@pammens miss How is German unification a failure? Germany is one of the most powerful countries in the world. They and France together dominate the EU. There is inequality between West and East but recovering from communism takes time. Given a choice between all the post communist countries, East Germany has some of the best outcomes.

In terms of votes gained, the LibDems easily won this, yet they lost 1 seat overall, including their leader, targeted massively by the SNP while she campaigned away for others. They gained 1.2million votes (4.2%). Johnson by contrast gained only 300,000 votes at about 1%, yet FPTP voting took him from 9 seats short of a majority to a massive majority.
Also, the Greens received over 3% of the vote at 1 million for just 1 seat, similar to the Brexits on zero seats. But the SNP on just 3.9% with hardly any increase, won 47 seats, including an extra 11. There is no fairness, no democratic representation and no moral legitimacy for this Tory majority government. PR voting has to arrive, or Britain is doomed to 1 party elective dictatorship government. Putin is proud of what he's helped to happen

In large part, the swings were more away from Labour than to any one of the other parties: for which the blame must lie with Corbyn's lack of strategy for dealing with the remain-leave split within his own party: plus major errors like failing to deal with antisemitic comrades. He tried to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds.
Boris Johnson realised early on that Brexit was his equivalent of Lord Randolph Churchill's "Orange Card." That served the Tories well in the industrial North for two or three generations. Brexit, as a cargo cult, may not last them as long.
Ulster is not just up to Boris. The US Congress has resolved not to allow any trade deal if the Good Friday Agreement is endangered: whatever Trump might accept. Reunification may happen once the Catholics are in a majority, or earlier if Brexit crashes the British economy.
Cameron must have been relieved not to be the last Prime Minister of Great Britain. The main argument against independence was that Scotland would automatically be out of the EU: the Spanish PM was most insistent on that. Now the situation is reversed. I doubt that Boris has the same attachment to the UK (or to anything).

Yet again another election where i'm disappointed by FPTP.
More voters chose Lab, LD, Green, SNP than Tory, DUP, BXP
11.5% of voters chose LD and they returned 1.7% of seats
Boris has his 'mandate' and a serious majority despite the fact that 51% of the country voted for pro EU/second referendum parties.

Most of the jobs being created in the US are very low paid. Many people have to work two or three jobs to earn a living income.
Most people are print literate; how many of them could earn an honours degree in English literature or write a good novel.
Most people are car literate; how many could be car mechanics, let alone design parts.
These jobs do not require computer literacy; we are talking HND level education as a minimum with most roles requiring graduate+ levels.

    • @gontmawr5010
      @gontmawr5010 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@theother1281 no, not at all. The industry and wages have shot up in the US. Obviously if you are educated to a HND level, get a job that represents that.
There is no stopping anyone getting the qualifications they need whilst being there. In fact, it's a boon.
For someone who was homeless, now run my own business through hard work and and sheer determination not to live on benefits. Not got my own home yet, but that's next on my list.
Understand.... Equality of opportunity is the driving force behind capitalism. The opportunity's are there for EVERYONE to benefit.
Equality of outcome (which is a mantra the Left go by) is a false egalitarian dream which can only be forced by government intervention.

Raw intelligence is the limiting factor.
Like the UK, high skilled earnings in the US have shot up; but for the majority wages have been near stagnant.
Industry is increasing, but it doesn't create mass employment. A steel mill today achieved the same production with 500 workers that took 3,500 in the seventies; cloth manufacturing needs about a 10th; car manufacturing a 20th.
People think Brexit will take Britain back to the cheap energy, pre-cybernetic economy of before we joined the EEC. Isn't going to happen, because the changes were not down to the EEC, so leaving changes nothing except reducing our bargaining strength.
In many places equality of the opportunity does not exist or is severely curtailed. In the UK it has been in severe decline for the last 40 years.
I don't know about your business, but I work in software and at least 30% of the people I work with aren't smart enough for the jobs they have (demand is so high that the less effective have to be employed); however AI will make them redundant within the next 10 to fifteen years.
On the same timescale most delivery and cab drivers will be replaced by AI, people will just be needed to carry the goods into the customer.

They keep talking about the red wall wanting a softer brexit, where did they get that idea from? My take was the old industrial heartlands want a harder brexit (one of the many reasons they didnt back Labour)... they want their industry back, not scraps from the Germans table? You can say its a mistake but its could also a mistake not to try (with addition of never knowing/proving them wrong)? * btw jrm is very likeable.

It's not so much about what they want, but about delivering something that is still widely accepted as brexit while minimising economic fallout. These areas may preach a hard form of brexit, but I'm sure they'll change their tune once the workers at Nissan are sent home because the production line is blocked up by customs.

Most if not all of these Tory voters in the Northern industrial areas did not vote for a soft Brexit, they voted for getting out of the EU. If they had thought for one moment that leaving the EU would materially affect their lives they would not have voted Tory. Clearly no one has persuaded the vast majority of the people that frictionless trade with Europe as you call it, is such a vitally important thing to have. So what if it takes a day or two longer for your jam to arrive in Berlin, for example. This assuming that is that the company you work for is producing anything for export, never mind something that has to arrive within 24 hours? This also assuming that you have a job at all. Where are these millions of job loses going to come from? What industries will actually be badly affected? What products would not be made under WTO, which would have been otherwise? No one has bothered to answer these questions, because there is either very few, or not enough to justify paying billions in various ways to remain in the EU, with all of the other disadvantages, costs, and lack of democratic accountability. I run my own exporting manufacturing company, and if I don't have a bloody clue, then I strongly suggest that neither of you do either.
I currently sell my products all over the World, with no problems at all, 30% of which to EU states. Far from trade to EU states being frictionless, there is in reality MORE paperwork involved, then selling them anywhere else. The majority of the paperwork is done, and all of the duty paid by the importer, not the exporter. If my customers can't be bothered with either, it is best that they did not buy them in the first place. If a foreign or domestic customer makes a profit from buying and selling stuff, they will carry on doing so, with or without a bit of duty to be paid, or a 24 hour delay in delivery. If they can make the bloody things themselves or buy the same cheaper from a local supplier, they would already be doing so. If up to 4% duty makes so much difference, then they can basically sod off.
