From what I can interpret, Tails in this AU is the protector, and Sonic’s best friend (obviously) so a friend turned genocidal demon (slowly turning into Sonic.EXE) could be turned by Tails donning a robo suit and at the last second, reveal himself and stop this once and for all. Crazy Martin i don't think so, knuckles probably was making sonic or tails fall in pits and other stuff to protect the master emerald because he thought they were about to steal the master emerald when he saw all the chaos emeralds they had, but then in hidden palace knuckles realized that they were not trying to steal the master emerald and that it was Dr. Eggman, and so from there sonic and tails helped knuckles and returned the master emerald to him.
You got point,Knuckles was making them to fall in pits and other stuff,but only because Eggman tricked Knuckles to think and believe that sonic went crazy with the power of chaos emeralds and he is coming for the master emerald
