So happy to live in a climate that we can ride 12 months of the year. In fact winter is often better riding than summer. Interesting content as all your stuff Dave. I also bought the book, "The Perfect Vehicle" on your recommendation. Cheers
I keep a motorcycle in Vietnam where I reside for six months each winter. It's actually fun to spend six months on a Honda CB 350 H'ness and then return to Denmark and my BMW R 1250GS
I'm in Canada, in the off season I watch a lot of moto vloggers on TH-cam who go on long adventures, and do moto camping, to get tips on tools, equipment, etc I might need, and take notes of places to visit, so I can hit the ground running in the spring. Can't wait to ride again, and I hope my bike is dreaming about me as well...
Utah riding must be incredible! Here in the low lands of northern Europe it rained last year almost non-stop from October till March with hail, snow and freezing in between. It gets wetter/worse each year. I have bikes for the road and track, bikes for the road, bikes for the track and a bike to get from A to B. You know when to ride what and when NOT to ride. What to do in the mean time? Get your bike(s) ready for the next season, watch others ride, gain info and comment on motorcycle channels like this one and go ice-skating...
@@I_am_archie In dense euro traffic, I know how to brake ok. But even in the dry, when it is that temperature in between. When the chill is just between water and ice. That tipping point when air moisture turns into a slight icy drizzle. That is when you know you really, really should have stayed home that day. :) Envy your curvy roads and rubble off-roads.
The big secret is to keep riding, worked like a charm in the last 10 years. If there is no snow, I just switch leathers to touring winter gear and keep riding. If there is snow, I still ride, but on horses. ;)
That's what I thought, got me some warmer gear, got me a motorcycle with all of the heated things and more wind protection to keep riding. Found out it's a waste of money and riding in the cold is no fun regardless, plus the good roads are closed, there ain't enough grip for doing fun activities, and warm/bulky gear is awkward and robs me of feel.
@@Szlejer I didn't say anything about any heated gear, just grips and seat I've ridden my 690 supmoto in 16 degrees just fine before, but not for long, and plenty in 30s, same with v4 tuono. Don't feel like doing commuting or anything on v4 pikes peak sadly, it ain't much fun without doing something stupid or going pretty quickly on a decent road. Big bike, heavy bike, getting old, idk.
You just inspired me to purchase the Track Day video bundle from Yamaha Champ School, and I used your discount code at that! Thank you, sir, for the great content and encouraging us to become better riders.
Great video. In Sweden I also enjoy bicycling, skiing, ice skating on lakes, hiking. We have quite a crappy winter so far though, freezes and melts and so on. Just staying fit and enjoy videos like this 😀
Remember taking my Yamaha 175 Enduro out into the snow in the '70's. Discovered LOTS of new ways to fall down. Didn't look too "cultured and s***", but I do like Steinbeck.
Awesome that you're in Utah. I grew up there but didn't start riding until I vame to the East Coast, but I did get a chance to spend a week riding there a couple of years ago. (I now have a new appreciation for Wolf Creek and Mirror Lake.) Don't sleep on the skiing. It always gave me the same thrill I now get on the bike.
It's winter her in Norwich, UK. The temperature is fluctuating but we're getting some reasonble days so I'm getting out. I've got one or two jobs to do so there getting pencilled in as well. Stay safe and warm Dave. 🤓
We used to have the Progressive International Motorcycle Show. Covid killed that. It used to come to Chicago (Rosemont) on the first weekend in February. It was that “thing” that got me through winter.
What killed it is 85% of new riders completely leave the sport within the first two years. I blame bad information and bad training. It's probably more than just that. But in any case, we need to get that number lower.
thanks for sharing the part about online courses, i didn't know about them. i love that you mentioned low grip. i ride my scrambler during the rain, but i'll definitely get a bicycle for the snow! haha i wasn't expecting that at all. it's really cool!! it got me really excited :D
Wow. I didn't even know I needed this video. Very useful - thank you! I have to consider riding such a bike when the weather conditions are slippery. Greetings from (temporarily) snowy Poland!
GREETINGS FROM THE PPRC GREAT VIDEO TODAY. I DEFEAT PMS BY JUST GOING FOR A RIDE, RARELY ANY SNOW IF YOU JUST STAY IN THE VALLEY AND DON’T HEAD UP TO LASSEN PARK.🇺🇸🏍️
Fortunately I can ride year round in Pittsburgh, but of course December - March provide for limited opportunities. I got my own tire machine 7 years ago. I enjoy the satisfaction of 1) doing it myself and 2) not adhering to someone else's schedule.
I'm telling ya. Not being limited to someone elses availability has encouraged me to buy a great number of expensive tools. Plus, in many cases, by the time you do the job a few times, the tool has paid for itself.
I live in New Jersey and ride year round . I don’t have a winter cycle at the moment Once the salt and brine are off the roads I’ll be riding again. I just bought a new Yamha FJR and I’m not subjecting it to salt and brine.
Pacific Northwest here, and we'll see one or two winter weather events during the 9 months of the year where riding depends on what level of rain you're willing to ride in. Sadly, there are people here who winter their bikes for that time and piss and moan about wanting it to be "riding season" literally, July through September).
Same. I live on the Olympic Peninsula. Have heated liner and heated gloves. I don't mind some light rain, but January through March brings patches of ice that make me pause. I've already planned my week long trip in mid May when the passes usually open up.
Yes sir. Leaving from tacoma on Friday to ride the Canada to Mexico iron butt. It's the riding gear. Good gear makes for a nice ride, even in the cold of winter.
Awesome Video! Good thoughts for sure. Dakar has been great this year. I especially like the Dakar Explore. I didn't realize Saudi was that diverse and beautiful. Best!
Great books, all. I will add another Melissa Holbrook Pierson title-“The Man Who Would Stop at Nothing”, about Iron Butt riding. Also, “Riding With Rilke” by Ted Bishop has a place in my heart, because I own an original Ducati Monster and lived in Austin, Texas at the same time of his story. Also, check out “Motorcycling Through Midlife” by John Metzger. Finally, for some philosophical thoughts on riding and maintenance, two books by Matthew B. Crawford-“Why We Drive” & “Shop Class As Soulcraft” Keep up the great work. Enjoy the ride!
Better question today: how's a motorcyclist to survive the job market? MotoAmerica has been posting full races from last season on their channel. I like the Twins Cup and Supersport classes the most.
Question about losing grip on the front tire. In your example, you said you pushed the bike up and steered hard into the corner...are you counter-steering or direct steering?
So countersteering ONLY controls lean - it doesn't steer to the motorcycle. So in this case I absolutely direct steered into the corner to get the centripital force to push the bike upright. Check out this video; th-cam.com/video/j8JEgkKMrcs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Yy-Nnu8NcYWtwl7R

It doesn’t get warm enough to heat soak the cases so it builds up a lot of acids and condensation in the oil. If you do let it idle long enough, you’re not building up enough oil pressure so you oil starve the top end. The battery doesn’t charge because motorcycles don’t charge the battery at idle. And probably more I’m not thinking of right now. It’s totally fine to let it sit on a trickle charger.
