- Should you buy big or small plants for your landscape design project? Is it worth it to invest in larger perennials, shrubs, or trees when installing a new garden? Will bigger plants fill in faster?
In this video, I talk about how to strategize when selecting the right plant sizes to make the best use of your plant budget. I additionally offer some landscape design tips for reducing a big up-front plant cost, and shopping strategies for finding more affordable plants. Hello Eve! I haven't seen many comments on your videos thus far which I feel is unjust, you are definitely putting out really quality and interesting information! My name is Jason and I'm a musician and programmer in Chicago but I have a strong interest in public space landscape architecture, and landscape design is certainly closely related so I've been getting a lot out of your videos. My parents have a house in the suburbs and their yard isn't large, but I have some ideas to make it very enjoyable and thrilling to the senses while also being a nice place to relax; they usually don't spend time out there so I see it as a challenge to get them to spend more time outdoors. It would be a great first project to cut my teeth on I think. Your videos are giving me some very helpful advice, so thank you, please keep it up!

Public space landscape architecture is an AMAZING field. I'm so glad to hear you are getting value out of my videos.
I love how you framed your goal for your parents' yard: the challenge is to create a space that they will use. That's a video topic I have on the to do list (designing for use, first). Many people in the landscape design/garden design space understandable focus on plants and aesthetics, but even in this niches it's probably most important to start by creating a space that is comfortable and easy to use/an extension of our comfortable indoor spaces! That's no news to you learning public space architecture, I'm sure, but just cool how you're approaching it.

I took a weekend class with the guy who did the landscaping for gardens at the Mediterranean Museim in Marseille and he showed before and after photos of planting with tiny plants (he too pointed out they quickly catch up and sometimes surpass their larger potted conspecifics!). It was astonishing!
I just watched all of your videos; I love how you explain things in simple terms, but still keep it interesting and thorough. I think your knowledge will be really helpful to me as I continue to develop my gardens- I hope you continue to share more!

We bought our house a few years ago and I have loved watching the garden change and grow as I've done a bit here and there. Most of my plants came from friends who had too many perennials. 😁 They were generous with their time as well, helping me transplant things from their garden to mine and it was special time together as they were invested in making our garden as beautiful as theirs.
Very happy I found your channel yesterday, great info & tips! You asked for topic suggestions. I would love to learn more about how to plan a garden that has year round interest. And you spoke of how you like to incorporate lots of shrubs in your designs. Could you point us towards some shrubs that tend to work well? Perhaps some "must haves" per zone?
This is all valuable information. I would say that a larger tree is worth the extra money but will need more initial care as it will need more careful irrigation. Small perennials will often become larger than a larger sourced plant because it doesn’t need so much initial care. Also you could buy three small perennials for about the price of one larger and they will make more impact more quickly; landscapers often do the same thing with small shrubs. I’m new to your channel and think your advice is genuinely honest great advice. Thank you.
Another good way to get the perennials to bulk up more quickly is to give a light feed, either fish blood and bone, osmocote (slow release feed) or chicken manure pellets as long as they remember to water in as feeds well as they can have a drying effect on plants
This is so helpful! My bigger problem, is that sourcing plants is an issue. Can you do a sourcing plants video as though you were a home owner with a simple one bed planting plan? I know of big box stores and a local nursery and facebook marketplace or offer-up, but I have never seen pop-up plant sales and wonder where to source plants, besides on-line. The big issue with on-line is that shipping is so expensive that the plant ends up being very small and the shipping can cost twice the plant.
I love that you don't pretend anything is instant or magically maintenance-free. I hope you're continuing with the channel.
I've been starting with nearly everything tiny. Like shrubs in 4" pots kind of tiny. And I'm growing my perennials from seed whenever it's an option. It's going to take time, but if I'd bought fewer plants at larger sizes, it would still take time. Bonus is that starting from a tiny shrub or tree, I have more opportunity to shape it.
But more importantly, did you knit that sweater? The collar binding looks more like a hand-knit style than a commercial style.

It is special to be able to look at the branch structure of a baby tree and imagine what it will look like in... 10 years? 20 years?

As someone who just bought a house and am planning my first garden, I really appreciate your videos. The yard is a blank slate. Totally blank in fact as the wild boar came through right before I got the keys and turned all the soil upside down. I realized it’s dense clay. I see lots of videos for amending soil for kitchen gardens, but not for ornamental gardens. Would you use the same techniques for landscaping? This might be a good topic for a video!

I always like something big and beautiful but I would like small plants also so there’s always a variety of colors in my garden

The information is given in a very structured and understandable form - just perfect for me as I'm starting out with huge empty landscape. Thank you so much for a great video full of inspiration yes sometimes I buy small and sometimes I buy but it really pens where I’m gonna put it and how much money I have sometimes it’s cost less to buy a big succulent and then I have babies I can cut right away in the long run I’m saving money pens on what I’m doing thank you so much my dear friend
Been loving your videos! What plants do you recommend for the shaded front entrance of the house? I live in zone 9.
Counties and Universities have bare root sales in late fall or late winter, at least in the Northwest. It is cheaper to buy there.
Wait - who is buying perennials in #2 and #3??? #1 is as big as I ever use. Down from that is quart, then plug. I use as many plugs as possible. As long as they're a good choice for the site, planted with care, and watered correctly, they do great even in their first year. Second year, even better. Third year, better than the 1#. That's my idea of economy. :)
