we have been going there since the 60ties--did a lot of kayaking there--people died every time we were there--same thing at kings river--people in our group saved people all the time at both places--even with a life jacket people go into total panic mode when the current pulls on them
I’ve try so hard to get awareness to people from LA ( most victims come from here ) about this place but sadly they don’t listen , mix alcohol with swimming here or just ignore all the warnings, it’s sad it keeps on happening every year!
I used to go to sweat as a kid by the kern river with the some old indians from that river some tubatulabal ( im from the chicos) and the Big pine and Bishop Paiute shoshones and jump in after . Very sacred river and place. Got to remember the lives given. Us Paiutes Always ask the river for permission to be there . Many prayers for the loved ones of this beautiful person.. 😢 the water spirits hold on to you sometimes....from my own experinces. I have almost lost my life in the Bishop creek as a kid .. only took me once to learn to have Respect for the pahya.

You can't legislate common sense. Some people are perfectly able to swim in these areas and others are not. You need to know your limits and keep an eye on your kids

That man don’t know nothing to be saying he’s not scared of that water 😭😭
Living here I honestly can't even be sad anymore, it's known as the "killer kern river" for a reason, idiots will never learn.
Just have a couple of beers and your confidence of handling the current will go way up.
My condolences to the families

Tell people to pick up their trash when they leave!!!!!!
That will work.
Everywhere, this will never stop happening. Very sad. Having a great time with family, friends, and then the inevitable.
335 drownings in 56 years is tragic. That 6 per year on average.
Gosh how terrible to refer to the river as the “Killer Kern River”.
May the lord Jesus Christ comfort their families, so sad.
He did it.
Well your nonsense beliefs don't do squat! Grow up.

The killer river 😅
I swam the upper kern with snorkel and mask. Found I phone, and a body trapped under a ledge and brush.
Seriously? Still no ropes or chains attached on the river's edges? smh...
if you are the average swimmer and have common sense on currents you should be perfectly fine, you cant enforce common sense.
