The most important recording of any piece in the romantic piano repertoire. As influential and standard-setting as the early Gould-Goldberg for Bach, Arrau for Beethoven, and Kempff for Schubert. And it sounds so fresh. Lean, unsentimental, crystal clear, lays out the score like a blueprint. A weird combination of totally effortless on the one hand and life-and-death struggle on the other. I'm struck by how much better his command of the piano is than that of the current crowd. Speed, accuracy, power, polyphony, dynamic contrasts, coloration, melodic lines, bass progressions, architectural intelligence, on and on - no one alive today, with the possible exception of St. Martha, can remotely play at that level and with that combination of attributes.

Artur Rubinstein is said to have stated on witnessing the blazing temperament of the young Horowitz ''I sensed in the young Russian a new liszt capable of vanquishing all competition and nearly gave up everything''.
Thank you for restoring this historic recording so splendidly.

The brilliance of his playing at 18.30 mins, leading up to the return of the first subject, is marvelous. He keeps his right foot off the fxxking pedal and reveals every bit of Liszt’s piano-composing genius!,

I love the way Horowitz brings out the melodies in the left hand: fully ambidextrous piano skill; You can bet Liszt had it!

I'm happy to be the first to comment on this miraculous transfer of this miraculous performance! The young Volodya, at the height of his titanic, volcanic, elemental powers, delivering a reading of such overwhelming command and mastery! Yet rendered with such finesse and delicacy in the lyrical sections, with the shading, voicing, and coloration that would be interwoven into so many of his future interpretations! He gives each phrase, each measure its proper weight, while holding together this massive work as the grand, majestic, cohesive entity that Liszt intended it to be! IMHO, the mightiest of all Liszt Sonatas! Thank you so much for posting.

Of course Liszt would have played it better. If even Anton Rubinstein wasn't worthy of comparison to Liszt, then the young Horowitz wouldn't have been in his league.

Before I had ever heard the Liszt Sonata or even owned a score, I borrowed the Angel LP transfer from 78"s, and listened to it. i was staggered, and yet, always more taken aback each time I heard another performance and finally developed my own association with it. This recording is one of the great performances of any music on any recording, and certainly one of Horowitz's very greatest recordings. I have heard many great artists play this piece, and the "next-best" I could imagine would be Richter. Many thanks for posting this fine restoration! (For a bit of "shop talk", I would add that this absolutely staggering performance uses the least pedal I can imagine.)

My choice for next best is also Gilels, live in Moscow in, I think, 1962. The great German music critic Joachim Kaiser wrote about this recording, "only Gilels and Richter come close to Horowitz's interpretation."

I prefer the later studio performance of this - the way he leaves just a bit of space before the climax of 23:28 just kills me. He’s the greatest. His performances of this piece bought me very close to quitting my career as a jazz pianist and moving over to classical. I saw sense but what I would give to be able to play this piece proficiently.

This is an incredible transfer and I kind of grew up with it, understanding that is probably will never be surpassed. It's frustrating to hear that EMI did not provide a full Conert Grand Steinway D, only a model B with 211cm length. Your transfer, however, is superb and makes you forget that aspect.
There's a weird noise starting at 0:43 like unintended overtone ringing. Maybe you can fix this at one point.
The technology you used is incredible and I ask you to visit 1942 and 1943 recordings of Rachmaniinoff and breathe new life into them.

I was fortunate enough to attend 6 of his recitals in the US and in Japan, all in the 70s and 80s. Although I possess all his recordings issued in different forms, packagings and countries, this superb transfer of the old gem has somehow escaped my attention. So far, my favorite transfer has been the one issued by the St. Laurent Studio some while ago, but the uploaded transfer may possibly surpass it in terms of sound quality. TH-cam, however, does not allow one to decide which is the better transfer, due to its sound limitations. Is this transfer commercially available on CD (or, better still, SACD) format? If available, then on what label? I am keen to learn the information. Many thanks in advance.

I think it is a most marvelous transfer too. I don't know that it was ever released on any commercial medium - it was sent to me privately by Dr. John Duffy many years ago - it was his own private work.

I'm glad I'm not a professional pianist so that this recording would induce me to quit. I had a teacher who was famous pianist in her own right, and she drove many adult serious pianists to quit. They wanted pointers or polishing and what they discovered was their complete inadequacy. Sylvia was not cruel in the least but she was brutally honest
