    When cycling through the identification cards, one never thinks about all the spy work that went into collecting that data, all the people risking their lives gaining access to classified information. I normally just take it all for granted.

      Actually the identification book is historically inaccurate for a lot of merchants there was no standard and the best they got is periscope photos and approximations of all the dimensions. On the other hand identification for warships was more detailed.

    My uncle was a submariner in WW2, and his first submarine the diesels were so unreliable, that they came into port under sail more often than under power. The sail masts would lay in the deck until needed then would be hoisted into place, and a sail strung between them. You have to remember that most of the desil engines lubricants were developed during the war, and these were later put to use on the diesel trucks after the war. This increased the efficiency of the diesel to what it is today. My uncle Bob, was a torpedoman, and toward the end of the war was a Chief of the boat. Several subs that he transferred off of, upon the next deployment, did not come back. One of his Captain's when the were being depth charged, had a nervous breakdown, and had to be relieved and restrained.

Never managed to playing SH4 although I have it in my collection and it might work well with the voice attack software I purchased recently. Looking forward to the next episode.

    That was so sick, really felt like I was on a submarine engaging in warfare, you made it feel like I was there and I was scared when the S-boat was taking fire, when you dove underwater for that first time after taking fire and sent your crew to battle stations I could really feel the pressure and for a brief moment of a few seconds I really felt like I was in danger in the claustrophobic control station while sitting at my desk. Incredible atmospheric gameplay and wolfpack level narration. subscribed immediately just after episode 1

    Shaping up to be a good series! I first played Silent Service on NES, and later got Silent Hunter 2 packaged with Apache Havoc (awesome) and Flanker 2.5 (too complicated for me to figure out at the time). Silent Hunter 3 was my favorite though. I love the difficulty dynamic of starting with a primitive boat and ill-equipped opponents, and slowly improving your boat while the AI is leaping far ahead in terms of tactics and technology. Never played this one, so it will be interesting to see how that dynamic and the tactics vary over the course of the war.

    I only recently got into SH4, and bought the game on Steam. Found your videos while looking to see what I could find that showed convoy attacks. I have watched first 5 episodes of this series and it is excellent. Your clear narrative of the action in the campaign is enhanced by the history of the naval action and the war in general.
    Perhaps the most amazing is that you manage to put up a good fight with an S-boat! It is obsolete, slow and packs a light punch with only 4 torpedo tubes. But you maneuver the hell out of it and sink ships. I have tried the Asiatic campaign with an s-boat and it was not pretty.

    I'm impressed. Beautiful intro. Lots of very interesting information. A real mine of knowledge about submarines. Halfway through the video, I decided to subscribe to your channel.
    As for interesting facts, you told about the torpedoing of a Norwegian ship by an American S-class submarine.
    I will now talk about the sinking of an S-class submarine by friendly fire from a Norwegian destroyer.
    This is precisely the Polish submarine ORP Jastrząb (P-551), formerly USS S-25 (SS-130) - a single-hull American submarine of the S/S-1 type, specifically S-25, which was transferred to Great Britain as part of war aid under the Lend Lease Act, and by the latter leased to the Polish Navy. The ship was sunk in the Norwegian Sea on May 2, 1942, as a result of a mistake by the commanders of allied surface units during a long-range cover operation for convoy PQ-15. Originally, the British flag was to be raised on the ship, and the Polish flag only outside American territorial waters, but as a result of the efforts of the Polish commander, Romanowski, the authorities agreed to raise the Polish flag immediately. On November 4, 1941, at the New London base, the ship was officially withdrawn from service in the United States Navy and simultaneously handed over to Great Britain as HMS P-551, with the unit immediately leased by the British government to the Polish government in exile. At the same time, at 4:15 p.m., the Polish flag was ceremonially raised in the presence of many representatives of the Polish American community. On November 12, 1941, the ship was baptized in Groton - P-551 was named "Jastrząb". The command was taken over by Capt. Bolesław Romanowski. The new godparents of the ship are Anna Strakacz - daughter of the Consul General of the Republic of Poland in New York, and Admiral Richard S. Edwards. The ship was baptized according to the Anglo-Saxon ceremonial with the words: I name this ship Jastrząb. God Bless Her and All that sail with Her.

    Just finished watching - yeah, the game models moonlight, at least as far as it makes YOU more visible at night. Moonless nights you will find night surface attacks a lot easier. The Ideal is Overcast nights, they are the easiest ;-)

      I would have been more mindful but there wasn't an actual moon out so I thought I was safe! I have successfully duped escorts way closer than that in the past, but hey, you win some you lose some.

    • @jasonthomas9596
      @jasonthomas9596 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Listen I know normally on most ships or anything like that there would be a book that would actually tell you on what date the Moon is up and what's going on is that in the game because if that's something modeled that would be something I like to be able to look at a calendar and say okay yeah the moon's supposed to not be out tonight. It's just one of those things if you're not paying attention to it you get your head cut off.

    Hi Devin - I had no idea you were an SH4 fan too! I love that game still, played the hell out of it, and even got involved with the modding scene on SUBSIM for a few years. Super excited for this series. There are so many fascinating untold stories from the Pacific Submarine theater of operations that I feel do not get the attention they deserve. With your love of history I am sure you will do them justice (eg. the Mark 14 torpedo fiasco, Commander Howard Gilmore's Medal of Honor, the USS Tullibee and USS Tang sinking themselves with their own torpedoes etc etc....). Stoked for this series mate. I have put this in a reply to another comment but will repeat it here too. If you are at all interested in the S Class Submarine operations (Pigboats!) I can also heartily recommend 'Pigboat 39: An American Sub Goes to War'. The story of S39 from the start of the war until her loss in August 1942. Really gives you a feel for how antiquated the sub was (compared to the newer fleetboats), how it was held together by rust and hope, and what the captain and crew went through on her 5 war patrols

    • @DavidKing-ph8or
      @DavidKing-ph8or 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      SPOILERS!
      PS I always loved to start right at the beginning of the war in Manilla with a Pigboat too! You get the feeling you are on the back foot the whole time, the Japanese are advancing and there really doesn't seem to be anything you can do about it. They are like an unstoppable juggernaut. You quickly get rebased to Surabaya, and then only a few months later have to retreat all the way to Australia. It always gave me a feeling for just how desperate the first 6 months of the Pacific war were

    • @devinhorner2358
      @devinhorner2358  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, man, long time fan of the series (though I could never get excited about SH5). I have never known much at all about the S-boats so this was my first deep dive into all that. Very fascinating, and antiquated for sure. Make sure you check out the references on this this one because I found some very specific NAVSEA manuals made for the ships.

    • @DavidKing-ph8or
      @DavidKing-ph8or 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@devinhorner2358 One thing to bear in mind when commanding an S Boat, the hydrophone head is actually on the front deck, rather than beneath the hull, so you won't pick up sound contacts when you are on the surface. In fleetboats (except the early Porpoise Class IIFC) you should get sound contacts whilst on the surface. They mounted the recievers under the hull. Just FYI ;-)

    Whitewater in the bow wave was only part of the problem with being visible at night. In those warm tropical waters there were a lot of organisms, plankton and so on, that were phosphorescent, causing a visible, glowing wake that would pinpoint the boat at night to any ships or aircraft in the area for miles around, and that same glowing wake would, of course, dog torpedoes as well. This phosphorescence was also a problem for PT boats.

    I've had this game for years and never really understood how to use the manual targeting, so i'm hoping to learn something new as I still play this game every so often. Also I've never played with any mods, I tried years ago to get the real fleet boat mod working but never had any success and finally I got it to work, but my boat has no deck gun or AA gun? I can assign crew to them but I can't use them or see them on the boat? Can you give any help with that?

    Thank you for all of the great info you gave about S Boats. I tried to watch this series from another you tuber.....it was awful...he acted like a moron, sank fishing trawlers, attacked ships bow to bow or bow ti stern (consistently as a matter of course). He didnt use the TDC, and plotted courses like a moron.
    Your videos (and Wolfpack345) are very good and instructive. You have earned a thumbs up and a sub.

    Just discovered this series! I've been trying to get into SH4, so I'm looking forward to this!
    What department were you in on Enterprise? I had roommates (and one roommate's twin brother) who were aboard during your time. I spent that time occasionally parking across Pier 12 or 14 from y'all (when we came out of Newport News).
    Also, for the record, the REAL heroes are the EMs who know all the mysterious ways to turn the electricity into roundy-roundy to keep the pointy end going forward and keeping the lights on.

      Some of my best friends were EMs :) I was an M-Div steam plant mechanic (nuke). I worked in 4 Main Machinery Room. I had much more fun my last two years when I went TAD to AIMD and worked in the calibration lab. As an electrician, you might me interested to hear that one of the times WE left Newport News we suffered a loss of all AC power- a casualty we had been told in training we would never see in the modern Navy. Being dead in the water in a giant ship with no lights was a singular experience.

    Hello! I have a question, are you able to hear depth charge splashes when you’re within the submarine? Something I always have trouble with in this game is that your sonar man doesn’t tell you when DC s are in the water.

    • @devinhorner2358
      @devinhorner2358  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I wish they would call that out too. I don't think you hear splashes under water. Maybe if you're closer to the surface, but normally I'm listening for the change in screw speed.

    • @warspitejr
      @warspitejr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@devinhorner2358 that makes sense, I know in TMO they made it so you could hear the splashes to give you a bit more advanced warning. Damn lazy sonarmen!

    LOL, that shot next to the Conning Tower probably made your crew crap their pants. Couple days on patrol, and they have to use their reserved clothes already. I think you cured anybody with constipation on that shift.
    I researched that captains approach were pretty conservative during the early war, playing it safe. I'm assuming couple of your buddies were on the Arizona and your taking this personal 😂.

    Been getting into Uboat a lot (and more recently Cold Waters), it's my first (officially at least) submarine game I've invested time in. The only thing that annoys me about the genre is that it seems almost every sub game on the market focuses on Uboats in the North Atlantic during WW2. Uboats are cool and all but seriously why not something different for a change? Their was an entire theater of operations in the Pacific ocean, you could make a game where you can play as the IJN, US Navy, or Royal Navy with the entire Pacific as your sandbox but nope lets keep pumping out more Uboat's of the 2nd world war. Hell even a 1st world war uboat game would be great. Saying all of this to say I've got SH4 now but am reluctant to play it just yet as it appears to be very intimidating so I'll just stalk youtube.

    • @devinhorner2358
      @devinhorner2358  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have similar feelings. It seems like a large chunk of subsim fans are Uboat fans, which is fine. Nothing wrong with them, but there's so much untapped potential. That's why I like this game so much. Stalking youtube is a great start! Play all the tutorials in "submarine school" in the game, they help explain a lot and let you get a feel for things with no danger. Also keep in mind that this, and probably many, youtube playthroughs are set at high or max difficulty. Try a war patrol or some single missions on easier difficulty and maybe it won't feel so overwhelming :)

      I would love if Italian subs were an option in a game too. Coincidentally Italian subs sneaked across the Gibraltar strait pretty much at will and they had none of the fear that the German submariners had. Would be a new angle even in the Atlantic.

    You know here's a question I've been asking myself. Did they have a form of teletype back in the day I mean back in world war II. Otherwise I can imagine some secretary writing this up you can just hear them typing and then hear the dang whenever you hit the return and it goes back it's just when I see it typing out I wonder do they still do that or is this showing that it's doing something else? I guess that's my question

    So.. I've tried TMO and FotRS:U so far and found TMO's escorts to be impossibly too good at detecting my boat while finding FotRS:U far too easy so far with too many targets to shoot at. How would you say RFB compares given that? I also tried the TMO version of RSRDC but found it really difficult to find any boats in it. Do you happen to have any tips for that?

    • @devinhorner2358
      @devinhorner2358  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like RFB because the mod authors specifically say that they are trying to balance reality with fun. I have found that enemy ships are plentiful sometimes but other times I go for days or weeks without spotting any. Ships seem to follow realistic convoy routes (I have a convoy map that I often look at to decide where to patrol, but I cant remember where i got it. I might be part of RFB but I really don't know). Enemy escorts seem to be well mixed as well. In these early episodes I evaded those escorts pretty easily, but in an episode I just recorded I was hounded for hours by a destroyer and sub chaser. I hope that helps answer your question a little haha! For me, I like the mix of skill and ship appearances, it never feels too much like feast or famine.

    So sorry.... Trim tanks and ballast tanks. Trim meter, yes you got it right but to add on that. The ballast tanks in simple terms controls the depth of submarine. Trim tanks are tied in to the system. Think of a normal level with that air bubble in it. Say we are level but we want to dive the submarine. We need the nose/Bow of the ship to dive down first. So we use the trim water in the trim tanks and fill up the front/ Bow of the ship. In turn sub dive. Opposite 4 surfacing pump water aft and out. Last to add most people do not know this. If a sub turns on its side more then 85 90 degrees it will sink. Think of a drink straw we all did that trick as kids with are finger at the top. Are ballast tanks work the same way there is nothing on the bottom to stop water from filling the tanks.
