From Shack to Summit, Using QCX Mini and New Dipole on SOTA All-Time-New-One

  • After recently finishing a new QCX Mini for 40m and subsequently making a new homebrewed ultra-light dipole for the two Minis I now have (20/40m) using 30 gauge wire plus just getting a new UMPP-1 paddle (made by GM0EUL) in the mail, it all had to be tested in the field. I chose a never-before-activated summit in my area (W7U/IR-012, no name, but dubbed "Rocky Tower") as the maiden voyage for each of these items. This is my 80th ATNO for SOTA.
It's a beautiful area, tough hike with bushwhacking, but a great day for getting out in nature and getting on the radio.

It’s harder than it seems to go to a straight key when you’re accustomed to a paddle and keyer. Nice job on the straight key work. It sounded very close to an electronic keyer. 👍🏻 N7TX

Great quality videos, Mike. I continue to be impressed by the value of the QCX mini series radios. I think it's something special to make QSO's doing SOTA with something you assembled and built yourself, from a kit. Take it from someone that flew an Experimental kit airplane that was built in a garage at home. It's something special.

Brilliant video Mike. Really enjoyed watching the QCX mini been built. I bought my 40m QCX mini already built. It certainly is popular. 73 Chris M0RSF

Well done! That was quite a vertical bush whack and thanks for sharing. I have a 20m QCX mini still in the box. Hope to get it done over the holidays this year. Just built a 20/30/40 dipole for my new/used SW-3B I bought a few months back. Need to get that out after an upcoming trip. Again, well done - AI6OU

I really like my UMPP-1 paddle as well. May be RF getting into the keyer from the paddle cable? Thanks for posting the video. TU es 72

Wonderful video. Did you ever get the keying issue figured out?

Yes, it was the radio, not the key.

Hi Mike! What kind of organizer do you have the radio on on the ground? I like that it folds open and has pockets. Thx! KO4RIP

It's actually a soft jewelry box for travel that was modified.

Congratulations on your QCQ mini build. Dipole looks great - cool concept. You are always hitting the new peaks dude! Nice activation! I just received my UMPP-1 key and will get it tested soon. How do you like it?

Thanks, Charlie! I really like it. This was the first time out and I was focused on the radio and antenna, so I'm going to give it some attention next time, but first impression was VERY positive.

Sounds like the next move might be to find the right body cam or GoPro that suits you 🤔

Beautiful! Probably a newbie question… how are you able to feed the balanced dipole with unbalanced coax without a balun? Clearly you’re making contacts and it’s working. Makes me wonder if I’m straining at gnats here. I also just purchased a qcx mini and am actively learning cw. This is inspiring. Thanks! KO4KJX

The difference is negligible at a few watts but many do use a balun. Good luck on the cw!!

Hi, Mike. Thanks for share. To use self built rig is the most fun, I think. I believe you enjoyed very much. JP1QEC/mot
