I sang this as a part of a vespers concert my chant ensemble put a few months ago. We altered the lyrics "Nigra sum et hermosa." I am black and beautiful.
Why change the wording? That's just woke rubbish. Open your mind and comprehend WHAT is being said and WHY. This is from the Song of Songs, about the Church and its beloved spouse, Christo Jesu. His spouse is darkened in her skin tone, cause she is out in the fields, all day in the full sun, working to save souls. Grasp the text's meaning and reflect.
@@latinmasschoir5581 I don't feel that there's all to much to reflect on here. "Black but beautiful" implies that black is not typically associated with beauty. It's a bigoted statement. I understand times were different back then, people were less educated and had prejudices because of it. However, the fact that we can still experience the beauty of the music by making minor modifications to reflect today's consciousness gives us the best of both worlds :).
@@Lolwithforrest What an arrogant, biased, and, frankly, idiotic view of the Renaissance! We are barbarians living in the graveyard of a superior and far more Godly civilization.

languages cannot die, just hibernate in libraries and monasteries. Or, in the case of my language, in synagogues and yeshivas.

Splendid stuff.

A masterpiece of musical nuance and power. Palestrina's most beautiful work for the modern ear. An enthralling performance.
Perfection!
