A combination of sports, yet older than all of them! First invented in Melbourne in 1857, just 20 years after the city was founded. In fact Melbourne Football Club is the oldest professional football club in the world of any of the football codes.

G'day mate. I love that our sport is finally getting out there. So many Americans don't know it even exists and yet it's one of the oldest (official) sports. But I love your reactions and you obviously think about it more than most reactors out there, so great to listen to your thoughts.
I recommend a couple of grand final highlight videos. Pre-Covid though. Not the same without people in the stands.

One thing to keep in my mind is that a lot of the camera shots tend to be close to the play, so it can be hard to grasp the size of the ground and also the way the play at the forward and defensive ends are set up. Sports like Soccer, NFL, Rugby can be viewed in most of the tv frame because of the size of the pitch/field. There have been some very good recent games and I think there are chances to see full games or game highlights on TH-cam.
One thing to keep in mind is that we are in our winter in the southern states and that can sometimes affect the quality of some of the games. Games in Queensland are good at the moment because their weather is more mild at the moment.

    • @markrene6108
      @markrene6108 ปีที่แล้ว

mate, it's a winter sport so it rains often. Which sport is as good in wet & dry weather, l can't think of one, can you? Also in the wet the hits aren't as hard compared to a dry game, therefore less injuries.

the trick to bouncing the ball is to make one of the flat sides near the top hit the ground so it comes straight back at you, and doesn't fully rotate. its generally bounced further in front of you so you can run onto it and the bounce will come back to where you will be

  • @normanmacleod8949
    @normanmacleod8949 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Thanks for your interest in our sport. We think it is very under-rated outside of Australia but interest is growing.
One of the main aspects that is hard to grasp for a lot of people that haven't played Australian Rules Football, which is the game, as opposed to the Australian Football League (AFL), which is the top league in the country, is that it is a 360 degree game. With NFL, Rugby Union, Rugby League they are 180 degree games. The teams set up with all of the opposition in front of them and then the attacking team tries to break the opposition defence. In Aussie Rules each team lines up from one end of the ground to the other, so one team's backline lines up with the opposition Forward line. Yes, once you have possession of the ball you have to break the opposition defence but at any time the play can change direction; forward, sideways, backwards depending on circumstances. If you have the ball in open play you can be tackled from any direction as well, and there is almost always an opponent in any direction you look, it's just how far away they are that changes.
I should add that is only really a concern when someone thinks "I'll give Aussie Rules a crack" after a life of playing one of the other codes.

I had a look on TH-cam, and if you wanna see a grand final i recommend searching up the 2020 grand final full game, (it was a close game with a mighty comeback) there is the 2018 grand final that was remarkably close and is probably also a good watch.
This is completely random but i play in some junior footy leagues and there is nothing I love more than playing in the middle of winter when it’s raining and the ground is muddy and if you fall over your knees are brown.. your jersey is brown and you are soaked and covered in mud.
I’m pretty rough in my games and would come back with scratches and grazes on my back after every game but i love it.
Good luck and have fun discovering our amazing yet wacky sport!

Coach Tube, In Australia it's NOT ONLY (AFL Australian Football League) as our winter game but also there is our (NRL National Rugby League) as our other winter sport as well too of course.
For starters is that Rugby League Football has (13 Thirteen) players per team & their,
    NUMBERING POSITIONS are, (1) Fullback, (2 & 5) Wings, (3 & 4) Centres, (6) 5/8th, (7) Halfback, (9) Hooker, (8 & 10) Front Row Forwards, (11 & 12) 2nd Row Forwards, (13) Lock, of course.
SCORING POINTS, which are a Try, is worth (4 Four) Points & a Conversion after a try is scored is worth (2 Two) Points, A Penalty Goal is worth (2 Two) Points & a Drop Goal (aka) a Field Goal is worth (1 One) Point of course.
There are (NO) Line Outs, Rucks & Mauls, in Rugby League Football at all, & in Rugby League Football players can use a Punt Kick (aka) a Torpedo Kick during play but (NOT) to be used for a Field &/or Drop Goal situation at all but a Drop Kick is only permitted for this situation of course.
Exactly very same as Rugby Union Football is that in Rugby League Football also there are (NO) Forward Passes of the ball to be allowed at all & also that Offsides are (NOT) allowed at all either of course.
There are only (6 Six) Tackles in which a tackled player is after being tackled by the opposing team must play the ball by using his feet to rake the ball to his teammate who behind him waiting for the ball to either to be next ball carrier to run towards the defending team &/or pass the ball backwards to his other team mates and once they either reach the (4th &/or 5th) tackle then the players can kick the ball very deep into the defending team's territory regardless using a Torpedo Kick, Drop Kick &/or a Bomb Kick especially towards the defending team's goal area & besides that Rugby League Football is a more of a slower pace of game which less free flowing of a game of course.
Besides that, Rugby League Football Code started in (1895) in Huddersfield in the North of England that was called Northern Union because it came off from Rugby Union Football Code then later on it changed its name from Northern Union Football to Rugby League Football being from (15) players down to (13) players per team of course.
But however that Rugby Union Football Code who did not like any their players to become professional players by transitioning from Union to League for payments by playing the Rugby League Football Code but although that Rugby Union Football Code would rather keep their Football Code as amateur as possible by (NOT) paying their very own players of money as compensation while they been away from their very own jobs &/or work because of their football injuries that had suffered while playing of course.
But the Rugby League Football Code is manly being played in Great Britain in England & Wales, France, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea then so many years later on it has been spreading into South Africa, Scotland, Ireland, United States America, Canada, & also in a Number of other European Countries of Europe then it is developing into a Number of other new Countries from Asia, Africa, South America, The Pacific Islands, Middle East like Lebanon, for both Men & Women & Boys & Girls of course.

They failed to mention the rule that makes the pace of Aussie Rules so frenetic. If you're tackled with the ball after having prior opportunity to dispose of it, you're penalized, and the other team gets a free kick. There are other aspects to this rule. For example, if you drag the ball into your body while you're on the ground, it doesn't matter whether or not you've had prior opportunity to dispose. The result is an almost manic pace.

er no! The oldest football sport in the world is MARN GROOK. DNA evidence has proven that Australian Aboriginals are the oldest current living civilization in the world and they have been playing Marn Grook for millennia. AFL is derived from MARN GROOK after Tom Willis watched Aboriginals playing it. Maritime history & traditional aboriginal language & rock art in Western Australia has proven that people from Europe had come to Australia centuries beforehand, with some aboriginal words of the north western tribes having words similar to Portuguese/Spanish etc. Facets of Marn Grook/AFL were taken back to UK/Ireland by the early settlers later on.

I would recommend you watch the 2020 Grand Final between Richmond and Geelong, was a close game and full of drama or 2018 Grand Final between West Coast & Collingwood. From memory you can watch it on ESPN+ over in the states. Our season starts on March 16th (game will start around 4am EST) and the game is played all over the world in leagues set up by ex-pat aussies, there is a league in the US (mostly CA) along with Canada and some European & Asian countries. All i can say is enjoy the game, enjoy the crowd reactions and ask as many questions as you like

From the day you started walking in football states of Australia, if you were given a football, you learnt to bounce, kick and mark (catch) the ball. Bouncing comes naturally as a child grows into the game but what this video didn't explain, when running with the ball, you have to bounce within 15 meters, not every 15 meters, you could bounce it 2 times within 15 meters if you want, also while running, you can bend down and touch the ground with the football instead of bouncing, same distance applies, this usually happens when playing in wet, slippery conditions as the ball may not bounce back to you, it may just slide on.

When you say It's a mixture of other sports, it's more likely the other way around. It was codified in 1858. It's the oldest major football code in the world. Nothing whatsoever to do with any other sport. It was originally designed to keep cricket players fit during the off season, hence the size and shape of the field - they were originally cricket grounds.

hey, Coach Tube yes our game has been picked up and is played by countries all over Europe, and you looked a little confused at the scoring. here is the breakdown, the first number after a clubs name is the number of goals kicked and the second number is the number of behinds and the last number is the full score added up.

You need to watch some of the grand finals from the late eighties, like Hawthorn vs Essendon. Especially when Dermott Brereton ran through the ENTIRE Essendon huddle at quarter time. It was an unbelievably crazy, inspirational thing to do, and he did it alone. Aussie rules does not interest me in the slightest anymore, it is too defensive and sanitized, with very little violence and full on punchups, which i used to love in the seventies and eighties. And all the grounds are so well manicured and drained these days, there are never any real, 'mudbath' games, i used to love them too. When an Aussie rules ball gets muddy and wet, it gets quite heavy too, and can effect performance of the thing. And i can remember quite a few muddy games like that, especially when it was the VFL and not the AFL

    Yes and no
Many Aussie kids learn how to bounce an afl ball, and once you learn how to it’s like riding a bike, it’s kind of hard to forget how to bounce the ball
It’s definitely easier to show how it’s done than it is to explain it properly
General aim is to try and bounce it back towards you off the bottom half of the ball near the point,
Too far back and it’ll probably bounce awkwardly forward, too far forward and it’ll likely roll end over end, finding that balance spot to have it return back up at a retrievable angle isn’t too hard once you’ve got the knack of it

th-cam.com/users/AFL you'll only get the highlights though. Aussie Rules was first invented to keep cricketers fit over winter months. Initially played where the MCG stands now, originally there was not limits on ground size or markings. But as it was Melbourne Rules football back then. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Australian_rules_football

AFL is world wide. There's probably a club in your city. Check out the USAFL if you're American and want have a run and a kick!

Nearly every kid I know has been given a footy in their first 12 months.
The most important decision a person makes is what team they will barrack(follow) for, for the rest of their life. I have followed the Collingwood Magpies since I was 5 years old and 51 years later I still have one eye black and one white.
Every company, office, school, retirement home has a footy tipping contest...without fail.
Girls and boys learn to play in primary school.
Watch the womens version of the AFL... they are just as tough as the guys.
Every small town has a footy team, if they can't rustle up 22 locals, they will get ring-ins from other towns to make up numbers.
Before they re did the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) the crowd at the grand final would exceed 110,000. Back then, the 'outer' , the area right next to the ground, was standing room only and people would be jammed in, by putting in seating they dropped the maximum crowd by around 20-25k.

You should be able to see games. What you haven't picked up on is the speed and intensity that the game at for the whole 4 quarters. Some midfielders can run up to a Half Marathon during a game.... we say they have Big Motors... it's not so easy to get a idea of the game watching it on TV unless you know the game....the camera is on the ball but there is action happening at same time 50 or 60 metres ahead of the Ball players moving into positions to recieve the ball....and when your watching it in the Stadium... you can see all that unfolding like a game of chess. But yes watch some games. And may I suggest a video of a Player.... Maurice Rioli...on the Greats I had the pleasure of playing School Football with Maurice...and unfortunately Club Football against him lol... Mr Magic... I hope you enjoy.

There is a league in USA - western states I think - was tech Australian Rules explained - there are 40 countries that play and have a knock out chomp - Australia is not allowed to
Play but have amateur team in - watchbthe women’s AFL - it’s a little slower so you can see all the action
