Every single human who had any part in making this scene happen deserves applause. It's gut-wrenching in the most tragic way yet makes you want to watch it over and over.
Everyone's talking about Ewan's voice, but do you hear the other guy? I got chills down to the bone everytime he sang Roxanne in that coarse voice of his.
the same for me. I'm surprised why so many people pay so much attention to Ewans voice here (although I like Ewan a lot here and in general). but this first "Roooooxaaaanne" is totally unforgettable. Ewans voice is incredible in this purely because he isn't a singer but genuinely seems like a real guy with so much emotion who has a damn good voice. It's so raw sounding its just pure magic.
"First, there is desire. Then Passion! Then suspicion. Jealousy, anger, betrayal! Where love is for the highest bidder, there can be NO TRUST! Without trust, there is NO LOVE! Jealousy, yes, jealousy will drive you... MAD!" I have always loved this movie. No other iterations, just this one version.
The choreography is also artistically commendable. With it starting out with just the Argentinian and Nini, but as the song progresses, more men join and take Nini away. Representing how Satine is reluctantly giving her body to her clients. She misses Christian and tries in vain to cope by imagining that she is with Christian. Pining for his nurturing and comfort while she is ravaged by other men. While Christian can only observe helplessly.
Jacek Koman (the actor playing The Argentinian) gets so little credit for this. He absolutely nailed the singing, the choreography. In fact, this scene made this previously just comic relief (the unconcious, making fun of narkoleptics, Argentinian) character have a lot more depth. Very underrated.
This scene was so emotional that it was frustrating. The violin music made it even more deep, the screaming, the struggle, Idk what im trying to say but it’s like a desperate cry for help. It really affected me. The cast and crew worked real hard for this.
Moulin rouge is actually based off a french novel “La dame aux camélias”, written by Alexandre Dumas jr. (The bastard son of the guy who wrote The Three Musketeers). The novel itself is based on a true story, on the relationship between Alexandre Dumas jr. and a courtesan named Marie Duplessis, who died at age 23 of a chest disease. The novel tells the story of Armand Duval, a young man who falls in love with a courtesan, Marguerite. They begin a liaison, with Marguerite being a very famous and sought-after courtesan, and Armand being a young man of modest means. As he can not alone sustain his lover’s lavish expenses, she continues to take clients. It almost drives Armand mad with jealousy, and Marguerite, out of love for him, decides to quit her expensive lifestyle and retire with him to a countryside estate, while he plans to repay her debts with his dead mother’s inheritance. They live peacefully until Armand’s father appears. He writes a letter, asking for Armand to leave Marguerite, but he refuses. Armand’s father then secretly goes to see Marguerite and asks her to leave his son, and explains that if the two of them were to continue their relationship it would ruin Armand, he would be ridiculed and scorned by all, along with their family name and that Armand’s younger sister would never be able to marry the man she loves if her family’s name was tarnished as it would be. Marguerite then leaves Armand, making him believe she has grown bored and had taken a new lover. Mad with jealousy and devoured by grief, he takes a lover himself as a revenge, behaving coldly and cruelly towards her at every social gatherings where they see each other. Armand then asks her to come see him, and they end up falling into bed, after Armand mocks, taunts and finally begs her to come back to him, promising he would love and take care of her, no matter what. It’s a very sweet and passionate night. She leaves in the morning, and when he goes to see her in her home, he is informed that she is with one of his clients. In a fit of despairing agony and hate, he sends her some money with a note saying “here is last night’s fee”. After which she leaves for England. Eventually, he receives a letter from her, where she explains that she has loved him and no other and that she had never betrayed him. It shows her immense devotion and love (one of my favorite lines roughly translated: “Everyday brought a new insult from you, which I received almost as a joy, for it was proof that you loved me still.”) However, the letter also explains that she has an incurable illness, and that she will soon be dead. Armand rushes back as fast as he can, only to find her already dead, and all of her possession already being auctioned off. He finds letters she wrote him as she was slowly dying, where she shows her love for him, her final days, with bailiffs already emptying her house because of her debts and empty halls as no one would visit a dying courtesan. Her last letters were desperate pleas for him to come see her (“Oh! Come, come, Armand, I’m suffering unbearably, I am going to die, my God.”) Armand sits through Marguerite’s belongings’ auction where he meets the narrator who bought a book Armand gave to Marguerite, and that Armand would like to buy back. Which results in Armand telling him the whole story. [Thanks for reading this novel of a comment, I really recommend the book, “la dame aux camélias”:)]
I never knew about this. Much thanks for the novel long comment, I read it through and my heart broke again hahaha... I wish I could get one english translated. Anyway, thank you for the new insight 😢💕
I think we all agree that Ewan McGregor is an excellent singer, but is that a reason to ignore the excellent vocal work of Jacek Koman? Every time he says ROXANNE he gives me a mini-heart attack.
"Where love is for the highest bidder, there can be no trust. Without trust, there is no love!" That's such a good line, why is nobody talking about this?
@@andjelarakic1608 Basically, her job is to give people "love" for money, so he can't trust her to love him. And when he can't trust her, then they can't love eachother.
The purity of Ewan McGregor’s voice in contrast to the almost operatic voice of the Jacek Koman is really special. It embodies lust, love and envy all in one performance. 🥰
I love the noise they make when they stomp, when their feet slide against the floor and when they stand them back up quickly that was a really awesome detail for the song. Showing such anger and passion into it was just perfect
@@dylanfooler There´s a version with just the choreography, the whole thing. Without the voices or the film´s action. Just the fulls dance and song. And it´s some second longest than this video...
The Audio design for the sound effects really enhanced the experience of this song for me. Just that first heel stomp in the opening sends shivers for whats to come.
This film broke all the basic rules of editing, but it worked...that's why it won awards. The attitude and atmosphere of the tango is complimented by the sharp, snappy cuts on action. Like when on the dance floor here where they cut several shots of the woman spinning. It looks almost like she's turning faster than the eye can see. But that must've taken so much time to shoot damn.
When I first watched the movie, I was initially turned off by the crazy editing. It was like nothing I has ever seen, and it was a bit of a mind-trip the first half of the movie. But oh the effect it has works so well with the story and it makes the movie so unique
Rules? Can the norm set by Hollywood really be seen as a ruleset? I think Luhrmann was inspired by French impressionism for this movie, which shows that there are definitely alternatives to Classical Hollywood Style
I never knew he was Polish! Many people here don't even know his name and I was almost 100% positive that the actor who plays the Argentinian was in fact Latino. Thanks!
Tayler Moore for sure, I showed a co-worker this scene and they were like excited to see the movie. I told them that the rest of the movie. while good is kind of a lot of cuts and CGI and there are only a couple other singing scenes on par with this one lol.
Say what you want about the movie as a whole bit this scene is pure passion and emotion and really is what I believe cinema was made for. Like I’ve never felt a scene as much as I’ve felt this. You don’t even need to know the context to just feel this guttural anger, jealousy, passion, it’s insane. This is something I can only dream to ever make.
I absolutely love the shit out of this scene. I do want to highlight something though. I love the vocals and the choreography, Jacek and Ewan sell the pain in their voices so well that they leave you breathless. The duke is downright terrifying and Satine's horror and fear can be practically tasted...but Caroline O’Connor deserves an award for her part. Every time I go through this scene, her little breaths as she is being tugged and pulled by dancers makes me stop breathing and just die.
Yes! Those breaths/sighs add so much in making this scene so powerful. It sounds gritty, desperate, lustful and even a bit sad. Timed so well to the beat of the music too.
For sure. She really makes the passion tangible, like you can almost feel the breathing, the sweat, the shivers, in your own skin. Baz is such a master of sensuality in cinema.
after listening to the original by The Police, the reinvention of the song to fit the dance style is absolutely incredible. This is the best part of the film as it highlights the passion and jealousy he feels x
his love for her, his hate for him, her desire for him, the others control of her and the whole passion for what they do...is both fantastic and painful, to watch and listen to.
not quite.... 'El Tango de Roxanne' is a mixture of 2 different pieces: Tanguera by Mariano Mores - the tango rhythm and the tune Christian sings - and Roxanne by the Police. The Police song Roxanne is an original and has no relation to Tanguera *except* through this movie mash-up
For some reason, the way Ewan sings this makes me feel like he would play as an excellent Phantom. I think it's the music combined with his beautiful voice.
Did you seriously just say that Gerard Butler is the best phantom? Gerard Butler... are we thinking of the same person cause... really? Have you never heard of Ramin Karimloo, Peter Jobek, James Barbour, Michael Crawford, or pretty much any broadway, westend, and every single other phantom to play the role professionally?
Cinematically, the execution of this film was genius. Look at the cuts and camera angles for this scene alone. It's a kaleidoscope of shots that tie together to the music. It's exhaustingly breathtaking.
this scene completely altered my opinion of the movie when i watched moulin rouge for the first time. in the beginning, satine and christian’s relationship is almost comical. it’s all very playful and fun, because that’s all it is: a flirtation. an infatuation. then you see it develop into something stronger, a force of nature that yanks the characters around like a whirlwind against their will (mostly). then this scene happens. everything suddenly starts snowballing. the tangible anxiety of everyone in that room before the song starts is downright suffocating. christian is losing it and he can’t fully put his finger on why because he trusts satine and knows that it’s all an act...but he can’t help it. he knows it’s for his benefit, for EVERYONE’S benefit, but he recognizes that what he and satine has is raw and new and unpredictable but it’s REAL. i get chills when he begins singing softly “his eyes upon your face / his hand upon your hand / his lips caress your skin” and then follows it by belting out in agony, “it’s more than i can stand”. by the end of the song it’s complete and utter chaos. everyone is essentially shouting their lines, competing with one another to be heard but conveying the same emotions, with christian himself continuing to sing even as he leaves the moulin rouge, dejected and frustrated and unable to stay and listen to any more of satine’s and the duke’s meeting. his lines in the song are repetitive but so, so captivating and ewan’s voice sounding almost as if it’s straining to get the words out just add to the whole experience: “why does my heart cry? / feelings i can’t fight / you’re free to leave me, but just don’t deceive me and please / believe me when i say ‘i love you’“ the tone is suddenly very serious, when the rest of the movie just...isn’t. there were serious parts, of course, but nothing as continuously stressful as this scene. the whole of it carries a sense of knowing dread. it’s so powerful. and satine softly following christian’s lines with the reprise to “come what may” as he passes below. the choreography and editing of this scene was just fantastic. i liked the movie okay before this scene, i thought it was silly and fun but i wasn’t a huge fan of musicals...but the moment the tango began, the INSTANT their feet slammed onto the stage i was hooked on moulin rouge. i watch it over and over again just so i can see this 5 minute clip completely change the atmosphere of the rest of the movie. it turned it into a masterpiece for me. don’t even get me STARTED on the ice skating routine from the 2018 olympics. thanks for coming to my tedtalk. tune in next week for this same speech, but perhaps a bit tipsy-er and more emotional (as a direct result of the tipsiness)
This scene never fails to give me chills. The intense passion from all the characters is tangible. It's beautiful and I can't listen to any other version than this.
My mom showed me this movie one day when I was sick. Now, my mom doesn’t have a favorite anything. But when I sat down, she said “I want to show you my favorite movie”. And so, we watched it, and I absolutely fell in love with it, I realized there was an appealing part to just the general atmosphere of it, that linked with something I didn’t even realize about my mom. So now, we’ll burst out randomly into songs from this, and I love how we will watch this together forever and never complain :)
Anime Books13 thank you for sharing this story, I love that! That’s a really special moment you had with your mom, in all its simplicity. Getting to know her not just as your mother, but as a person.

I felt this I love musicals but never knew about this movie and my mom showed it to me and I love it. But I can’t be the only one who thinks that Nini and the Argentinian need to be together
@@fianafarrington6899 i mean i dont think thats it. Oscars tend to like movies that are more mature like that, chicago won best picture and moonlight did as well
I think the Broadway arrangement is just way worse than the film one, to be honest, and the studio recording manages to drain all the emotion of out Aaron Tveit's vocals (which sound incredible in the bootlegs). It's a shame.
I feel like they just watered some of the numbers down for Broadway which is confusing cause you'd think theater would have more artistic freedom than film.
Collaboratively the actors, dancers, musicians, and everyone behind the scenes made this one of THE most incredible scenes in movie history! It has such an emotion impact on the viewer!
Oh my god. I got chills. This song makes me think of Roxanne as a siren and near the end of the song, (4:48)where the chorus comes together, it sounds like the “siren” loses control due to her love/ obsession. The chorus and Ewan is like the sailors the siren drowned because she couldn’t have the thing of her affection.
@@brooklynd7046 The siren's past sins have finally caught up with her. They will not be satisfied until she pays her dues in full, and the payment they seek is her.
love this song! and the diamond necklace was made of real diamonds and platinum and was the most expensive piece of jewelry ever specifically made for a film. The Stefano Canturi necklace was made with 1,308 diamonds, weighing a total of 134 carats and was worth an estimated US $1 million
No joke, THIS is the best scene in the film. The choreography, lighting, music, and on top of that it serves a big part in the story. It is pure perfection.
One of the most powerful scenes in this movie. Always makes me cry. This scene is what made me decide that this is my favorite movie ever. I will never forget the first time I watched this when I was 8 years old. I didn't have much of an understanding as to what was going on, but the music left such a great impression on me. Here I am 11 years later, still singing these songs and crying over how beautifully heart breaking this movie is. Moulin Rouge has honestly changed my life, as cheesy as that sounds. Even after watching it at least 100 times, not even kidding, I can't get sick of it.
Morgan Chamberlain Interesting your experience about this film. I don't know if you watched this film in the movie theater. I did and I have to confess, this scene was terrific! An absolute masterpiece!. When I saw this film, I was deeply in love. I remember I really felt the chorus of this scene "His hands on your hands, his eyes on ya face, his lips caress your skin...is more than I can stand. Why does my heart cryes, feelings I can't fight..." these words touched the bottom of my heart, because that girl didn't appreciate my love for her. I almost cry that night with this scene, but currently I can appreciate other things about this scene, for example the sounds of the violin, the original tango which inspired this song, etc. Unfortunately, I couldn't forget this memory.
I don't even consiocusly remember watching the movie, I probably was very small. But then I stumbled upon this video just a week ago and it brought such a visceral remembrances and feelings; I definitely liked it when I was little and now I'm completely in love with the whole thing. Especially Ewan's part melody makes me trebmle and melt inside.
The part that always sends chills down my spine is when The Duke is standing behind Satine, ripping off Her dress and screams "Feelings....". Up until know we really just saw him as a pipsqueak of a horny little man, but this is when the monster truly appears, and it's earth shattering. Satine standing there totally helpless, doing something that should come totally natural to her as it's her profession. And yet she is completely vulnerable in this moment. Absolutely bone chilling.
Girl Gamer Oh I remember now! Something about how I was a horrible person for claiming rape is something that comes natural to Satine. Which is not at all what I was saying. My point was that her entire profession was built on men undressing her and sleeping with them. And the entire point of going to see the Duke was to sleep with him. In that sense, the juxtaposition of that and then her standing there screaming in fear as he is ripping her clothes off, is very interesting.
the most underrated movie ever, everything is so beautiful and passionate you really feel like you're there too. I've seen this movie 15 times and I still cry.
I remember being dragged to the theater to see this movie, having no idea what it was about. I didn't know it was a musical. I didn't want to see a musical. I kind of laughed at the movie at some parts, thought it was far too fast of a narrative at other parts...but this scene changed my perspective on the entire movie, and musicals in general. It probably wouldn't have done that, if I weren't in the theater. I just remember how loud, intense, and beautiful this song was, and it sucked me into the movie, and musicals, forever. Life-changing song right here.
I remember I went to the opening with my father, and we both walked out the theatre. Never had I walked out of a movie before. Truth is, I didn’t give it a chance. And when I saw it again (on a tiny TV), this scene just blew me away. It felt like true heartache. It resonates with everyone.
Everyone's talking about the singing (which is amazing) but the dancing - wow!! It's beautiful, it's haunting. So many emotions. The choreography in this scene for me is the best bit in the whole movie. You really feel the pain Ewan's character is feeling
this song and this scene is way too epically powerful, i cry EVERY SINGLE TIME i watch and hear it. and MY GOD, the violin in this is just so.... Intense, it fits the whole tragic and insane mood perfectly i love it.
I appreciate that somebodycould feel the same way as I do about this epic scene. In fact is the first time when Christian starts to see the almost impossible happy end of his love for Satine.
freja dart The violíns line which are played when Ewan sings is a faithful transcription of Mariano Mores orchestration of his own composition, penned about '50s. In the original instrumental by Mariano Mores Orchestra, McGregor melody was played by cellos.
Thank you very much. I had just half an hour to be 'the spirit of tango' with this overdub on Craig's arrangement of Roxanne/Tanguera.... not bad for a dodgy English bloke!
Personally I can’t deny that Ewan’s voice did take over the majority of the film he stole the show with his vocal ability. But here I must say in my opinion that I believe the other guy singing Roxanne stole the show. His voice is incredible
The tension from 4:45 onward is so damn thick. You couldn't cut through it with anything. I love this entire song and movie, but that part is just heart pounding and awesome.
You can feel when he gives up containing his feelings, when Its too much to keep it inside, when he says: “Its more than I can stand” And this moment always give me the shivers. I Love this so much.

Argentinian: Does a giant song with choreography to teach Christian about why it's bad to fall in love with a prostitute. Christian: Walks out to continue to pursue a prostitute. Argentinian: Am I a joke to you? Edit: Didn't realize how much my phone messed up the first Argentinian until someone pointed it out to me.
This song has so much passion, it's so strong and adds even more depth to the movie. I absolutely love these scene, with a spice of hatred for the Duke. Applause to this movie.
Oh, the tango. A composition and a dance that is supposed to transcend emotion, One trying to show emotion when he's numb, and one burning inside but trying to seem cold. Beautiful rendition. ❤
This part of the movie always terrified me. It broke my heart every time, for them, for the Argentinian. I panicked when he grabbed her and said "you made me believe that you loved me". The whole time I was panicking. The shouts and screams of the number horrified me. I thought this man would surely destroy her. I can't begin to explain how relieved I was to see her rescued. My heart and soul was so destroyed thinking that she was going to be destroyed like I was
I'm so sorry this happened to you...you're not destroyed "forever"! You're strong to talk about it it's a big step, you're a wonderful person and I promise you it would get better, I'm here if you want to talk ❤
It may have been months since you said this, but i believe you are one of the strongest human beings on this planet. For you to go through that, and yet to be able to talk about it... I admire you, you are strong and i truly hope that you are alright. This might come off as unusual for me to say, but i love you, your courage, your ability to talk about this. I honestly believe you are just so brave and admirable.
@Cian MacGana I hope you get the same action this person got, who was brave enough to get through a scene like this, and then some douche tells you to just get over it.
Everyone brings up Ewan and Jack but why is nobody talking about Caroline O’Connor absolutely nailing her moves like it’s nothing! Like I’m comparing her dancing in this to her and John Bolton during Countess and the Common Man in Anastasia and I can hardly believe that’s the same woman.
One of the most exciting scenes of the movies - the tango moves are absolutely sexy and his song is so full of pain. Satine and the Duke's scenes together while they are altercating break my heart. So full of emotions. Well done, Mr. Luhrmann, well done.
i remember doing this in Performing Arts when i was in college and it was the most INTENSE, passionate thing i have ever done, probably started a whole sexual awakening thing for me but NOTHING will ever beat this as far as musical numbers! it just sends shivers up my spine
@frost ice your entire comment is basically nonsense. Literally what do safety songs have to do with anything? Shark safety?? “Do the opposite of safety” ????
Ok why the fuck did everyone watch this in the range of 8-13 years of age? And the nostalgia grew so much like cancer within, that it actually hurts how underrated it is.
I watched this for my 11th birthday and cried hysterically .. I tell everyone it’s my favorite movie to this day and I plan on going to broadway to see it for my 30th
No, this film is NOT perfect. In some aspects, it's pretty awful. But this scene never fails to take my breath away. The music is amazing, the choreography is brilliant, the singing is flawless, the acting is great, the editing and cinematography nails the different settings and emotions of the scene. Truly a brilliant example of what film can convey to the audience. I could study this scene for hours and hours and still find more at every viewing
I think the key is understanding the difference between Baz Luhrman and Peter Jackson in their viewpoint on film and entertainment. After that you can enjoy both. I love the variety of life offers x
I cannot stop crying when I see this scene. The emotion the screaming the struggling the hurt the songs and their emotions. Every single person in this part of the movie they are true artists. @@squarebear619I’d say passion sort of counts for obsession. A passionate love is an obsession.
I always wished that part was on the soundtrack version of this song :(
Jacek Koman (the actor playing The Argentinian) gets so little credit for this. He absolutely nailed the singing, the choreography. In fact, this scene made this previously just comic relief (the unconcious, making fun of narkoleptics, Argentinian) character have a lot more depth. Very underrated.
Now his voice gives me chills. 👏👏👏
Justin Duck oh ma god you feel me!!!
I'm very happy to be born in the same country as him
Jose Feliciano is doing the singing.
Leinda Peterman No it’s not, lol.
This scene was so emotional that it was frustrating. The violin music made it even more deep, the screaming, the struggle, Idk what im trying to say but it’s like a desperate cry for help. It really affected me. The cast and crew worked real hard for this.
The intro to this song is incredible, the Argentinian's frustration, the high squeal of the violin, the intensity. Its more than most :)
Wonderful scene! The best of the movie
The sleepy Argentinian did an impeccable job too.
No instrument laments like the violin, for me. Shudders.
That’s what happens when u don’t put rosin on ur damn bow. jkjk lmao
Come, come, Armand, I’m suffering unbearably, I am going to die, my God.”)
Armand sits through Marguerite’s belongings’ auction where he meets the narrator who bought a book Armand gave to Marguerite, and that Armand would like to buy back. Which results in Armand telling him the whole story.

Moulin Rouge captured so much more emotion within a 6-minute time frame than what a lot of movies try to capture within 2 hours
Like fuckingTitanic 🤔😀😀yes!
I think we all agree that Ewan McGregor is an excellent singer, but is that a reason to ignore the excellent vocal work of Jacek Koman? Every time he says ROXANNE he gives me a mini-heart attack.
Every time.
that roxanne gives me goosebumps on the back of my head EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
Every time for real
Yes he’s so freakin sexy!!
hhahahahahahahahahahahahaha OMG, hi is great Jacek Koman
"Where love is for the highest bidder, there can be no trust. Without trust, there is no love!" That's such a good line, why is nobody talking about this?
It's on my bio on Instagram for ages. I always love this line.🙌
Ikkkk its my favorite part of the song
Also its “when love is for the highest bidder there can be no trust, without trust there is no love!”
That line has stuck with me ever since I saw this movie and certainly resonated more so with me from a past relationship....
@@andjelarakic1608 Basically, her job is to give people "love" for money, so he can't trust her to love him. And when he can't trust her, then they can't love eachother.
This is actually my favorite part of the movie. The contrast between the rough singing voice and Ewan's soft voice. Great combo.
I love seeing the whole scene, and it upsets me there isn't an audio version with these sounds included because it makes the somg so much more intense
@@dylanfooler
There´s a version with just the choreography, the whole thing. Without the voices or the film´s action. Just the fulls dance and song. And it´s some second longest than this video...
it’s actually apart of tango style
The Audio design for the sound effects really enhanced the experience of this song for me. Just that first heel stomp in the opening sends shivers for whats to come.
Yes! I am looking for that version!!! Can you pls send it to me?
This scene alone was 493 cuts
I have read, just some minutes ago -on a different video- that they make JUST two record. I suppose with a lot of video camera
Rules? Can the norm set by Hollywood really be seen as a ruleset? I think Luhrmann was inspired by French impressionism for this movie, which shows that there are definitely alternatives to Classical Hollywood Style
Yeah the editor of this movie is definitely no longer sane
Jacek Koman deserved more credit in this. Come on the way he sang Roxanne was like a rumble of thunder.
Yassssssssssssss
Yup. The only reason I always come back to this because I suddenly remember him :D
It's what immediately gave me goosebumps the first time I watched this film!
I never knew he was Polish! Many people here don't even know his name and I was almost 100% positive that the actor who plays the Argentinian was in fact Latino. Thanks!
It's quite literally everything
This scene a perfect example to show how movie editing plays an essential role in storytelling
As an example of what not to do?
@@Unguided Nope. You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but in my opinion the editing here is on point.
This has to be one of the best scenes out of this entire movie. So much passion and jealousy. The actors do an amazing job in this scene.

I agree, I truly think it is one of the best scenes in film history.
This type of scene is what makes a movie unforgettable.
This scene definitely sold me on the movie. I wasn't really sure about it until that point. It's just incredible.
Hope you're alive
Yes! Those breaths/sighs add so much in making this scene so powerful. It sounds gritty, desperate, lustful and even a bit sad. Timed so well to the beat of the music too.
You may like this version that shows more of the dance then: th-cam.com/video/Lfal4a9aZto/w-d-xo.html

Its an outstanding cover, and definitely the climax of the movie.
his love for her, his hate for him, her desire for him, the others control of her and the whole passion for what they do...is both fantastic and painful, to watch and listen to.
The original version is Tanguera, or Mariano Mores. Police made an strange version adding some lyrics
not quite.... 'El Tango de Roxanne' is a mixture of 2 different pieces: Tanguera by Mariano Mores - the tango rhythm and the tune Christian sings - and Roxanne by the Police. The Police song Roxanne is an original and has no relation to Tanguera *except* through this movie mash-up
DoGgYDiddy Agreed hands down the best remix and as goofy as this movie is the music is on point. But this song was a whole different teir of amazing
God when Ewan sang "you're free to leave me" at 3:25, you can really feel the emotion behind it.
Ewan's voice is magical.
Never seen any other movie scene that can depict the power and complexity of love. This part of the movie gives me goosebumps every time. Incredible!
For some reason, the way Ewan sings this makes me feel like he would play as an excellent Phantom.
I think it's the music combined with his beautiful voice.
that's a beautiful idea. god damn I want it now. XD
+ParksMoves Most certainly.
Gerald butler is the best phantom! No way Ewan could hit it that high!! 😂
+Broadway_Geek I like you 👌
Cinematically, the execution of this film was genius. Look at the cuts and camera angles for this scene alone. It's a kaleidoscope of shots that tie together to the music. It's exhaustingly breathtaking.
this scene completely altered my opinion of the movie when i watched moulin rouge for the first time. in the beginning, satine and christian’s relationship is almost comical. it’s all very playful and fun, because that’s all it is: a flirtation. an infatuation. then you see it develop into something stronger, a force of nature that yanks the characters around like a whirlwind against their will (mostly).
then this scene happens.
everything suddenly starts snowballing. the tangible anxiety of everyone in that room before the song starts is downright suffocating. christian is losing it and he can’t fully put his finger on why because he trusts satine and knows that it’s all an act...but he can’t help it. he knows it’s for his benefit, for EVERYONE’S benefit, but he recognizes that what he and satine has is raw and new and unpredictable but it’s REAL. i get chills when he begins singing softly “his eyes upon your face / his hand upon your hand / his lips caress your skin” and then follows it by belting out in agony, “it’s more than i can stand”. by the end of the song it’s complete and utter chaos. everyone is essentially shouting their lines, competing with one another to be heard but conveying the same emotions, with christian himself continuing to sing even as he leaves the moulin rouge, dejected and frustrated and unable to stay and listen to any more of satine’s and the duke’s meeting. his lines in the song are repetitive but so, so captivating and ewan’s voice sounding almost as if it’s straining to get the words out just add to the whole experience:
“why does my heart cry? / feelings i can’t fight / you’re free to leave me, but just don’t deceive me and please / believe me when i say ‘i love you’“
the tone is suddenly very serious, when the rest of the movie just...isn’t. there were serious parts, of course, but nothing as continuously stressful as this scene. the whole of it carries a sense of knowing dread. it’s so powerful.
and satine softly following christian’s lines with the reprise to “come what may” as he passes below. the choreography and editing of this scene was just fantastic. i liked the movie okay before this scene, i thought it was silly and fun but i wasn’t a huge fan of musicals...but the moment the tango began, the INSTANT their feet slammed onto the stage i was hooked on moulin rouge. i watch it over and over again just so i can see this 5 minute clip completely change the atmosphere of the rest of the movie. it turned it into a masterpiece for me. don’t even get me STARTED on the ice skating routine from the 2018 olympics.

How Ewan didn’t win the Oscar for this is a crime in humanity.
Probably the fact the film revolves around prostitutes, showgirls, and dying from STDs.

Why Ewan hasn’t been in more musicals puzzles me. Also, so far the Broadway version has yet to capture the film’s intensity of this song.
In "Down with love" Ewan was amazing too, he has a great voice!!
Yeah, practically every other version I've heard of this song just doesn't match the ferocity of this song.
I think its because on a film you can edit it all in a way that broadway sometimes can't hit. But just my opinion
1. Chocolat is so underrated, how many times does he save her!!!
2. The 'passing around' of Nina is wonderfully conceptual

Morgan Chamberlain Same, I watched this movie really young and now it's one of my go to's

Girl Gamer Honestly I don’t remember lol. Clearly, it was something idiotic lol.

Oh, the tango. A composition and a dance that is supposed to transcend emotion, One trying to show emotion when he's numb, and one burning inside but trying to seem cold. Beautiful rendition. ❤
there's probably nothing that speaks better of "jealously mad" than tango.
I agree with this
yes
Well, a true dance of passion.
Now imagine this song and dance as a waltz xD
Yeah Definitely
@cm. CG you're a piece of shit ya know
@cm. CG vou surely is a piece of shit, keep your mean comments to yourself stupid
"without trust there is no love"
*"JEALOUSY!, YES, JEALOUSY, WILL DRIVE YOU MAD!!'*
lol sorry caps
I’m 15 and this is sooo deep bro
This is a joke, don’t worry
The build up to 4:48 is a work of art! It captures a growing sense of dread and heartbreak, I absolutely adore it!
Oh yeah, she is an amazing dancer, and I think she makes the movie.
Wait… That’s Caroline O’Connor?! I saw her in Anastasia!! She nails it with roles that need dancing and passion and lemme just say she has both.
probably because she was jealous and bitter and caused so much grief and revealed all to the duke thats why ???? 🤔
this movie...this song...the 4:45 mark makes me cry. The ending with everyone singing their hearts put..just...perfection
One of the most exciting scenes of the movies - the tango moves are absolutely sexy and his song is so full of pain. Satine and the Duke's scenes together while they are altercating break my heart. So full of emotions. Well done, Mr. Luhrmann, well done.
Watch the movie Chicago
i remember doing this in Performing Arts when i was in college and it was the most INTENSE, passionate thing i have ever done, probably started a whole sexual awakening thing for me but NOTHING will ever beat this as far as musical numbers! it just sends shivers up my spine
@frost ice wha
Omg yes same aha
I was a child when I watched it too, lol maybe that explains a lot
I watched this for my 11th birthday and cried hysterically .. I tell everyone it’s my favorite movie to this day and I plan on going to broadway to see it for my 30th
I can feel Ewan's feelings when he sings and it makes struggle every time I listen to this. I love this movie!!
Malokia Moon I know ! Jesus it's hard not to cry 😪
_MOMO_ these are Christian's feelings. Not Ewan's
+God Of Potatoes I agree. The movie was bad up until this point. This scene is awesome!
+God Of Potatoes This film is like a guilty pleasure for me. I hated it until this scene and loved every scene after.
Yeah, the introduction wasn't good but the rest of the movie was amazing
See, at first it was an okay movie, but then I slowly started to obsess over it and now it's my favorite movie EVER🤗
Unbelievably talented they touch my soul every time. Soon I’m getting ready to watch the musical here in London and I can’t wait to see how it will be in person
Always loved the violin in this..
Ikr
Shaela Duval yeah it's amazing
Thank you :)
Shaela Duval lmao, near the end, it’s like *SCREECH* :> lemme burst yo ear drums.
Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir just brought this back....................love it.
Who cannot love them?! They skated so beautifully to this song!
Thats brought me here too ❤️✨✨
Queen and King who wouldn’t stan
Hate to say it but I think this is the best movie that Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman have ever made!
I coudn't agree more, maybe best film musical ever for me ;-)
Chicago def tops this, but this is second followed by grease 1 and the hairspray remake with travolta
Don't hate to say it, it is by far the best movie Nicole ever made. Ewen has made many outstanding films. But this is by far one of his best.
K Marie Agreed! ❤
+K Marie wha...what about Trainspotting?? He was amazing in that.
This scene gives me chills. There is so much emotion. It's incredible! Well performed! Well done to all those involved! :)
"You're free to live me, but just don't deceive me" Love that line...
leave, maybe?
yeah i like that too. for me this line means more than just say "i love you" it's deeper
I believe it is "You're free to leave me, but just don't deceive me" I feel like that makes more sense
Leave*
Same!
This scene is a masterpiece of editing, and the strings in this song are insane.
My favorite song of the whole movie. I just love it when the singing overlaps each other and it just gives me chills :D
the emotion in ewan’s voice is amazing, i love it so much especially during the his eyes upon your face part, i can’t stop replaying it
The last minute is so stressful
it's you. hello.
Zatyio Nina ...what?
Zatyio Nina im sorry.. do i know u?
the comment on 'i dont want love by the antlers'. mhm.
i've.. never watched "i dont want love" by the antlers lol!.. must be the wrong person!
*"JEALOUSY WILL DRIVE YOU MAAAAD"
"YOU'RE FREE TO LEAVE ME BUT JUST DONT DECEIVE ME"
"YOU MADE ME BELIEVE THAT YOU LOVE ME"*
@@andjelarakic1608 funny story.... I was on the both ends of this story....
I loved her.... She loved/deceived me.... So I became her villian... It's starts at 4:30
Now I am married to her.... Just to... You know .... Justify my 💔
NOW SHE LOVES ME BUT I CAN'T.... IN A WAY I AM THE ONE SUFFERING ✌
This is the most painful and powerful scene than Satine died to me, till now, I still love this movie.
I'll say it's painful because I almost can feel Satine the his pain in this scene, there is no another way but Satine go to the duke, she's in the tower and being a hooker again, pretending she loves the duke for their show’s ending, or you can say their dream. The other side, he have to watch it happens and can't do anything, which one can stand for it?
When he turns his head, Satine must be like heart broken, like in the hell but the least hope is gone.
I'm really emotion right now, its sucks that I can’t say what I want to say because my bad english...
This is a gut-wrenching movie as a whole. I love the movie too, and the music but boy is it a depressing movie.
Ke-rung Suen Ich
Ke-rung Suen I know right ! I cried so much !
Allirah ._ same
She had so many things she wanted to do
I still get chills. Ewan's voice is still one of my top favorites to hear since this movie came out.
Jeremy Renner and Jense Ackles' voices are not that far behind, but David Bowie's will always be the best, as Jareth.
Ooh yeah! Nice to see some Jareth appreciation, here!
Agony from Into the Woods is my favorite. Completely different emotion, but it's great for a fun duet.
Como se llama la película
One of the best scenes in film history, hands down. As an editor, this scene is orgasmic. :D
indeed
Baz Lurhmann is amazing. I'm sorry I probably spelt it wrong haha
It truly is an outstanding scene!!!
the problem its the rest of the film
Really?! I thought that this was really horribly edited.
This scene is so impacting! I nearly cried when it was over! The music, the singing, the tango, and the switching scenes are all powerful and amazing.
My favourite film and favourite SCENE of all time... Baz Luhrman is a complete genius! Moulin Rouge is his masterpiece! His best work ever. He'll probably never be able to top this one, it has become an undying classic!
One of the greatest musicals to end the 20th century. Still deserves the recognition and praise all these years later ♥
I love “Moulin Rouge” no matter what anyone says
Same
Same here! Mom says she hates it and it's not her cup of tea. Oh well! This movie is pure TALENT!
Same!! I don't know why those movie critics and intellectuals bash luhrmann's films so bad. They are beautiful 🤷🏽♀️
This movie and especially this scene are so perfect that i cant stop myself crying everytime when i see it. Totally a masterpiece. I just love it.
Me too, dear. you're not the only one.
Bende asla dayanamıyorum bu sahneye :(
What’s the name of the movie?
@@ambernickerson6747 Moulin Rouge!
Help me Obi wan Kenobi you're my only hope ~ Roxanne probably
lol true
0:56 after he enumerates all the violence of a budding love and stomps down his foot with 'Roxanne!' - you know you are in for a treat
Can I marry their voices
Ikr
+Lauren I was thinking exactly the same... ¿Did you read minds?
Lauren I want to at least marry a person who appreciates their voices tbh
Whether or not you like this movie, you can't deny this scene is a masterpiece.
Anakin
You don't have to wear that cloak tonight
Kill the Jedi younglings
Palpatine made you think that it's right
Anakin
You're gonna make Padme cry
Anakin
You don't have to fall to the dark side
Saint King Oml stahp
Saint King jajjaja i couldn't avoid reading while singing, take your big like Mr.
Saint King you win this comment section..
LOL
Gurl, if you don't stop
Man all those interweaving vocals at 3:14, reminds my of Sondheim and it's always instant goosebumps. This is the greatest number in any musical on film IMO.
