Yeah, something tribal about watching a young person cry like that, you want to step in.
Also are kind of glad they get it.
Quick anecdote, went to see Titanic with my gf and her sister when it came out.
They were quite emotional in certain situations.s
Anyway I heard the sister crying, thing was the ship was not out of the doc. We were barely into the film.
She must have been thinking about what was about to happen!

I recently showed my 17 year old daughter this movie and I didnt think it would hit her hard because she usually does not cry at many things being a military daughter but she reacted just as you did and it broke my heart to see her break down as it broke my heart to see cry on this reaction. You have a beautiful heart and reacted the way your supposed to in a movie. Thank you

@@Aaron-ze1io The Comparison with this scene that Darabont (the director) was going for is that of Pontius Pilate the roman govenor who had to oversee the execution of Christ.
Tom Hanks understood the symbolism and wanted to say "may god have mercy on OUR souls" indicating the state, the Audience AND he himself are all complicit in this crime against god's angel.
Thats why he did not want it spelled out for the viewer and left line as it would have correctly been said "may god have mercy on YOUR soul" and the viewers over time thought "he must mean MY soul"
remember his name is "john Coffee... like the drink only not spelled the same" or for those who did not pick up on it its J.C Jesus Christ.

A lot of reactors don’t seem to grasp the dilemma here: yes, the guards know that John Coffey is innocent, but they have NO WAY OF PROVING IT. They do not have the power to set him free. And if they helped him to escape, he’d almost certainly just be recaptured again within a matter days, if not hours; and they’d have sacrificed their jobs and their freedom all for nothing.

This is what happens when people do not learn their history (and try to erase it cos of its harshness).

They would first have to gain a hearing to be allowed an opportunity to show them; which could be quite a bit more difficult than you might expect. They cannot show anyone anything if they cannot get anyone willing and interested enough to reopen the case, and the chances of that are slim to none.
And then they would have to convince judge and jury that it is real, that they are not pulling off some kind of trick- a less formidable challenge perhaps, but still a consideration.

I read the book. It actually first came out as a series of shortened novellas. And I remember when I watched the film in the theater (twice), I said to myself, "I think this might be the first time the movie is just as good as the book... possibly even more emotional." And like all film adaptations, they had to leave many great moments from the book out... but it truly didn't matter. Everything you wanted and needed was still there in the film.
Side note:: It lost out to American Beauty for Best Picture that year (also up against The Cider House Rules & The Sixth Sense; truly a great year for films), and though I still understand that American Beauty was a masterpiece and deserved the win, in hindsight The Green Mile probably should have won. They just don't make movies like they used to. This movie would have won Best Picture against any film of the last decade.

This movie always reminds me to leave the world a bit of a better place than I found it even when it seems silly or pointless at times to do so.
This movie shows you two sets of evil, you have Wild Bill, who seems more crazy/deranged than meanspirited & to whom it is almost more of a game & you have Percy who gets off on feeling powerful and abusing his position in life, acting out of spite, selfish- & pettiness and judging those beneath him as lesser.

    • @mnomadvfx
      @mnomadvfx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It's less cut and dry than that - they purposefully neglect to tell you what Del and Arlo did to warrant the electric chair sentence so that you can be more sympathetic to them when Percy does what he does.
But that woman at Del's execution saying "Hope he's scared..... Hope he knows the fires are stoked and Satan's imps are waitin" still haunts me to this day.
That pure tone and look of malevolence bites deeper to me than the grief filled anger of the twin girls father at John Coffey's execution - he just wanted it over with, she wanted to skin Del alive.

It's refreshing to see younger generations moved by older films. As to the intricacies of the way executions work, i believe it is a state issue and only an appeals court and perhaps the governor, depending on the state's constitution, can stay the execution. I believe the Supreme Court can also intervene. However, in this case, there was no admissible evidence to justify a stay, so there was nothing they could do to save John.

    Miss Blue,
I agree with Victor here just below. The book is amazing (I bought mine as a single copy, but it can come as six separate books) and the adaptation was amazing. It is a classic movie that will be around for a very, very long time. Your reaction was such a great one and I have seen none better. As an empath I have cried every time I have seen this movie and I have seen it many times, but your tears as Victor said, wrecked me as well. For me not to cry was a first for anything emotional. It came from your tears and your deep and sweet feelings. It was amazing for me to pick up on your emotions instead of my own. Thank you for that. One thing I want to share is Michael Clarke Duncan (John Coffey), Michael Jeter (Del), Dabs Greer (The older Paul), and Eve Connely (Old Paul's woman friend, Elaine) have all passed away.

highly recommend it, it's a masterpiece as well

Great reaction! BTW . . . you realize that Lt. Dan from Forrest Gump was in this movie too, right? He was the lawyer. I read this when Stephen King originally published this in six parts, one short book a month for six months. It was pretty amazing.

Oh, Gods. A difficult movie to watch every time I see it. 😭 I'm glad you chose to watch it, as I wish others (Homies) would do, so many lessons in this story. Stephen King is the master storyteller, as I feel this adaptation is a masterpiece. I wanted to come through the screen and hold you in comfort, I know how you feel. I remember my Mom every time I watch it. Thank you 😊, this was beautiful.
