    HELP! The Klipsch specification sheet for this speaker is written in Dolby code! For: 1) Frequency Response, 2) Sensitivity, and 3) Crossover Frequency - the answer is “Conforms to Dolby Atmos Specifications”.
    Great, what does this actually mean? Klipsch’s are known for being highly efficient speakers. Do these speakers follow their historic legacy or does this labeling hide a break from their past? I’m glad Klipsch is sponsoring this testing of these speakers so I hope they will get you (and your viewers) the actual specifications! I’m seriously considering these for future front wide, side, and rear surrounds.
    Plus, how does the “switch” change the way the speaker functions? Do these three categories have different answers depending on which mode is switched “on”? Thanks in advance for getting these answers! Keep up the good work!

      Bruce Rider I swear I have the SAME questions you have,I’m trying to decide on these or the SVS prime elevations.i don’t like that klipsch put that switchable crossover in these,And that’s why I’m leaning HEAVILY towards the P.E.’s because there is no Hiding of crossover frequencies in their speakers,they are FULL RANGE height speakers that play down to 55hz which is PERFECT for a height speaker. According to the klipsch manual if you use it in Surround mode you set the crossover to 80hz if you’re using them in Atmos mode you set your crossover to 150hz and that’s WAY too high for atmos,the sweet spot is 100hz or even 90hz if you’re speaker can handle it.i actually think after reading all that I just wrote I think I’m going to go with the primes lol

      Hi Bruce and jbmatthewz, I reached out to Klipsch with your question and just received this email from them on the RP-500SA speakers. Hope this helps!
      "Dolby requires very specific sensitivity, frequency response curve, and cross over frequency in order to pass Atmos certification for an elevation speaker.
      While I can certainly confirm the RP-500SA is true to the Klipsch tradition of high efficiency, incredible dynamic range, and flat frequency response, we felt publishing these specs did the performance of the speaker a disservice - as these are the specs required by Dolby for Atmos use.
      That said, the surround/Atmos switch actually changes the crossover network to adjust the response of the speaker for surround or Atmos elevation use. In Atmos mode, the speaker is voiced at conform to the specifications mentioned above. In surround mode, however, the speaker is able to have a much flatter, broader frequency response - more true to the source material when directly fired into the room."

      I agree. Dolby recommends In-Ceiling as the best method but not everyone can or wants to cut holes in their ceiling so these make a very convenient way for people to add Atmos to their setup. Curious to see how they sound

    I currently have two Klipsch RP-140sa. Used as Front UpFiring Atmos speakers. I experimented a lot with their positioning. I placed them about 18 inches from mid speaker to the back of my 65 Z9D Display. Cutoff at 120Hz. UpFiring 38 inches from mid speaker plate to top of my ceiling. I tried more traditional distance to ceiling top but had dramatic improvement with 38 inches. They sit on adjustable height speaker stands. Today I placed an order for the two Klipsch RP500SA. Can't pass up 75 watt RMS, 300 watt peak

      I like to say I hear essentially no horizontal sounds coming from RP140sa for if there were any the back of my Z9D would block them.

    I have 2 of these on my front wall and am thinking of putting another pair against the back wall...problem is my single chair is against it. Would it be worth it or would all the effect just go "over my head", so to speak? Currently I have a 7.2.2 system with 4 Polk satellites surrounding my seat and my front LRC are Klipsch with Polk 10" and Klipsch 12" subs. I would have to add a separate 2-channel amp in order to use the extra pair of RP500SAs with my X4700 (if I read the instructions correctly). I can't/don't want to do ceiling mounts.

    Thanks for this very informative video Youthman. I am a newbie and pardon my question. On selecting between atmos and surround switch at the back. Does it mean that when I am using it to reflect the sound off my ceiling, I should select atmos but if I am going to place it on my wall for height, I should select surround? In the end, will it yeild the same effect on giving you the feel on the elevation of the sounds? Thanks and more power to you!

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Klipsch advises only to use the Atmos setting when the speakers are being used as upfiring modules. When wall mounted as surrounds or height speakers, you should set them as “surround”

    • @xcSTRIKERxc
      @xcSTRIKERxc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Youthman Thanks. I have the DENON 3700h and was wondering if I will lose the atmos feature by mounting them on the wall with surround setting on. Or it more to do with the receiver to simulate atmos than the speaker itself. This is all new to me so basically set them to surround as they will be on the wall and use the DENON configuration. I want the best atmos experience I can get without ceiling speakers. In your opinion would it better to have them fire up with atmos on or on wall as surround?

    • @_Volt_Ron_
      @_Volt_Ron_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@xcSTRIKERxc I've in the same boat. And I've been wondering about this. When I first got these, I put them atop my front tower speakers to up fire to the ceiling. But I do not have an ideal ceiling. It's level. But not completely flat. With support beams and segmented wood pieces. The ATMOS experience with them like that has been disappointing.
      This weekend I had a buddy help me mount them up high on the wall by the ceiling. I ran my AVR's setup speaker program. Changed the Dolby SP (up firing on top of tower speakers) to being height presence. But left that switch to ATMOS. Then ran the auto calibration tool. They sounded noticeably a lot better than when they were on top of my speakers. We watched Capt Marvel and the sound stage was so much bigger. Then I thought about that switch, and changed it from ATMOS to SURR. Ran the calibration program again. And now that sounds even better! But I need to test out some more shows.
      I'm currently using my Yamaha RX-681 to do this. I got a Denon 6700, but it's in the shop. When I get that back I'll be able to hook up my rear height presence using 2 more RP-500SAs.
      You should try both. Though since your reply is 4 months old. I imagine you already did. From what I found on the internet forums, there are not that many people using ATMOS speakers. But the ones that do, say it's a better experience to have them on high on the wall than on top of the towers. Though, if you have an ideal ceiling (flat and featureless), and the angle lines up so were you sit aligns with the sound bounce then they might work. Though, to paraphrase something I read this weekend, "if you want to hear sound coming from a particular location, then put a speaker there."
      :)

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I received clarification from Klipsch. The only time you set the switch to Atmos is if you have them up firing and counting the sound off of the ceiling. Surrounds or Height Elevation mounted should be set to Surround.

    Switch speakers placement in the speaker box first so that the sound sounds correct, like in the SVS Prime Elevation speakers, that placement both look right and sound better. Bigger speaker elements need more space, not less, smaller speaker elements does not demand that much space, how hard can it get to understand that Klipsch? I like Klipsch, but not that element placement in that speaker box, or any other brand and model that looks the same when it comes to the placement!

      POTE I use the Atmos setting. Trust me!!! I’ve done every setup and experimentation of these speakers. I’ve had them for 4 months now. I will tell you right now. Auto calibration will get these speakers wrong always. I currently have them upfiring as they sound better. However you have to manually set them if you truly want the best sound. I was underwhelmed when I got them out of the box and turned them on. They sounded good but it wasn’t what J expected. I tried angles. Moving them to different locations and nothing really made a difference. You have to manually change the the decibel level within your receivers audio mixer. They work EXACTLY as advertised. They completely come alive and it blew my mind. It’s not a gimmick. I repeat. It’s not a gimmick. However they sound really good too as height. Just keep it in Atmos mode. You should also manually configure them in height as well if your comfortable.

      Jani, most of us realize In-Ceiling is the best setup for Atmos. I have 4 In-Ceiling speakers for my Atmos setup. But the reality is people in Apartments, renting a home, an elderly person that can’t get in the attic or someone that simply doesn’t want to put in the time, in-ceiling really isn’t an option. That’s who these were made for. There are typically trade offs in exchange for convenience.

    Have a pair of these as front heights. Delivery of another pair as rear heights are coming today. Already ran the wires. Was a long run, so used 12 guage. Can't wait. 5.2.2 is immersive but 5.2.4 will really be a difference maker. My room is small, but I do want to have 7.2.4 eventually. For that, ill need an amp, as I have the x4700h.
    2 pb 2000s.
    2 rp6000f

    🤘🏻🤘🏻 I'll worry about external amplification later. These speakers are easy to drive. I've got an aircom T10 that cools the AVR well. I'm loving every minute of this. The svs subs really made the difference. Bouncy house atmos didn't work for me. I have a low popcorn ceiling and..the sound was eaten up by it. They would pretty much bounce off the ceiling and come back down 3-4 feet in front of my mains. Heights are much better. Wonder if I should amp assign them as tops for atmos though. Tops seem to get more data than heights do

    I use 6 wharfedale Diamond 9.0’s mounted to my ceiling. 2 either side but directly above the main seating position, 2 around 4ft ahead of my rear surrounds. And 2 around 4ft ahead of my main left and right fronts. I run mine at 80hz as I do with all my speakers, and get superb in room response. My only gripe is, this battle between Auro technologies and Dolby labs. I had my configuration set to 6 heights, and atmos was GREAT! But to get my Auro 3D running, I had to recalibrate my AVR after changing the configuration to 2 front height, 2 top middle and 2 rear heights, and while auro3d sounded good, it made the atmos sound...well, just rubbish. So I went in favour of atmos, by yet again setting the speaker configuration back to 6height, and running calibration again. This configuration suits DTS-X and Dolby Atmos, but Auro technologies don’t allow for that configuration in their decoding. I chose 2 great sound formats over all 3 but 2 of sounding crap. Abit mean of auto tech if you ask me.

      In case you didn't get an answer by now. Always set it to Atmos. If there's no Atmos, the next best thing depending on the movie is dolby/ DD+ or DTS. Usually your receiver switches to the right encoding automatically but sometimes you'll have to press one of the preset buttons(Movies, music or games) to find the right option for you.

      @@Youthman I was primarily looking at Klipsch or SVS as height speakers for my new Atmos setup. I have older main speakers and surrounds (mains are towers, same series center, and surrounds are bipole). They are all tone matched. The brand isn't really around anymore, so the only Atmos speakers I could find from their brand would be in ceiling (and it's not really possible to go that route in my living room). My living room has fairly high ceilings, so it seemed height speakers were the answer. I chose SVS because of specs: quoted frequency range goes at least as low as my center speaker, and the sensitivity rating is similar as my speakers (you've noted Klipsch tends to be on the high side). I also thought the design might be better for heights: having the tweeters in the smaller bottom portion seems better for direct projection pointing downward (it also has a port in back, which even though there's not much space in back, assume it extends bass and makes it sound a bit bigger then what it would appear to be). Now that I've got everything setup, they do seem pretty well matched. Overall, I really like my system: my room is small enough that one subwoofer is more than enough, my mains are full enough range themselves for stereo music, and 7.1.2 is very immersive (I may upgrade to 7.1.4). My back surrounds are above ear level, and my recliners sit in the center of the living room (having a separate couch at the end for when entertaining guests). The only main experience I have with Klipsch is visiting my Dad: who has a 5.1.2 bookshelf system (with Denon receiver). The tonality seems very well balanced. He has Atmos speakers on top of his bookcases being pointed towards the ceiling. Because of the layout, speaker placement isn't ideal: the Atmos speakers are too high to be reflecting sound all the way to the listener, who's on the other side of the room. His recliners are also almost below the rear surrounds, so the sound from the listening position isn't as immersive. Just an example of how speaker placement and source material can be more important than one brand vs another. IMO, since SVS and Klipsch have their followers, I'm sure they're both good and have their own strengths/weaknesses. I've listed why I thought SVS was better for my setup. But the Klipsch would be a no brainier if you have Klipsch speakers, or are looking for reflecting speakers.

      @@Youthman Thank you for the reply, really appreciate it. I have 4 of the svs Prime elevations mounted high on the side walls where the side wall joins the ceiling and am using them as the dedicated atmos channels but was looking for something to replace my surrounds and rear surrounds due to currently just using some bookshelf speakers hanging on a bracket, which doesn't look very nice and is susceptible to having people walk into the side surrounds due to how far they stick out, so these would fit well there, I just wasn't sure of the performance and was concerned that they may not be up to it thinking they are primarily an atmos speaker.
      I "could" go in ceiling but getting the WAF on that would be a bit of a mission to cut massive holes in the ceiling, so thought the SVS elevations would be a good compromise as they got great reviews when getting comparisons done against in ceiling.

      If you’re mailing them on your wall as surrounds or height speakers, you will put the switch to surround.

    I talked to you couple weeks ago about upgrading my RF-7II to the RF-7III. I upgraded to the RF-7III and also from the RC-64II to the RC-64III. I am very pleased with the RF-7 III's and the upgrade was well worth it. I also have the RP-250S for my surrounds and I am pleased with them also. Now, here is when it gets even more serious. I have the dolby atmos RP-140SA on top of my RF-7 III. I do not have rear firing atmos. I have basically on my rear surrounds a old set of polk audio simple 1" tweeter and a 4.25 woofer. 50/100 watt. simply it has sufficed for 20 yrs. Now since I have got serious about the RF-7III's and the RC-64III and the RP-250S.. I am wondering about upgrading the front RF-7III by adding the RP-500SA on top of the two front main speakers.(to replace the 140SA's?) But would it be venturesome to add 2 RP-500SA's to the rear presence or atmos. MY yahama RX-A3050 is a 9.1 channel. The front and rear presence works as presence speakers when atmos is not being decoded but when atmos is being decoded then the presence speakers become atmos decoded. Is it worth adding the RP-500SA as rear firing atmos in addition to the front 500SA's Or should I just keep my front RP-500SA atmos on the RF-7III's and use the second pair of RP-500SA's as my rear surround to replace the old polk audio rear surround speakers?? ?? Hope I have not confused. simply should I also put 500SA's as rear atmos in addition to the front atmos? Or can I get by with the front 500SA's and just use the 500SA's as rear surrounds?? Or should I use front and rear firing atmos??? Sorry. If you read this several times you'll probably figure it out. You can text me with response to 502-600-1120... I need your opinion.. • @RESURRECT2

    7:00 - atmos... height surround... but what about height atmos? :D
    If I'd like to put them on wall, below the ceiling, so they will work as height channels - should I choose atmos or surround?
    I ask because I think surround is for the use of it as normal surround speakers, just placed on the wall, for 5.1 or 7.1 systems.

      I'm not an expert on the subject, but from what I gathered, it will never be as good as in celling, but even tho it's far from being as good, it seems like people are still considering that it's worth the upgrade if you reall can't put in celling speakers.

    Hey Youthman,
    I have in-ceiling front Atmos speakers but can't install rear Atmos as in-ceiling. Which would you recommend as rear atmos elevation, these or the Klipsch RB-52ii bookshelf speakers bracket mounted and angled down?
    Look fwd to your response and great vids mate!

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a great question. Unfortunately I have never owned the RB 52 but do on the RB 62 II they are fantastic speakers. Any speaker can work as a Dolby Atmos speaker so the RB 52 would work just fine. The RP-500SA would be much simpler to install and is already angled downward so for the convenience, that would definitely be The simplest to implement. I think both would work great for rear Atmos. I would lean more towards the 500 essay since it literally was designed specifically to be used as an Atmos or height speaker. Good luck with your decision

      @@Youthman Thanks for the swift reply, really appreciate it and your advice also. I'll probably go for the rb-52ii's as they are half the price where I am and could be used as stand alone bookshelf speakers down the track if need be. 👍👍👍

    Hi any idea how to mount them to the ceiling?
    Thanks for a video.

    • @_Volt_Ron_
      @_Volt_Ron_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They aren't designed to mount to the ceiling. They have a screw mount in back that allows you to hang it on the wall. I have seen some posts where people took a speaker like this, and even bookcase speaker, and built a special contraption to attach it to the ceiling and aim it down. But I don't know how to do that. They weigh 8lbs. And could be a falling hazard if not done properly.

    Can I sit these in top of a set of RP-160M?

    • @_Volt_Ron_
      @_Volt_Ron_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dimensions for the RP-160M are Dimensions: 16.67” x 8.81” x 12.86”.
      Dimension for the RP-500SA are Dimensions: 7.39” x 6.81” x 11.16”
      I think the first number is height for both. So it looks like the Rp-500SA would are 11.16" deep, while the RP-160M is 12.86 deep. It looks like they could fit on top with a fraction of an inch to an inch. Sincethe 500 has a tad bit smaller foot print than the 160. But I'd double check the specs online.

      Are you referring to me or someone else’s comment?
      Upfiring Atmos will perform best with flat ceilings as angles ceilings will cause the reflected sound to not be redirected to the listening position. A simple law of physics determines that...Angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection (similar to playing pool).

    Youthman!!! Just connected my new Klipsch Rp-500sa with it on my tall height speaker stand. My other stand still has the Rp-140sa upFiring. Wow. Just shooting out the AVR Level calibration range of noise sounds to each upFiring Klipsch showed much Dynamic sound differences between the two. Klipsch Rp-500sa produced much stronger volume ceiling bounce to MLP. The 500sa had more Vibrance, Dynamic Range, Clearity and of cource loudness. Granted this is just DB Level calibration noise. The Rp-500sa are so damn beautiful. Stunningly so. Its Larger than the Rp-140sa. Can't wait to get the other channel 500sa installed on my other tall height speaker stands. Then audition several my best Atmos Reference discs.

Can Traverse even beyond MLP. ie., coins rattling, electrode sparking bolts, giant insect noises, missle and bullets jetting panning across Left to Right __Front to Back of Top Atmos bubble. All aforementioned can hear even if sound volume is low. Wow factor... Lower Frequencies can hit hard on the ceiling. Lots dynamic range. Im talking lower frequency atmos objects. Compared to my RP-140SA's I had to lower my AVR DB settings for them. And still heard many many sounds I not heard before. 500SA are Amazing. Recommend auditioning them. Compare them to anything you have. Playing the very impressive GooseBumps Atmos blue ray disc... when the Invisible Boy jumped on the front hood of moving car then walk hop jump to top ceiling of car... I heard the Top Loud Thumps crawl 5 feet along my ceiling top or atmos bubble towards the MLP thats me. I was floored. My 140SA did not crawl thumps like that."

      Youthman yes you need to set them up with at least a 150hz crossover. 200hz can give a more immersive experience depending on the room and blend with the other speakers.
      I would love to hear how these sound with music and movies in “Dolby Surround” mode. I refer to content which have no native Atmos tracks.
