Depending on which airport you are departing from, you might be able to check in as soon as you book your flight. If you don't have any checked luggage you can proceed straight to the gate with a mobile boarding pass.

No they did not and I don't think there was a scale at the gate anyways

That depends on where you are flying from and if they have hours long wait times to get through security.
