    I'm not the biggest fan of Rivers but it's really touching that someone like her, who had every reason to express bitterness at everyone who doubted her or cast her aside (as in the case of the Tonight Show), instead used her twilight years to lift up a relatively young comedian with no fanfare at all. That's a class act.

      She's always supportive of talent and actually a sweet, caring person. It's often the people who seem brash, who are the kindest. The people who act cheery and upbeat are usually the sociopaths who stab you in the back. I always trust the grumpy quiet person the most.

      Joan knew all the up and coming talent and gave them her advice. She was always at the theater seeing the latest productions. Also, on Thanksgiving, Joan hosted dinner for 60 in her home. Sixty people who had nowhere to go for the holiday. Mrs. Rosenberg welcomed people into her home for the holiday so that they wouldn't be alone.

    This episode gave me a newfound appreciation for Rivers. My childhood was littered with comedians making fun of her and not taking her seriously. And now I realized it was because she was basically in the same position Conan was in the early days. Pettiness from the OGs.

      I mean she was kinda racist though so the scorn might be understandable. Movies written and directed by Joan Rivers like "Rabbit Test" are riddled with blackface and Asian stereotypes. You could say it was a product of the times but I don't know.

      @XxThatGuyOverTherex1 I know it may read as an excuse, but it really was the time. She was not in a bubble doing that. That type of 'humor' was the norm. Scorn is not justifiable for that when it was part or the culture of the time.

    People often forget how quick Joan was. There was a reason she was in line to take over the most prestigious late night show - as a woman - which was unheard of then. Johnny Carson was very good at what he did, but if you got on his bad side, you were going to suffer. The fact that Joan used whatever opportunity she had to promote others is very telling.
    RIP Joan Rivers. You deserved way better than you got...

    I love Conan riffing on how he crushes competition as his one of his best friends and “assistant” is now next to him and famous because he’s the exact opposite type of person. It made me smile with such glee in the way Sona went along with it not even being sarcastic back but just like, “yeah congrats”.

    No surprise Rivers promoted Billy. Whatever faults she may have had (and who among us doesn't?), she was always LGBTQ+ supportive and she obviously recognized Billy's comic brilliance. Just look how he played right along with Conan's asides, adding to the premise without missing a beat. That's some rare wit right there. I enjoy all his work immensely.

    That's an amazing story I had no idea. Beautiful thing for Joan to have done for her friend. Unfortunately I never really liked Joan near the end of her life before she died because she was always on and I didn't realize she was on and that they were jokes. I thought she was very insincere person not realizing it was comedy, constantly insulting people's fashion sense at awards shows, etc. But I'm glad now to be corrected and see that she was a good human being. I remember seeing her in the '80s and '90s on TV a bit and always seeing parodies of her but never really getting to see her early stuff.

    Billy gave us a handful of talk show host names that invited Joan Rivers during her renaissance years. One name is clearly missing here! Couldn't Conan address this? It would have been a good opportunity. He lately said it himself in the podcast: it takes a man of culture to admit you're wrong! Obviously no one likes to do it but it's the more noble thing to do. And when you do so, most of the time people respond in gratefulness. Well, do yourself this favor Coco and spill those Joan Rivers beans, we'll be grateful.
    edit: lol I humbled myself there, she actually went on late night in the 90s. Sorry pals.

    The main point about Joan Rivers and Johnny Carson which is an important point and well documented and completely ignored here...It's not that she left that upset Johnny, it's that Johnny was her mentor and was hugely supportive of Joan and was the first woman given a late night hosting opportunity by him, and instead of running it by him and letting him know of this great opportunity to basically compete against him, she just left without saying a word.

    • @jumpsuitCD
      @jumpsuitCD 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No one just does that to their mentor. There was something going on in that peer relationship that wasn't public.

    • @Hunter-sm8nd
      @Hunter-sm8nd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This isn't really accurate. Carson was a total recluse and had little relationship with Joan outside of the show. Joan was told that she wasn't even on the short-list to take over after his retirement, so of course she looked elsewhere especially given what Fox was offering. Nonetheless, he was the first call she made and he hung up on her and never spoke to her again. Then Leno, in all his genius, continued the blacklist for some dumb reason. (As did Conan.)
