- Jason Newsted from Metallica talks about Lemmy from Motorhead inspiring him to use a pick while playing bass guitar.
Jason Newsted is an American musician who was the bassist of heavy metal band Metallica from 1986 to 2001. He first performed with thrash metal band Flotsam and Jetsam from 1981 to 1986 before joining Metallica
Lemmy, was an English musician. He was the founder, lead singer, bassist and primary songwriter of the rock band Motörhead, of which he was the only continuous member, and a member of Hawkwind from 1971 to 1975.
"Lemmy made it okay to play with a pick"
Indeed he did, bro
@@redacted5035agree to disagree.
@@redacted5035PAUL
@@redacted5035Lemmy says no to that
So did Chris Squire from Yes
Phil Lynott
He looks 18 and 55 at the same time
lmao ye
dude. I literally fucking laughed out loud at that there Truth.
Dope comment 😂😂
No wife, no kids...
@@saelaird he has a wife
If Lemmy says its ok, then it's ok!!!
Meth is ok, you heard it here
He certainly did attack the instrument.
Excellent musician.
Blackened🔥🔥
And Lars attecked his instrument as well
@@Craysonn I actually broke my E string while playing Shortest Straw. I was attacking it as hard as I could
Jason was a criminally underrated and underutilized bassist. I miss Jason 😔
Totally agree!🎸
If you forget about the existence of Justice I kind of disagree. His bass lines were a pretty big part of the songs on Black, Load and Reload
Jason is the reason why I play bass with a pick.
The best Metallica bassist for me. Dangerously underrated player.
He honestly is, there’s nothing like his tone, he is greatly missed
Cliff rolling his eye rn
Nah, cliff was a great musician that would acknowledge everything Jason did in Metallica. @@PaykoeTsunami93
Jason’s the man. Good dude too.
Jason made it ok for me to play with a pick. He’s the whole reason I ever picked up a bass, and it changed my life. I’d pay good money to be able to tell him but the best way to honour him is to keep being metal AF 🤘🏻🤘🏻 Long live King Jason, long may he play!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
He's not the reason I picked up bass... but he's my inspiration to be a monster behind the bass
Jason newstead is a legend
Jason Newstead attacks the bass...UNDERSTATEMENT
🤘🤘🙏
Jason's bass lines in Metallica are my favorite. The bass lines on ..and justice for all (when you finally get to hear them) are incredible. Also the black album has great bass lines.
He wasn't playing soft jazz in some bohemian nightclub, he was playing thrash metal to stadiums with one of the loudest bands ever. Of course he needed a pick.
Cliff didn’t need a pick. Alex Webster didn’t need a pick. Steve Harris didn’t need a pick. Nothing wrong with using a pick, but it isn’t “needed” to play heavy music.
@@eddierichard1104 fair enough. I'm reminded of Charlie Watts back in the day. He used to hate having to play to large venues because he'd have to try to hit the drums harder like Jon Bonham, but that simply wasn't his style.
But at some time they finally improved the way they do the live audio mixing so he could go back to his usual softer style.
That's what I'm referring to. I'm not referring to proficiency of the player, just that they need the right live mixing.
@@eddierichard1104 Flea doesn't need a pick.
@@Paul-uo1vwFlea Doesn't Play For Metal, They More Funky So They No Need Pick, Just Like Trujillo With ST.
@@Paul-uo1vw he uses a pick in Parallel Universe
Best bassist metallica had EVER
jason is such a legend. he is so humble and respective but a hard rocker. complete legend.
Jason was the backbone live to Metallica..his demonic backing growls and vocals where on another level live..
Lemmy made it okay for Jason to play bass w a pick and Jason made it okay for me to play bass w a pick, the circle of metal🤘🤘⚡️
In reality, it has always been more than ok and it's just another way to play the instrument.
Motorhead had a lot of influence on Metallica. There's plenty of stuff with them talking Motorhead.
Motörhead birthed all thrash and speed metal bands
@@EvanDander They also united the punk and metal movements.
@@bakerboat4572 yes they did. Motörhead and Ramones were the two purest rock and roll bands of my life time. AC/DC with Bon Scott was right in there as well.
One of my all-time favorite bassists, Mr. Newsted.
Lemmy was and is such a legend that he made ok to play the bass with pick. The man could do whatever the hell he wanted
He's a phenomenal bassist!
Right on brother!
This dude has been so gracious.
I love how moving forward we can always feel good about Jason being real and sticking to what he believed in. That’s what metal is really about. Believing in something and not having others opinions affect that
Can we all agree that Cliff was the best in putting so much of himself into the music that it couldn’t be replicated again.
Jason was the biggest fan of Metallica and live he was incredible with the Backing Vocals just gave more depth especially And Justice For All.
Great Jason🤟💪
Love you Jason. Your a BEAST.
Jason was amazing. Never should have kicked him out. His live performances were crazy
Jason the metallica G.O.A.T!
We love jason! We want more jason content
Love Jason newsted
Metallica really loved Motorhead
and now I play with a pick because of Jason.
As a guitarist told me, "There is alway more than one way to do something (on guitar)." That's true!
Jason made it ok for me to play bass with a pick. He was the first bass player I saw playing like that, and since then Jason was and still is my main influence. God bless this man.
Gotta love Jason
Hell yeah, love Jason.
Jason will always b my favorite besides Cliff Burton... His technique is phenomenal!!!🤘🤘🤘
Jason bass is true metal, male, with definition, without compromise, solid, in function of song, without fancy,
he is one of the last metal bass warriors...
God I miss him in Metallica
I love that man. His heart has carried me through every adversity
Wow! Nice!! Thank you🤘🎸
Best bassist for Metallica
That man put some serious energy into a live performance
Jason inspired me to play with a pick and to basically only play Metallica
LOVE you Jasonic!!
He went into a record store back when he was young, went into the import section and they had Motorhead, and that's where he saw that Lemmy used a pick.
It was one of those record stores that actually showed customers whether or not the bass players on their records used picks to play.
Jason is a beast of a player. Thanks for your contribution to music sir
My favorite musician to c play live dude is a beast miss u metallica
Lemmy was more authentic than the word itself.
And what’s crazy is Rob can play all those parts with his fingers, he’s THAT good.
Jason can't replace Lemmy (nobody can), but he is talented enough to join Mikkey and Phil to keep Motorhead playing Rock'n Roll in some kind of Motorhead's second life
I love you Jason.
Lemmy is was and will always be the best 🤘
@@hawaiian8213 you got that right!
Newsted #RULES! DUDE SHOULD GET AN AWARD FOR GUTS AND GUMPTION 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘💯
"It's really about the attack"
* Bass fucking sharts *
Yeah I was wondering 😂
Jason always comes off as that cool ass professor who keeps things professional but can switch to a rock N roll badass when he wants.
He definitely has reserved his space as part of the top tier of metal and rock bass players of all time, just for his energy and passion alone, neither mind his actual skill with the bass.
That's cool, back in the 90s it was Jason that made me lean towards playing with a pick. It was Lemmy that cemented it for me.
Hell ya I learned Bass with a pick. Used to play Metallica and Slayer guitar riffs on Bass because the Bass tab was too boring.
Bass tab too boring?!?! You need to watch a bit more Davie504 for education on BASS!!
I said Metallica and Slayer bass tab is boring.
Love that he brought up the import section as being no more than like 8 inches. They had one kill ‘em all album in our record store and I knew hit the lights from metal massacre and was sure the album was going to be badass.
"Dermis," is my favorite
metal band!
Chris Squire too
I’m trying to work on finger plucking skills, but I love the sharp sound I get with a pick, and there is something satisfying about feeling like you’re attacking the strings with a weapon.
One of the best damn Bassists of our time!
Hell yes🤘🏼 I play my bass with a pick too. Cheers mate
I personally watched my friend do the same damn thing. His fingers looked like fucking red grapes
The best bassist we never heard.
Some of the earliest years of Jason with Metallica were their heaviest times!!
Jason made it fun to go see metallica
Love Newsted
Miss Jason in MetallicA
Jason one of the most influential bass players of his time.
David Elfeson ex Megadeth Bassist he has always played with a pick.......
Well thank god for lemmy. I find myself saying that more and more every year.
Everyone has there own style I love Cliff and Jason and also Robert
I really miss this guy. I wish i got the chance to see him play with Metallica, pick or no.
Lemmy is king!
Respect Jason
Chris Squire played with a pick. He was a heavy influence on Geddy Lee who didn't use a pick.
When using a pick for playing bass guitar, the thicker the better. I initially used 1.0 & 1.5. However either a 2.0 or 3.0 really attacks the strings and holds up well. I like the Dunlops or Acoustic Attack brands. Stiff as a board and reliable.
And Phill Lynott
Got a Ace of Spades bootleg from Cats Records in Evansville, Indiana in the import section...never looked back.
Этот басист круче Трухильо волосатого, да и темы с ним были лучше, чем сейчас
dude.. you still look young 🍻🍺😎
Thanks brother!
Pic bassists are more on time, ask Elefson.
I’m a better bass player than him and I use my fingers…so no
@@マシュードーラン never heard of you.
@@マシュードーラン what?
@@マシュードーラン Says the guy with no proof.
@Budwig van Leethoven yea, we all know what they really use their fingers for.
Jason's pick attack complimented Metallica's guitars the best, so much muscle to there tone
And I play the bass with a pick because of Jason. Jason was and is the shit man. Probably one of the most under appreciated bassist out there.
I only played bass with a pick when I first started but then once my fingers became more calloused I stopped because I kept dropping them. I figured it didn't make it sound any better so the rest is history!
hails from Battle Creek, MI
“Lenny made it ok to play with a pick ! “
Amen he did, put that shit on a T-shirt 💯🤘🏼🤘🏼
Great idea!🤘🤘
When you play heavy you live with blisters in blisters on blisters on blisters as long as you can… then… you have a show you just can’t play with your fingers…
Then you can’t go back because the tone, the hit the attack of the pick suits the music.
What Uncle Al told me in Melbourne many years ago. #ministry
I ended up getting Lemmy's pick on the Everything Louder tour. Blue textured dunlop.
Lemmy Kilmister was the first man to play distortion bass with a pick, and not in the traditional style a bass guitar is played, but that driving rhythm that was so characteristic of Motorhead tracks.
Ive seen him competently play without too. Its always been a choice for him. He goes mach 10 with a pick and I am here fro it.
How does the dude from Royal Blood play??? That's a bass guitar player!!!!
He peeled the 8th layer of the dermis off, maybe the 20th layer as well. I think his fingers also fell off. Man what a tough guy
Flea dumped super glue on his finger wounds and kept playing.. that's metal!
I used to stitch some wounds with superglue back in the day: you just have to put a new drop every two days and it works!
As Joey Demaio of Manowar has pointed out, it's an electric bass GUITAR. Guitars are played with picks, and Manowar are the TRUE Metal Kings!
This is just cool. There's too many "gate keepers" with musicians, and I'd say if you need a pick, then use a pick. If you don't then don't. But neither should talk trash about the other. Jason Newsted is a sick bass player. Listen to his work in Flotsam and Jetsam especially!
Is there a full recording of the bass solo played at the end? I would love to see the full version
If Lemmy does it, it's right. Well said!
Jason one of my favorite bass players up there with Getty Chris squire Johnny whistle glammy Steve Harris it's still pisses me off that Metallica turned down the base on Injustice still one of my favorites I think it's better than black that's what the other three get is crap all the time cuz the people they know rock on brother
Jack Bruce, Macca and Phil Lesh were my biggest influences on bass.
