I really enjoyed watching this reading journal video addition to seeing how you decided to set up your October pages in your Traveler's sized notebook. 🦇🕷⚰️💀👻
👻😱 So pretty and comprehensive . Haven’t been a book reader in years but I’m fascinated by your dedication to recording your journey through book reading. I was an addict when it came to books….nothing else mattered once I started reading a book including eating and sleeping.
I was in a book slump this summer after reading too many romance books back-to-back. I switched to reading the fantasy genre, which has helped me to engage more with the books I'm reading. I recently read Piranesi by Susanna Clark. I interpreted it as a mix between fantasy and mystery, with laybrinth vibes. Would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys that sort of thing.
I use my reading journal to try read outside of my comfort zone, with reading goals. 5 non-fic, 5 600+ pages, 5 local authors, etc. it helps to not get stuck in a slump. But still having space to have those comfort reads that don't start blending all together
If you're into epic fantasy and you haven't read it, I would recommend one of my very favourite books ever, The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison. We follow Maia, the estranged half-goblin son of the emperor of the elflands, who suddenly becomes emperor after his father and brothers die/ are maybe murdered. It's very much just about him navigating politics and court intrigue while trying his absolute damnedest to be a good person. The prose is beautiful and Maia is such a thoughtful, lovely cinnamon roll, too good for this world (not in a cartoon internet way, it's just the world could very well chew him up and spit him out less caring and good but he won't let it happen).
I've just started a reading journal this year to help me out of a years long reading slump - i was still reading every now and then but tended to reread more. I've really enjoyed branching out a bit more this year and wanted to suggest some non-fiction. I don't tend to read non-fiction myself but loved these this year - to make you laugh & think I recommend Born A Crime by Trevor Noah. He narrates the audiobook and it's so good! All about his childhood growing up in South Africa. For something a little more spooky season related, Grimoire Girl by Hilarie Burton Morgan (of One Tree Hill fame). A beautiful memoir about finding your home & yourself as an adult.
I get like this with reading too but I find an easy fix is to just not read for a while! Sometimes I’ll even take a break in the middle of a book and it lets me enjoy finishing it rather than that feeling of having to slog through it. Also, changing genres can help I mainly read mystery/thrillers but I’ll pick up a chick lit romance novel or some non-fiction when I feel like a change👻 My standout (and only book😂) for September was Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, I absolutely loved it and know I’ll definitely go back to it again!
Contemporary romances are usually hit or miss for me but you’ve convinced me to give Lovelight Farms a try, the setting and the seasons theme sound so magical!
Also! Whenever I feel like the books I’ve been reading blur together or that none of them have been enjoyable, I go read a completely different genre, or go back and reread an old favorite or a comfort read, or I just take a break from reading entirely. It helps bring some of the fun back to reading when I feel “meh” about several books in a row. 🔮👻
👻🎃🧙♀️ I've just come out of a pretty major reading slump and since I don't have the time and energy to make booktube videos anymore, I've really been enjoying reading journalism as a creative outlet to hang out in my favourite worlds a little longer. I've just received The Bell Witches in the mail, and I'm looking forward to your spooky book bingo!
I have been « starting » a reading journal for months now. October is the month it will become a reality. I started reading Mort and I am checking books in my TBR that could go in the bingo. I have a square journal and I will see how it goes but I don’t plan on having a lot of stats or writing long text on each book so a traveler journal might be a great size for me. More of a list of book read than essays on each book read😁
I have to recommend a book that I surprisingly enjoyed a lot and I warmed up to as an audiobook as well -- City Under One Roof by Iris Yamashita. It's a mystery set in Alaska so it's wintery and has some of the best characters I've come across in a while. It's not that long and I LOVED listening to it in the evenings with a cup of tea
Same with Emily Henry, Book lovers and beach read have been my favorite and funny story was a win for me. ❤ I also have heard so many good things about the B.K Borison so I just got my library hold to read
👻Hi Erin. My favourite book for September was -The Briar Club - Kate Quinn. Not my normal read, but I loved it. No romance at all. You need a break from romance. Then you’ll be fine. 😊
🎃 🎃 🎃 Great video Erin, love the October set up in your travellers. My standout book for September was Legends & Lattes, I went into it not expecting much and enjoyed it so much I bought the rest of the series immediately.
I think you'd do well to branch out of romance. I know they're easy and fast reads, but what's the point of reading a lot if you're not really enjoying the books? Especially because you listen a lot on audio and a good narrator can disguise a subpar book.
I think mysteries and thrillers are a great transition out of only reading romance. Plus, Agatha Christie has just a vast repertoire that you could essentially just read her for a while.
🎃 I really enjoyed Belladonna in September. It was so atmospheric and perfect to ring in the spooky season. I hope to read Emily Wilde this month as well but I don’t have a copy yet as I usually don’t acquire too many books at once.
I love the way you do your reading journal! You actually inspired me to start my own reading journal. I've never done one before. I also happen to watch a lot of movies so I'm wondering if it'll be too chaotic to put them all in one place? I'm happy the algorithm brought me to your channel!
I love watching your reading journal videos and I'm happy to say my reading journal is actually working for me this time. LOL Anyway, my standout read for Sept. was The Measure by Nikki Erlick. It was a book club pick for the new book club I joined. Great way to start out a book club lol. Looking forward to seeing how your Oct reading goes. 👻💀
Monthly book stats: pages read, read from TBR (all of my previously bought books that I haven't read yet, 176 cough) and how much I spent on buying new books
I just finished listening to The Witchstone by Henry H. Neff its a bit of a slow starter but by the end I had to stay up and finish listening the end last night. Totally rec and fits in nicely with the spooky season, though not excessively spooky. 👻
Hey Erin! Ok I had a similar idea for tracking the books I read this year, but I haven't really started my journal. it may be an after the year catch up project, but I wanted to get pictures of the spines of the books I read, read/audio, and put them in as the books on the shelf. I'm looking forward to making a page for a reading journal for the Bewitched bingo, though it may start out digital design. 👻🧛♂🧟♂🧙🎃
Thank you for the book recommendations. I am starting a reading journal but I don’t think I’m going to put stats in except books finished and when. I want to focus on writing what the book meant to me and why first I think. 👻
Great video, joined the challenge on storygraphs but I doubt I will fill the bingo board. Will be reading a good mix of spooky stuff this month though. I anticipate me filling a bout three of the bingo squares.
You should try ‘The Last Tale of the Flower Bride’. It would be perfect for spooky season too. Her books are so atmospheric and beautifully written. And this was my book pick of the year last year. Sooo beautiful and sooo dark, with a little romance too.
Hello Erin! Here's my reccomendation to a book that will shake your consciosness. And really, a historical fiction that I will reccomend to anyone who wants to immerse into profound themes and actual societal issues. It is called The Berry Pickers, and the topics it dwells are powerfull and heavy, so check out the TW. Without spoiling anything, it tackles loss of cultural heritage, systematic racism and residential schools for Indigenous peoples, troubled family dynamics, and also, generational trauma.
👻 I have a yearly stats page where I write down books read, total pages, audio vs physical, top 3 books. Since I read different genres, I decided to have a top 3 of for each month, one romance, one mystery and one other (so that would be thriller or fantasy). So 6 months fits onto 1 page.
I've also just come out of a huge slump and it's honestly really hard to get back into it but maybe try the Luna series by Letty Frame or the Second Chances series by Letty Frame. Both will leave you sobbing but have lovable characters as well as a few douchebags who are lovely to her. Both are RH so if that's something you're uncomfortable with then please skip. Second chances explores mental health and is actually very very realistic with depression and wanting to unalive. They are both guaranteed HEA and completed so no need to wait for the next book in the series! I hope you get out of your slump soon and find enjoyment in reading again!
if you want a book that will make you ✨feel something✨ Id recommend The Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer. there's still a bit of romance in there but it's not the main point. The writing is fantastic -- so whimsical and inspiring. It was such a wonderful book❤
I try to mix up the genre so I dont read similar books back to back. It helps. To bad the library doesnt understand this. :) I dont think you would enjoy butcher and blackbird. It is more graphic with the murders than I think you will like. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard for me was a fun read. I felt it has a similar vibe and pace as The Serpent and the Wings of Night but not as dark. It is also a mix of some Spark of the Everflame as well. One Dark Window by by Rachel Gillig has a dark and creepy feel maybe similar to Under the Mountain in a Court of Thorns and Roses. It is my favorite book series this year. 2 books is perfect but I miss it very much.
I have the same problem. Maybe try some more indie books? There is a lot of variation in books there that you dont necessarily find in traditional publishing (I am biased).
You finally did it. I just put in a huge order for supplies to start a reading journal (again). One Question though what is the pink-ish pen you use to write your reviews? Oh and I was totally influenced and am now reading lovelight farms 😂
👻🎃 I've also been in a romance slump for a while, I keep buying them in kindle deals then going 'eh' whenever I look through the list for something to read! I am just starting in to reading again. And thinking about a reading journal. But for your reading Slump. I am now reading her name was Sarah from Tatiana de rosnay. It has an different writing style. what makes is interesting. Do not know if you already know it. 🎃
Give the book All Systems Red a go! its sci-fi and was actually so good! I'm also on a Fantasy/Romance burn out lately. I've gotten my book club to read it and the also loved it. 🕸🕷

I just read the whole Glimmer Falls series, luckily I asked my library for a copy of book 3 like 5 weeks ago so I got it just in time to read all three last month. They were my favorite books all month. I agree book two wasn't as good as book one. Book three was super steamy and a lot better than two. You mentioned a storygraph and I would love to follow you do you have your username listed? I ended up reading 13 books last month and it was a pretty mixed review month too. I read paranormal romance all month it was great. I also just finished, The Exorcist tonight. Not as scary considering the movie makes me laugh and I was expecting it to be more scary. It didn't even give me chills. Not a great start to my spooky reads. I did like the narration by the author though, and the prose were good.

And doing that everyday, I will run out of my free time beside work. This why I upgraded my reading journal into an "entertainment journal", sometimes called "media journal", to track them all. I have a journal for another hobby but it’s not something that needs much work - I do Cotswold and North West Morris dancing and I have a journal for the names and traditions and figures of the dances because there are a lot to keep track of 😅 but it only needs updating when I have to learn a new dance. I am honestly not that interested in TV and movies so books get most of my time, and making 2 TH-cam videos a week plus running a photography business doesn’t leave me with much free time anyway 😅
I really enjoyed watching this reading journal video addition to seeing how you decided to set up your October pages in your Traveler's sized notebook. 🦇🕷⚰️💀👻

loved every minute of this long reading journal video
cant wait to see ur travel size reading journal finish up the year
I enjoyed watching this video. The setup for September and October are both beautiful.
My only advice for using sticker paper is go for the matte, and print anything in colour in the highest quality!
That traveller’s size notebook is sooo cute 🥰 👻

I am honestly not that interested in TV and movies so books get most of my time, and making 2 TH-cam videos a week plus running a photography business doesn’t leave me with much free time anyway 😅

I dnf'd Hooked. I just couldnt get into it. It might have been the narration, i didnt like it.
I so understand that Jen - I considered it but I didn't have anything else lined up so I was like "this is easier than deciding what else to read" 🤣
You definitely need to switch up genres for a bit. You're romanced out so to speak.
Hook and Wendy as a pairing? Automatic turn off for me
