  • In a few short years, Canadian comics artist Fiona Staples has gained acknowledgement as one of the most distinctive stylists and storytellers in her field. Her work as artist and co-creator of the phenomenally successful comic book series "Saga", written by Brian K. Vaughan, has won multiple awards, high praise, and an enormous following. Staples will discuss her art and process with Nathan Fox (cover artist for FBP and chair of SVA's MFA in Visual Narrative program).

Her drawings are gestural.....she even says she likes making drawings look natural. Most comic book artists don't study traditional drawing, like life drawing, and most of their drawings end up looking mechanical contrived and stiff.

You're so wrong when you say that comic artists dont study traditional drawing. Once you want to be pro you have to take the steps to make your work look good. I think that she does it pretty well especially after seeing her process. She works from reference and it's so delivering to see this from an accomplished artist.

it baffles me, that w/so many amazing works of comic art being released every month the buying public still lionizes and jumps w/both feet on just one or two particular books and that's all we hear about for a while. don't get me wrong saga's great and ms.staples is a fine artist (and it's always nice to see more women artists taken seriously in comics) but it isn't that earth-shattering. this mass trend-jumping is going to do serious damage to many people's abilities to make a living doing what they love and it's a shame to witness the 'hollywood blockbuster' mentality operating in book and comic book publishing now. damn you jk rowling.
