Amazing Live Food for Aquarium Fish | How to set up a Scuds Culture

  • Finding live foods for your fish and culturing them can be difficult at times, but scuds are super simple and enjoyed by lots of fish. The one caution with scuds is that once they are fed to a system they will be there in for live. For some people this isn't a concern but for people keeping shrimp who are trying to breed as many as possible I've heard that scuds can be bad.
    So before you start adding them to your tanks make sure you would be ok with them living in there indefinitely because they come from freshwater and will survive in your aquariums very well, so long as they aren't eaten.
    Additionally, I failed to mention this in the video, but scuds can be found outdoors all around us, or you can buy them from a fellow hobbyist online. A good resource for getting a scud culture would be ‪@goliadfarms7029‬ as they have them on their website and show you how they culture them.

    I cultivate scuds in my father’s fish style set up Ive a roof tile on the sand that fish rarely go under the scuds like the underside surface during the day and travel around eating detritus at night. , seams balanced. .in in Scotland room temp varies up to low seventies f .

    very informative! do you think having the culture in Java moss would be a good idea, giving them more surface area and helping clean the water? as long as they are well fed they shouldn't be eating it

      @TheAquariumLibrary  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The key is as long as they are well feed. I think they would eat the java moss long term but that if the java moss had algae on it they could potentially clean off all the algae without doing too much damage to the plants

    Just came across your channel the other day and I’m really enjoying it. I’m working towards getting some pea puffers and I’d like to get some scuds to raise for food. But where do you find a starter culture that isn’t crazy expensive? I’m in WV and there aren’t many LFS around here

      One place to start would be goliad farms. Alternatively you can also collect them from nature in puddles or ponds like Ive seen other people do. Koi people usually have them in their filters unknowingly.

      @@TheAquariumLibrary I’ve seen them on goliad farms. Their just a little more expensive than I had hoped for. But maybe that’s as good as it gets. Thanks for the reply

      His are much cheaper than buying them scientifically. I’d ask around the fish keepers you know as they may have in their tanks and not even know.

    I have scuds with adult female guppies and have alot of hornwort . The scuds are crazy multyply. I am not sure that the elassamo evergladi would eat the scuds they are so big and i am afraid they would eat the elassamo eggs. I also have the tank packed with hornwort and i know they love the hornwort. How do you know if the gilberti are eating the scuds or not?

      I'd add that the most important thing is lots of food and lots of substrate for them to hide.

    Another really really video, only bad thing I can see about feeding scuds is your fish would hunt and kill all baby shrimp and possibly adults.,I'd never need to buffer my communities water pH of 8 ,TDS 400 , it practically pelts you when you shower...,🤣😂

    • @TheAquariumLibrary

      I haven't had problems with fishing hunting down adult shrimps just because I fed them scuds. I have heard of scuds being bad for shrimp colonies because they will eat the newly emerged shrimplets.

    Do scuds eat plants if the fish in the tank don’t eat them all? I’ve heard this, so was hesitant to try them.

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’ve only had problems with scuds eating plants in tanks that don’t have any fish. My show tank has scuds in it and all my plants are still alive and well, but that is because I have fish small enough that will hunt scuds down across the entire tank to eat them.
      If you want to try feeding them out I’d recommend using a test tank that you move plants, filters, and fish into and see what happens when you put scuds into it. If it fails you just test down the tank and let everything dry out and kill off al the scuds and move the fish back into their previous tanks.

    Is there a good place online to buy scuds? Or to collect them in the wild? Like, where do I get them in the first place?

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know you can get them from other aquarists pretty easily or you can get some from Carolina supply online.

    Where are scuds found in nature friend?

      Pretty much any water source. Good place too look are big ponds. I just found some right next to my house in Maryland last fall. Just get a medium sized next and scoop around close to the bottom in the water.

      I just ordered a bunch online for around 25$ total with shipping. Also aquatic isopods are cool af if you are interested in those as well. They’re the aquatic version of rolly poly’s

      Only if their population is allowed to explode in a tank with not enough fish to control them. Usually they only eat algae and detritus. They're quite beneficial in most fish tanks.

    • @kevinsmith8076
      @kevinsmith8076 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Only if they are very hungry. Give them leaf litter and they’ll be fine. They eat practically anything but prefer decaying plant matter.
