoover1060
    @hoover1060 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This sounds pretty good to me, sadly the quality control was not the best, and the agitators were not well balanced. Try it with a brush roll from a U.K. Machine that you know is balanced and the sound should improve. You could also try a CWP brush roll on it, which would make it amazingly quiet.

    Decade 80 hoods had a lot of play in them which congrats and make all kinds of noise. First check the brushroll. Make sure it’s not bent or warped if it’s wooden. If it still rattles and is noisy remove the hood from the machine. Check to see if there is any play or movement in the headlight lens. If so use some clean silicone to insulate and dampen. If still there is a rattle try sticking some small felt chair leg floor protector pads on the very front of the main pan/motor housing. This is the part that everything attaches to. Sometimes what happens is the beating action causes the top cover good to vibrate against the front is the main pan/motor housing. So by sticking those felt pads in between the removable hood and the main body it acts as a buffer. And since it’s felt it cushions bumps and prevents any abrasion on the two plastic components. These brush rolls cause a lot of vibration especially ones with the beater bars. And often the original steel rollers would bend slightly under the belt tension of the rod inside would get bent in service. If this is the case replace brush assembly. These tips will hopefully help significantly quiet down any decade80/800/guardsman/supremacy users with this style hood and lens. Mine now runs smooth and quiet with no added vibrations except those caused by the brush hitting the carpet action. And certainly no longer any plastic parts rattling about. Hope this helps!

    Another great video. Could the voltage still be a bit high?

    • @jrmcferren
      @jrmcferren 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's possible, I did notice some flickering in the lights while he was cleaning and that the lights were bright on startup. The flickering could be a loose connection and needs rectified, the bright lights on startup just means that he may want to keep a few extra bulbs around as it appears that this machine uses the motor as a transformer for low voltage light bulbs like Oreck did. I learned to start my two speed Oreck on low until the motor came up to low speed then flip to high.
      Another thing, the voltage tolerance on vacuums, especially of this type are limited mainly by the light bulbs. Even if he is feeding 132 volts which is out of official tolerance, there would be no ill effect to anything other than the light bulbs.
