@firesnowgirl In order to take Fai with him,kurogane needed to sacrifice something that is of equal value to fai's magic. An arm of kurogane was equal to fai's halved magic,i.e,fai minus one of his eyes,so he cut it off as a sacrifice,and took fai with him to nihon country.
@firesnowgirl Kurogane cut his arm off because he had to give up something in order to save Fai, like how people have to pay the dimension witch something for their wish to be granted... I think...

There are actually three ways. Fai, Fay, and Fye. There really is no official one.
