Yes it is and it used to annoy me on the re-runs and DVD boxset they shortened the credits.
I remember Phillip Schofield singing along to it. This totally deserves a sequel/prequel based on Homer's epic the Illiad on Netflix.

Just a shout-out to Jean Chalopin, who seems often forgotten even though he was producer and writer on lots of the Euro/Japan crossover cartoons. He really defined a childhood for lots of people and introduced them to anime style cartoons.

I loved this when I was a kid! Mysterious Cities of Gold, too!
There were a lot of European/Japanese co-productions that were hugely successful with kids in Europe during the eighties, but never made it in America.
They were generally more story oriented, rather than action. And they drew a great deal of inspiration in history and literature. Their main purpose was to properly educate kids, rather than just sell them toys.

As you may imagine the show was immensely popular in Greece. We were watching it withe the french sountrack and greek overdub broadcasted during 1983-1985. Now something that will surprise many people. The english dub is probably the worst. The original french is much better but the greek one I think that it might be superior to all. Im not saying this out of some silly nationalistic pride. There is a reason for this. Back in the 80's there were only 2 public tv stations. Private owned television was not allowed at that period. With the greek cinema industry spiraling downwards, the only outlets for actors were theatre, small cinema productions, tv serials, and overdubs. We were lucky as children to have cartoons voiced by very famous actors, of the highest calibre, along with newer ones that were influenced by their experience. When I watch Ulysses 31 in english I hear some guys doing ''funny voices'', the greek version was played more seriously, more dramatic as if it was a real play (yes with the occasional silly Nono entrance). Last summer I was sitting with my brother and I remembered that I had all the episodes of Ulysses 31. We decided to watch one for old times sake. We spent all day watching them all. It really holds well and I think because its taking itself seriously. It IS an epic tale that unfolds and keeps your interest. The design is great, with some super cool gadgets (the lazer-pistol/sword is epic) and the music one of the best ever in cartoons. Compare this with the ''quirky'' aimless garbage that kids watch today.

A little thing American viewers might not know is how high level were the dubs in Europe, for the reasons you told here but also because there where policies in France and Italy to dub everything with high standards.
In France some dialogues for other shows were trash but you can see that the adapters had a real work to adapt the dialogues and would often write more subtle dialogues with métaphores and plays on word.
Even though for most show I'll make a point to watch it in the original version, there is 10% of films or série that are better once dubbed.
I can totally relate to your story.
And sorry for the English viewers but I didn't see many anime that had better English version than japanese

I just watched the whole series last year absolutely amazing and it really unique with a sci-fi, psychedelic, inner quest feel at times as well especially with the ship being shaped as a giant eye venturing into unknown space. Back in the eighties a friend of mine found a Ulysses 31 star fighter on the beach, possibly washed up as it was slightly battered. It was treated like ancient treasure, but it’s a hazy memory, so it could be filed under the time my brother claimed he found a penguin on the same beach. I’m pretty sure the star fighter toy was real. The penguin, less so.

The original end did show them making to Hades and Ulysses and friends encounter a young couple named Orpheus and Eurydice of their version of Greek mythology who are also trying to back to Earth but their destiny takes them to the afterlife. Then Ulysses is force to decide to stay and let his crew and friends leave for Earth or refuse. He refuses but instead of being punished for his decision, he granted passage back to Earth because this was a test of his character evaluation and that convince the gods that he's a worthy person and not the villain of his deeds for Cyclops' destruction. No extra scenes for the last poem passage of the reimagined Odyssey were made for the series.

I recall two of my best buddies speaking highly of the show back in the 80s. I am on epsisode 15, and LUV It! I assume that the series was not released in the USA in 1981, becasue it's one of those that is not only gear for kids, but for adults. It has some dark themes. i can see the René Laloux influence in Ulysses 31 LOVE LIVE ULYSSES 31!!!!

Great series - have the whole thing on dvd. I believe there was some sort of rights issues at one point as one of the musical themes used in the show was ripped off from something John Williams wrote for one of the Star Wars films. Also Nono the robot was one of the great tradition of ubiquitous annoying sidekick characters in that era of cartoons. It is the 31st century, Ulysses killed the giant Cyclops when he rescued the children and his son Telemachus. But the ancient gods of Olympus are angry and threaten a terrible revenge:
Zeus: Mortals, you defy the Gods? I sentence you to travel among unknown stars. Until you find the Kingdom of Hades, your bodies will stay as lifeless as stone.
Sherka: Ulysses, the way back to earth has been wiped from my memory.
    Telemachus: Father, oh, father!
Ulysses: You are alive my son.

    soaring through all the galaxies,
    in search of Earth,
    flying in to the night.
    Ulysses, Ulysses,
    fighting evil and tyranny,
    with all his power,
    and withall of his might.
Ulysses, no-one else can do the things you do.
Ulysses, like a bolt of thunder from the blue.
Ulysses, always fighting all the evil forces bringing peace and justice to all.

I think the only problem would be staying true to the concept without letting current year politics and/or ideology influence the product. I wouldn't want to see an IP like this re-imagined or adapted right now. Creativity and Talent need to be the forefront of producing this work and a lot of what we're getting lately isn't entertaining; it's out there to preach and teach one way of thinking.

But right now if they were doing it, they would probably emphasize on cartoony american politics, politically correct bullshit and they would make everything cute and round and quirky. It would bomb instantly because as i said kids are not stupid and the production company would blame it on lack of interest by the audience

Of all my childhood favourites, Ulssyss 31, has aged well, and is still a bingewatchably entertaining journey, that works well episodically, as well as, as a whole. Even to a cynical, 2020s audience spoilt by CGI and Spiderverses.
