    When I was younger I sometimes sparred with a friend, he was a lot more into kung fu movies than I was. One time he tried swaying and throwing some drunken fist moves he'd seen from the movies, and I am not going to lie, they were really hard to predict. We were not serious or anything, but I could totally see how the moves could work, specially if mixed up with the regular stuff.

      I mean, sure if you're against someone who doesn't train, then you're probably faster and are throwing unpredictable moves. But against another person who knows how to fight? Yeah you're probably going to get beat up if they're anywhere close to you in skill.

      @@justalurker3489 That's kind of a lot of codified traditional martial arts in a nutshell: They tend to presuppose that you're going up against someone who, if not untrained, is at least not as trained as you are. After all, they weren't developed for combat sports or warfare, they were developed for self-defense and self-mastery, and generally "self-defense" means some malnourished punk who wants to mug you, not a hardened veteran looking for a fight to the death.

      @@UrLeingod But I thought a lot of martial arts were actually developed to fight and defend against invaders or to be used in warfare and stuff. @@ReblazeGaming Most of history is not actually warfare though. Most of history is pretty unremarkable peacetime where the underlying contradictions of society eventually bubble up into wartime.
      In peacetime warrior traditions and martial arts continue to be practiced, but without actual battlefields where the equipment and soldiers of the time are trained to the most extreme extents, techniques tested etc, they will devolve into what can allow the authorities of these arts to survive. Dojos tend to "devolve" into sport and self defense classes because these are the only real expressions of martial arts in peacetime. This is true of Karate and Muay Thai, Taekwondo and Jiu Jutsu. Without warfare requiring martial arts, martial arts become nothing more than a sideshow.
      As such the way we experience martial arts as people born in peacetime will always be greatly divorced from how martial arts in the purest expression of combat can look like. Personally I think that's for the best, even as a martial artist.

    Even if you can't find any examples of "real" Zuiquan, Emanuel Augustus proved the thesis of the style true.
    You can in fact zap away the opponent's energy and will to fight with creative evasion, you can also infuriate the judges and have crowds throw trash at them while booing when they refuse to give you the W in fights you thoroughly dominated.

    In case you can't read the text @ 8:50 and want to read it, here it is:
    Let's be real: at the time of his conception, Bo Rai Cho was nothing more than a lowbrow barf and fart joke. There is nothing irreverent of his depiction of Zuiquan in Deadly Alliance, he's just there to be a fat drunkard who farts and barfs because fat characters in video games in the 2000s weren't allowed to have dignity. I'm aware that he was given a more 'faithful' Drunken Master variation in MKX and he's even got the same "lying on the floor" stance that all other Zuiquan characters have, and you'll have to forgive me for going of about MK animation again, but this is an easter egg anyway. In a rare case for NRS animation, Bo Rai Cho's floor stance demonstrates a bizarre instance in which animation cancelling is actually working against their favor. Most characters who use this stance can transition into it organically by falling over from another move, but since Bo Rai Cho can just cancel into it, it looks like he halts anything he's doing to just lay down for 1/4th of a second before standing back up to continue his attack. I've seen combos with this move and it looks like he's just planking mid-combo. It's imperceptible, and not in the fun Zuiquan way. Even still, no matter how noble they attempt to make Bo Rai Cho, there is nothing dignified about farting and barfing as a fighting style. He will never rise above being a 3rd grader's fart joke.
    It should come as no surprise that I do not like Bo Rai Cho.

    • @ingasparrow
      @ingasparrow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +107

      Bo' Rai Cho comes from the word "borracho" meaning "drunk" in Spanish. Notably, there is a dish in Mexico called Frijoles Borrachos or "drunken beans". Shiner Beer has their own brand and it's pretty good.

      I think that if they wanted him to be more dignified but didn’t want him to lose the functions of the fart and puke they could just replace them with a fire breath move since that is associated with drunken styles and a move where he intentionally spills some liquor for the opponent to slip on. I really like Bo Rai Cho’s concept but it’s such a shame they never did this.

    I feel like Bo Rai Cho could have been a great character, considering how cool he is conceptually, if he fought like a mix of Po from Kung Fu Panda and Despa from Ranking of Kings . A fighter who has the technique to be an unstoppable badass but his body can’t keep up so he instead melds his knowledge with his weight to take advantage of it with some unorthodox attacks but MK just made him the funny fart and puke man. What’s strange is that those moves could be changed to remove the grossness and still work the same such as breathing a burst of fire to replace the fart and a move where he spills a puddle of his drink to replace the puke. Such Wasted Potential

      Maybe thats why he stands out more, I guess if one is not a fan of a charcater that imcorporates burfs and farts in a fight but for Bo Rai Cho he stands out from the norm. Everyone else style of drunken kung fu is sorta the same the way you see them, pretty much to catch the opponent off guard by their crazy movements and offence. However some differentiate like Chin Gentsai who somewhat fights with a weapon which is a Sake bottle. And in the case of Bo Rai Cho he imcorporates that by his weight and domeanour.
      Also the fact some of these characters fighting style and looks are somewhat based on Jackie Chan /Freddy Wong it surprises me when noticing Bo Rai Cho might be imspired by Sammo Hung who also is fat and a great martial artist(& probably Jackie's friends).
      He maybe disgusting but I still like him. Plus in a game full of blood and gore, burps and farts are nothing.

    it's still so weird to me that NRS had the legitimate chance to redeem Bo-Rai-Cho in MKX by making him less of a joke and implementing that drunken master charm of "whimsical but respectable martial arts master" and then they just... kinda just had to have their cake and eat it too.
    Like, story-wise and lore-wise, Bo-Rai-Cho is exactly that, a respected martial arts master who bums around as a drunkard. You can see it in his MKX interactions. Standard stuff for the archetype, but NRS just, like, had to keep the farts and puke as if they were an integral aspect of the character and not part of why people hated him in the first place and continue to resent his existence. It's one of those baffling fumbles that doesn't really surprise me from the writers at NRS, but it's still disappointing nonetheless.

    Something interesting about Drunken Fist in fiction that I think is worth mentioning:
    As far as I'm aware, Drunken Fist doesn't *lose* when it's employed... and I think that's part of the trope of the "unbeatable joke character". (Naturally, I can't be certain here, I may have only seen about 10% of it's fictional depictions if we're being generous). I think part of it is because "lovable antics" and "tension" don't mix very well: If our hero is being a goofball in a fight or just having too much fun then it's super entertaining to watch, but there is almost never any tension in the scene. The goofball character is always in control of the fight, and if that character isn't dominant in the fight then it's just not fun anymore. These characters will win every fight you put them in, but will never fight any fight that matters.
    (This isn't limited to drunken fist, by the way. Zangief is a perfect example in SF5's story: He's just having a grand old time and really doesn't seem to break a sweat in any of his fights, even against capable world warriors like Balrog... but that's because if we were to put Gief up against M.Bison and have Gief lose... well then watching Zangief after that point wouldn't be as much fun.)

      A very good observation! The mood of scenes with Drunken Boxing characters rarely lends itself to them losing. I do recall, though, that Rock Lee did lose in Naruto when he first employed Drunken Fist (or at the very least was on the verge of losing before being rescued), and his fight was against one of the more important foes in the series at that time. However, his opponent beat him by finding ways to make him sober up, as it was discovered that he could only use the style while actually drunk. In that way, the only method that an enemy was able to use to defeat a Drunken Fist practitioner was to *remove* Drunken Fist as an option in the fight.
      In other words, the style itself was still unbeatable!

    • @Macrochenia
      @Macrochenia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think part of the reason it never loses in fiction is because it's pretty much universally a heroic martial art. You just never see antagonistic characters who are practitioners of the style.

    It also makes me realize Bo Rai'Cho from Mortal Kombat is now bad for one more reason because he actually is just a smelly drunkard.

    • @Impalingthorn
      @Impalingthorn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@umairashraf5167 I honestly couldn't say.
      I mostly judge arts for the philosophies and habits they condition people into.
      Like, Capoiera just as an example. Cap' has a ton of useful qualities about it; trains flexibility, cardio, endurance, translates into pretty much every other kicking art out there... But you'll also have a lot of people that will go into MMA and real fights that might just start dancing without consideration and forget someone simply rushing in for grappling, something most untrained fighters will do by instinct, can compromise not only their kicks but can quickly make things go south if this happens on concrete and you happen to immediately pull something. Even worse in scenarios like, say, knife fights. I bring that up because that's what I have the most experience with and simply acknowledging the potential presence of a knife in a real street fight is an important thing to consider that most people don't.
      Drunken Fist? It's an art I don't have much hands on experience with, but if we're talking "bait and switch" martial arts where you deceive and/or goad opponents into doing what you want, I COULD see it having some practicality.

    1:45 The Eight Drunken Immortals as defined by the Drunken Master films:
    Lu Dongbin = the drunkard w/ inner strength [Jackie also plays him in The Forbidden Kingdom under the character's birth name]
    Zhang (Chan) Gualao = the drunkard w/ the swift double-kicks
    Lan Caihe = the drunkard w/ the sudden deadly waist attack
    He (Ho) Xiangu = the drunken woman flaunting her body
    Li Tieguai = the drunken cripple w/ the powerful right leg
    Han Xiangzi = the drunken flute player w/ the powerful wrists
    Cao (Tso) Guojiu = the drunkard w/ the powerful throat lock
    Zhongli (Jun) Quan = the drunkard holding a pot in his arms
    The cool thing is many of these references are included in the games, particularly in Brad Wong's moveset. Also, I love that this video ends w/ a preview of capoeira since that's another deceptive style that's so entertaining to watch, especially when matched up against drunken fist.

    I'm not sure I've ever really found much proof that the full-on Jackie Chan / Lei Wulong exaggerated drunk swaying type of Drunken Boxing is particularly efficient in tournaments, but the concept behind it sure is. The idea of this bizarre flexibility and striking from completely unexpected angles that just shouldn't work and don't follow the rules of the particular martial art absolutely works. Look at "Prince" Naseem Hamed in professional boxing, who doesn't stand in that traditional Drunken Master stance and doesn't flop around everywhere, but he does kinda just bend his body in bizarre positions that look like he's completely off-balance with zero defence, only for him to continually slip punches in these absurd positions and suddenly throw killer punches without looking like he's able to put any power in to them. That idea of intentionally breaking your own discipline's rules and standards to constantly have the element of surprise is absolutely an efficient style in actual competitive fights if mastered.

      Prince Naseem Hamed used to fight a lot more tight in the early stages of his career. A lot of his best work was done off the corkscrew uppercut or while shifting forward, power hitting from both stances. The two times he is truly off-balance is when he bends at the waist to duck a hook or when he pulls back but forgets to take a back-step with it.
      The positions aren't that absurd, it just looks that way because he commits a tremendous deal of weight to each stance to make the change of head positioning that much more dramatic. Which, in turn, loads up insanely strong punches from having the opportunity to do so by sending his opponent off-balance with his distance management.
      It's also because his career was mostly built up on crushing cans and proving to be vulnerable even at some earlier tests in his career against opponents he should have won against easily on paper with his perceived skill set. People say that his style is awkward because he chooses to break the rules like a boxing Picasso; however, I think it's more because he wasn't really that technically sound in the first place and used many attributes of his as crutches to double down on his strengths.

      @@KoreanRamborecisely. Emmanual Augustus would be a better example as he was literally dancing. Subtly shifting his weight to compensate for how often he loaded up, starting with what would usually be on the end of a combo then ending with lighter punches to allow movement for the next “shimmy” or whatever.
      Both fighters were ultimately defeated by technique because theres no real way to get “better” at these unique ways. Like you start the New Game at you’re ceiling and blow through the beginning, but eventually the rest will rise to a higher skill cap.

    Speaking of Tabletop RPGs, Pathfinder 2e also has the monk, a pretty straightfoward class with the whole idea of martial arts: using inner knowledge and the mix between strength and speed to get the upper hand, and the fight styles are represented by the different stances you can take. Most are either focused on Strength, Dexterity or Wisdom, but the Stumbling Stance differs from it. It is a stance that favors Charisma and Dexterity, Dex to hit the attacks and Charisma to fool your opponents with a well-placed Deception check. When you enter the stance, you gain bonuses to feints and your fists gain the Backstabber trait, dealing more damage against foes who are caught offguard by your bubbling movement, and if you get hit by an enemy, you move yourself in such a way that you are able to make your next attack more precise. You can even feint before doing your Flurry of Blows and beat someone even more!
    Also, fuck Bo Rai Cho. All my Drunken homies hate Bo Rai Cho.

    part of the mysticism of Drunken Fist is the idea of being Drunk keeps you "Loose". *SUPPOSEDLY* ; what i mean by that is that most inexperienced martial artists tense up too much while preparing to fight, while (most) experienced fighters are loose and almost looking relaxed even while prepared. alcohol (supposedly) relaxes the fighter to a degree that helps it helps them achieve that state of limberness, along with the other benefits such as being totally smoshed and unpredictable, and able to take ungodly amounts of punishment, perhaps, again, because they're so relaxed on impact, and maybe also because alcohol dulls some of the pain.
    EDIT: Forgot to add that it being drunk also emphasizes impulse against overthinking (thus leading to some the first decision on action, rather than going through the entire process of "want to hit his face, punch with left hand"), and thus putting the muscle memory of the martial artist into full showing, even when drunk.
    The worst thing most chinese martial artists can do is to tense up too much - while rigid, most chinese martial arts are still considered "soft" and require good flexibility to achieve. simply put, some alcohol might be a good factor, too much is gonna be not great.

He’s shared some of the myths and stories that he was taught as a kid. Jamie as a Zui Quan user is undeniably the most original rendition of Zui Quan in fighting games and part of reason is how he combines this fighting style with break-dancing. At first this combination seems odd, a Chinese martial art and an urban performance art, but what unifies the two styles is how they both value unpredictability. The former values it for the sake of tactical advantage, juking opponents with unreadable movements. The latter values it for the sake of originality, showing the audience your creativity and personal style.
    The way this translates to Jamie's gameplay is the drink level system: each level give Jamie a new target combo and special move. You cannot rely on a rote set of moves to play Jamie effectively, you have to go out of your comfort zone and use the new stuff as you unlock it mid-match. The opponent too has to pay attention to Jamie's drink level, or else they'll get blindsided by a move they didn't see coming. It's very easy to forget that Jamie gets a command grab at level 3 because reaching lv 3 tends to happen near the latter half of a match.

    You're done with MK, I get that. But somehow it manages to keep slipping into these videos here and there
    the Bajiquan video showed an aspect of 3D MK in general I think is kinda silly. Characters have listed fighting styles, but almost never look at all like the art in question. The style names are legit, but onky Tae Kwon Do looks at all like that, for 3D MK Standards.
    Hell, for Armageddon a lotnof fighting styles were stripped away and given to someone else. Meaning the arts really meant nothing to who that charafter was outsife of the function. And Li Mei didn't even keep Baji, she kept Lui He Ba Fa.
    And sometimes it made no sense, like Kali Sticks. When even Sonya kills people, bringing a weapon designed to be a Sword training implement to a fight to the death just doesn't make sense
    They only started to have characters who looked like they used X martial art (not counting Liu Kang) in MK11, and even then ABI counted that as the last straw

    You've opened my eyes to a what I think is a *brilliant* mechanic with Brad Wong's walk. The idea that a character's walk cycle is uneven with bursts of forward movement followed by slowdown, or the other way around is... super interesting to think about and gives the character a sort of "passive footwork" that I think has a lot of potential. Sadly, I don't have any Dead or Alive games to try him with, but it's got me thinking of all kinds of mechanics you could use to mess around with it. If this hypothetical character starts slow and has a quick forward move, maybe some moves change his position in the walk for a few frames after you land them, making the first steps you take after using this move be the sudden quick move before slowing down again, and also makes me wonder about what potential we can dig out of non-standard walk cycles for other characters.

      I didn't get a chance to showcase it, but Tekken 7's version of Lei Wulong also added movement options to his Drunken Boxing stance. He can do a steady shuffle moving backwards, but his forward walk is a disorienting stumble that starts slow, then suddenly lurches forward swiftly while actually swaying into and out of the foreground/background. It's VERY difficult to keep an eye on him before he suddenly launches an attack out of it, and it looks VERY cool when he does it! A few of those Lei clips actually have it.

      @@SugarPunch ya know, now that I think of it, the only other non standard walk cycle I can think of is Parasoul of Skullgirls. Though in this case, it's meant to demonstrate poise and precision, not a lack of control (real or feigned).
      Her inching forward with calm, controlled steps however still demonstrates character incredibly well.

    While I do always enjoy watching the drunken boxing characters, I've never bought its viability as an actual fighting style. It's not that easy to hurt someone with a punch, even as a trained martial artist, and drunken boxing just seems to spend too much effort on weird evasive stances to ever do any real damage.

      @@Stroggoii Augustus wasn't literally using a drunken fist kung fu style, he was just an insanely unorthodox boxer who was nicknamed "The Drunken Master", probably in reference to the Jackie Chan movie. Look at all the examples of the Kung Fu styles then compare it to Augustus, they don't look anything alike.
      And Willie Pep was a defensive genius, but once again look at the tape we have on him and it doesn't look anything like those styles of Kung Fu, also given the time period he lived in it's less likely he would've even been exposed to the concept, let alone be trained in it.

    One question I have is about drunkards who fight but not necessarily practitioners of Zui Quan. I've seen some depictions of these kinds of characters taking a sip of their beverages and then spitting it into their swords. Does this have any tactical advantage or historical precedence? The best examples I have are Haomaru, from SamSho, and Juzou the Drunkard from Sekiro

    • @KingSigy
      @KingSigy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It has to do with the style of the sword. Some swords have a bamboo grip and soaking it makes it easier to hold. There is no significance to it being alcohol as water works just as well, but most depictions in media don't have a badass samurai carrying around a cask of water, haha.

    For the capoeira episode, be sure to include Trident from Eternal Champions. He's a strange one, because he's from ancient Atlantis, probably around 2000 years before the style was invented, so how did he learn it...?
