  • This video is a rip of a bonus feature on the "Sikorsky Fan Tail" DVD, showing test flight footage of the RAH-66 Comanche stealth helicopter and test firing footage of the XM301 20mm gatling gun.

4:15 - 4:28 it sounds so otherworldly compared to most helicopters...something you'd hear out of a spielberg/bay movie

Beside AH-64, Comanche is my favorite heli. Masterpiece of technology!

Tell me that's not awesome. However, if they could modernize some type of XH-51, man oh man how cool that would be. A jet powered helicopter.

That fenestron sounds so cool, and the high-speed pass… damn.
This is absolutely the most incredible helicopter to never be produced. I saw it at Oshkosh as a kid and I think it had already been cancelled - I was just in pure awe and even at 12yo or so I remember asking so many questions, some of which they couldn’t even answer (top secret) like how the turbine exhaust was bled out along the tail boom to reduce IR signature. I remember asking why the tail rotor / fenestron was tilted and they told me it contributed to something like 15% of its total lift.
My absolute dream would be to see one of these flying next to an F-22 at an airshow. Even today it would seem like something from the future, but both were flying 2+ decades ago! 😮

I agree, even though it supposed to be "SILENT AND STEALTHY," there could be 2 versions, the loud and agressive one, and the quiet, stealthy and fast one.

The funny thing is they could of eliminated that high pitch noise by not having the blades Asymmetrical. If you space them like for example G=gap B=blade. GBGBGBGBGB it will make a high pitch noise like that. If you space it like this GGBGGBGGBGGBGGB. 2 gaps 1 blade 2 gaps 1 blade it creates a node it lowers the pitch. They spaced them equally apart gap blade gap blade. All the same distance you really wanna every two blades you put a larger spacing.

I don't think the Raider X leading the FARA program right now (apparently) has a skinnier frontal cross section than this. The Raider X has it's rear prop exposed, but they say it doesn't affect normal flight. Such a shame the Comanche got cancelled. It's defo a pretty heli. Just read that Bell has made progress related to FARA with the Invictus. Much prefer the Invictus over the Raider.
