  • Another face mask? Yes but faster & easier than ever!!!!!!
This method uses a serger & a sewing machine but can be adapted if you don't have a serger. There are no pleats & no turning right sides out. This eliminates time & hassle letting you make bunches more! In place of the elastic, use cording - paracord or shoe or boot laces. To make cutting really fast & accurate, use my Winner Designs 8" x 10" Rectangle Template. Kid masks can be done with my 7" x 9" Rectangle. Plus, I show how to 'fussy cut' with my Fussy Cut Frame to get those cool designs right where you want them!

An old trick my grandma used for threading elastic and laces was to put a safety pin through the end of the lace or elastic and then push it through. The pin being solid goes in easily and passes through like a knife through butter. Pull it out the other end and remove the pin. Job done. She used to be a professional seamstress 70 + years ago making posh frocks for the gentry in England. Everything was either hand stitched or by her trusty old Singer which I later learnt to use. Also back in 1957 she made my mum’s wedding dress and six bridesmaids dresses too, I still have the dress.

Love this mask! My son is a CNA and likes that the mask can hang down so he can breathe for a few minutes when outside of a room, but he hated tying them. So, I added a cord lock to the ends of the shoe strings! It was a PERFECT! Easy to adjust and no more tying and no more hair caught in the laces! 😁😁😁

I use a similar pattern from Homemadeonourhomestead; yours is very efficient, too. I've found that stitching about 1/2" from the top and 1" away from the side channel seams allows for the removal of chenille stems prior to washing. The stems rust. Any lightweight, bendable wire can easily be inserted into the channel, provided the ends are curled to keep the points from catching in the material or poking skin. While I prefer to stitch-and-turn to accommodate a filter pocket, I can see where your two-layer serged style is nice for covering other masks. Great video! Thank you for sharing.

Oh how I wish I could sew. I’m a 68 y o widow with MS/Multiple Sclerosis, blind in my left eye, as well as other diagnosis. I’m on my 60th day of self isolation. 😔 Last Summer I bought a very inexpensive Sewing Machine when one of our Craft Stores was going out of business! COVID19 might very well be the reason that I try to learn how to sew! After raising 3 children & hand sewing only this might be what finally gives me that push at least to try. No Serger here but with your instructions I’m hopeful I can learn. I fell in love with the fabric you used as a model. What a lovely piece in itself. Hoping to find your FaceBook page, etc in the description box. My vision is very poor but along with good old Dollar Tree glasses for close work I’m certainly going to give this a try, if I can figure out how to set up the Sewing Machine, Bobbin, etc. Here in Ohio most stores are opening May 12th. Our Governor is still asking us to stay at home unless we have to go out for necessities. Unfortunately he backtracked on making masks mandatory which really frightens me. 😔 In my opinion he should’ve kept it “mandatory with exceptions”. Too many careless people these days so if I finally get out I know I need to wear a Mask. TY {{{ HUGGZ }}} for sharing your knowledge. New Subbie here. ~Su. Plz overlook any typos. My vision in my right eye is also going thru issues now as well. Stay safe my new YT Friend❣️

Great Video - fast and efficient - I had not thought to use my serger to avoid turning. One thing I did differently was I sewed an angle at the four corners - I used 1 inch with my sewing machine and turning, I think about 1/2 " would work on the serger. This way when you turn under for the cord channel you don't have all that bulk at the top and bottom but a nice angle at the top and bottom. I hope I explained that well. Also I know what you mean about the tee shirt cords but what I like is once I tie the top in place I don't need to un tie, it stretches enough to slip on and off. I'm off to see more of your videos - I love your no nonsense style!

I just purchased some more fabric and want to make masks for the family using this method. I also bought "Kiwi Sneaker No-Tie shoe laces in the shoe department at Walmart. They come with a a pair of stretching shoe laces, a toggle, and end caps. I'm going to try to use it so instead of having to tie the lace, I can just pull the toggle and adjust it so that it is comfortable. Hoping the laces are long enough at 44", but if not, can get longer laces. I was having a difficult time finding toggles which I wanted to use once I saw your video, so decided to try these. Hope it works! Also, this design will be great because I wear glasses and have hearing aids and the masks that fit around my ears are not comfortable. Thanks for the video!

So many people have commented about not letting the mask dangle because the part that was against the face is hanging down. I've made a ton of these and we leave the mask tied behind our head and when we need to pull it down, we don't untie it, but pull the tied part down onto our neck and then the inside of the mask is folded so as to not get contaminated. Not sure if everyone who has commented on this will read this, but I hope so. I made a ton of these for my grandson to take back to college.

Hi Linda! I feel like a mask making machine! I like how quick things go when you have the right machines and tools. I've used the same bootlaces, same idea but I use a cord lock. Guys prefer that cord lock for their masks. Thanks for this tutorial

@@karinas9922 I've had the cord locks from different projects. The laces are easy to put in the locks because of the plastic at the ends of the laces.

Wish I had a stash of fabric, I'm using pillow cases and old bedsheets here in Illinois. I like to sew but haven't for a while, making do!ls and doll clothes. I've made some masks with what I had, I work at a special needs school but we are obviously closed now I have time on my hands!
I enjoyed your video and simple pattern use! I like the idea of stringing the ties through a casing! I will try that next time!

Me too, here in Corning NY. Had a few pieces of fabric, had to cut one of my cotton sheet, it had elastic to form the corners, could not find any elastic anywhere before the shutdown. I did find some clothesline at the dollar store for cord material. Works good

Christine Weber is Joann Fabrics still giving away fabric for masks? I ran out of elastic and cut 2” strips off an old t-shirt made of sturdy, but not thick, material 100% cotton.

Great idea, I will use your advice and added my own little goodies. I am using stretchable shoes strings for ties.
And also you can use floral ties instead of pipe cleaners if you cannot find them. The floral ties can also serve for threading the shoe laces or cords into the side casting but folder one floral tie in half, leave a small loop at the fold and use it as the guide to thread in the strings.
I would love to be able to serge but I don't have a serger so if you have a tip on how to serge with sewing machine to share I would appreciate any advice. Thanks again for sharing!! Stay safe everyone!

I'm making the Olson mask sewing by hand and that is alot of work. This method is alot simpler. The only I'd have to do is leave an opening in the back because the senior program I attend wants a filter in DIY face mask. But this method is so much faster and I never thought of using a shoe lace.
